3222D- Certificate in Vocational<br />
Studies (Trainees hips)<br />
This course is <strong>of</strong>fered at both the Hawthorn and Prahran<br />
campuses.<br />
Course aims<br />
The Certificate in Vocational Studies was originally<br />
developed as an <strong>of</strong>f-the-job training component for the<br />
Victorian Government's Work/Study Program. It has since<br />
been adopted by TAFE institutions as the <strong>of</strong>f-the-job<br />
training component for the Australian Traineeship System.<br />
The Certificate in Vocational Studies is the formal award<br />
associated with the completion <strong>of</strong> a traineeship. <strong>Swinburne</strong><br />
<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Technology</strong> <strong>of</strong>fers the Certificate <strong>of</strong><br />
Vocational Studies in a number <strong>of</strong> areas including real<br />
estate, insurance, credit control, <strong>of</strong>fice technology, <strong>of</strong>fice,<br />
finance and building societies. All these courses have been<br />
accredited by the State Training Board <strong>of</strong> Victoria and<br />
endorsed by the Industrial Training Commission <strong>of</strong> Victoria.<br />
Career potential<br />
Completion <strong>of</strong> the subjects listed below and the on-the-job<br />
training entitles trainees to a Certificate in Vocational<br />
Studies, a statement <strong>of</strong> results, and a Traineeship Certificate<br />
<strong>of</strong> Competency issued by the State Training Board <strong>of</strong><br />
Victoria.<br />
The Certificate in Vocational Studies is well recognised by<br />
public and private sector employers. In a number <strong>of</strong><br />
industries the Certificate in Vocational Studies is recognised as<br />
part <strong>of</strong> industrial awards and as a qualification suitable for<br />
initial employment.<br />
Further studies<br />
Students who have successfully completed a Certificate<br />
<strong>of</strong> Vocational Studies will be eligible to apply for a wide<br />
range <strong>of</strong> Associate Diploma courses. Intending applicants<br />
should contact their local TAFE institution.<br />
Course availability and duration<br />
The Certificate in Vocational Studies can be completed<br />
in one academic year by attendance at a TAFE institution<br />
for two days per week or on block release. Student intakes<br />
can occur at various times during the year, and trainees<br />
complete their twelve months <strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong>f-the-job training from<br />
the date <strong>of</strong> their enrolment.<br />
The training plan combines thirty-nine weeks <strong>of</strong> work<br />
place (on-the-job) and thirteen weeks TAFE (<strong>of</strong>f-the-job)<br />
training. The thirteen weeks <strong>of</strong>f-the-job training is spread<br />
across the traineeship year and may be undertaken as block<br />
release or day release from the employer.<br />

<strong>Technology</strong>: Computer<br />
Applications<br />
Course aims<br />
This course is designed to train end-users <strong>of</strong> computers and<br />
information technology systems to be skilled in their<br />
application and use. It is not designed to train computer<br />
pr<strong>of</strong>essionals such as computer programmers or systems<br />
analysts. Within this context, the course aims to provide<br />
participants with the opportunity to develop:<br />
the skills to use computers efficiently in their<br />
workplace;<br />
an understanding <strong>of</strong> a wide range <strong>of</strong> computer concepts<br />
and a knowledge <strong>of</strong> business information requirements<br />
so that they will be able to identify ways <strong>of</strong> improving<br />
their own ~roductivity . . for others, by applying<br />
computer technology.<br />
Course duration<br />
The course consists <strong>of</strong> ten modules. Each module requires<br />
twenty hours <strong>of</strong> class attendance.<br />
The course will be <strong>of</strong>fered both full-time (Prahran campus<br />
only) and part-time (evening at Hawthorn and Prahran<br />
campuses and Saturday at Hawthorn campus only).<br />
The minimum completion time is six months for full-time<br />
students and one year for part-time students.<br />
Entry requirements<br />
Students are eligible to enter this course <strong>of</strong> study if they<br />
have satisfactorily completed an approved course at Year<br />
11 level or an approved equivalent. The course is not<br />
designed for school leavers. Applicants should have at least<br />
one year <strong>of</strong> appropriate industrial experience before<br />
undertaking the course. However, applicants who do not<br />
have the required industrial experience could still be<br />
eligible if they have current employment in an appropriate<br />
position.<br />
