Course description<br />
This is a two year full-time course. There are nineteen core<br />
subjects and students are required to choose two additional<br />
related subjects from the elective streams.<br />
Entry requirements<br />
Students are eligible to enter this course <strong>of</strong> study if<br />
they have satisfactorily completed Year 12, VCE or an<br />
approved equivalent. Mature-age entry is granted if the<br />
student is considered to have sufficient maturity and<br />
experience to undertake the course successfully.<br />

3500KD~ Associate Diploma <strong>of</strong> Social<br />
Science (Library and<br />
Information Studies)<br />
This course is <strong>of</strong>fered at the Prahran campus. The course is<br />
being phased out to be replaced by ACT3497 Diploma <strong>of</strong><br />
Library and Information Studies.<br />
Course aims<br />
To train library technicians for tasks requiring a<br />
combination <strong>of</strong> clerical and technical skills. Library<br />
technicians are supervised by librarians and may supervise<br />
and direct library clerks and other staff.<br />
Course descri~tion<br />
Students normally undertake this course over a four<br />
year period <strong>of</strong> part-time study. Day, evening and block<br />
release classes are available. Students normally attend<br />
classes for two hours a week for each subject they enrol<br />
for. Those enrolled for block release attend for blocks <strong>of</strong><br />
one, two or three days instead <strong>of</strong> on a weekly basis. On<br />
average two additional hours <strong>of</strong> work per week are<br />
required for assignments etc. There is no set number <strong>of</strong><br />
subjects to complete in any one year.<br />
Students choose the number <strong>of</strong> subjects they wish to study.<br />
Completion <strong>of</strong> twenty-three subjects (seventeen<br />
compulsory and six electives), and the equivalent <strong>of</strong> 840<br />
hours <strong>of</strong> paid approved work experience in a library<br />
entitles the student to receive an Associate Diploma <strong>of</strong><br />
Social Science (Library and Information Studies).<br />
Pr<strong>of</strong>essional recognition<br />
Students completing the course are qualified for<br />
admission as members <strong>of</strong> the Librarv Technicians' Section<br />
<strong>of</strong> the Australian Library and Information Association.<br />
Entry requirements<br />
Normally students are required to have completed Year<br />
12. Mature-age applicants may be accepted without<br />
this qualification. All students must be in paid<br />
library employment before they can commence the<br />
specialist library subjects because work experience is an<br />
integral part <strong>of</strong> the course. Applications may be made in<br />
anticipation that library employment will be found and<br />
students may study the non-library subjects while seeking<br />
employment.<br />
Course strudure<br />
Subjects must be con~pleted in the correct sequence<br />
and prerequisites met. Variations must be approved by<br />
course coordinators or heads <strong>of</strong> department.<br />
