General insurance covers all asDects <strong>of</strong> the insurance<br />
industry from general insurance principles to insurance<br />
sales and customer services. The certificates in General<br />
Insurance provide an integrated education in general<br />
insurance, and develop knowledge and skills necessary for<br />
underwriting, broking, administrative and supervisory<br />
positions in the insurance industry.<br />
Career potential<br />
There were approximately 26,000 people employed<br />
Australia-wide in the insurance industry in 1991. Trained,<br />
skilled and experienced insurance pr<strong>of</strong>essionals, and those<br />
still studying are frequently sought by the insurance<br />
industry.<br />

Students may be able to undertake all or part <strong>of</strong> this course<br />
through the <strong>University</strong> Off-Campus Centre. Inquiries<br />

Entry requirements<br />
The normal pre-requisite for entry into this course is the<br />
satisfactory completion <strong>of</strong> an approved course <strong>of</strong> study at<br />
Year 12 and current employment in the insurance industry.<br />
However, persons without the Year 12 requirement who<br />
are considered to be sufficiently mature and experienced to<br />
undertake the course successfully may be admitted. This<br />
particularly applies to mature-age applicants and people<br />
with relevant insurance industry experience.<br />
English language requirements<br />
Subjects are conducted in English. Students with English<br />
as a second language require advanced level English.<br />
Generally students must have sufficient English language<br />
skills to understand oral instructions, read technical books<br />
and magazines, make oral presentations, and prepare<br />
written reports. Full-time students will be given the<br />
opportunity for extra English tuition <strong>of</strong> up to three hours<br />
per week.<br />
Pr<strong>of</strong>essional recognition<br />
Completion <strong>of</strong> the certificate entitles students to apply for<br />
members hi^ <strong>of</strong> the Australian Insurance Institute.<br />
~om~letio; <strong>of</strong> the Diploma academically qualifies students<br />
for admission as an associate member <strong>of</strong> the Australian<br />
Insurance Institute. The Australian Insurance Institute<br />
applies a six year rule on exemption applications for<br />
students transferring to their self-study program.<br />
Course duration<br />
The Diploma consists <strong>of</strong> twenty-four modules normally<br />
completed over four to five years part-time. Certificate I11<br />
consists <strong>of</strong> nine modules. To complete Certificate IV an<br />
additional seven modules are required.<br />

The course is not normally undertaken on a full-time basis.<br />
Anyone considering this must see the Head, Department <strong>of</strong><br />
Financial Studies prior to completing their application<br />
form.<br />
Part-time applicants (semester 1 and 2)<br />
All part-time applicants must apply directly to the School<br />
<strong>of</strong> Business and Information Systems. Applications close<br />
on 30 November and 31 May for semester two enrolment.<br />
Late applications may be accepted depending on<br />
availability <strong>of</strong> places.<br />
