with Artic Magnum Deluxe Screen Enlargement s<strong>of</strong>tware is<br />
available at both Prahran and Hawthorn to enable access to<br />
the catalogue and various Windows applications for those<br />
with visual disabilities. All levels <strong>of</strong> Prahran and Hawthorn<br />
and Lilydale libraries are wheelchair accessible , and several<br />
adjustable height tables are available for use at Prahran.<br />
Storage lockers are available on request and TTY<br />
telephones are located at the Information desk at both<br />
Prahran (9214 6833) and Hawthorn (9214 8840). For more<br />

Office for Quality and Educat~onal<br />
Development<br />
The Office for Quality and Educational Development<br />
(QED) was formed in 1996. It employs the principles and<br />
practices <strong>of</strong> quality management in order to assist staff with<br />
their efforts to achieve the <strong>University</strong>'s strategic teaching<br />
and learning, and institutional development goals. QED<br />
consists <strong>of</strong> the following core functions:<br />
the course evaluation system - to survey student and<br />
graduate perceptions <strong>of</strong> course quality;<br />
the Educational development Unit, to assist the<br />
pr<strong>of</strong>essional development <strong>of</strong> teaching staff;<br />
the Quality Unit, to support and develop the<br />
improvement <strong>of</strong> <strong>University</strong>'s management <strong>of</strong> its work<br />
processes through the <strong>Swinburne</strong> Quality Management<br />
System (SQMS).<br />
Through these functions QED provides a range <strong>of</strong> projects,<br />
training programs and consultancy services to help<br />
continuously improve the quality <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong>'s<br />
educational programs, related services and administrative<br />
procedures<br />
Transport, Access and Parking<br />
Public transport<br />
Hawthorn campus<br />
<strong>Swinburne</strong>'s Hawthorn campus is well served by public<br />
transport. Trains stop frequently at the Glenferrie Station,<br />
which is a two-minute walk from the campus. The station<br />
is on the Alamein, Belgrave and Lilydale lines and there are<br />
also frequent trains into the city.<br />
Trams and buses also serve the area. The No. 69 tram<br />
travels along Glenferrie Road from Kew to St Kilda, and<br />
connects with several other tram lines, and buses travel<br />
along Burwood Road No. 732 to Box Hill) and Auburn<br />
Road (No. 624 from Kew to Chadstone Shopping Centre).<br />
Prahran campus<br />
Prahran campus is close to the Prahran Station, on the<br />
Sandringham line, with frequent trains into the city. It is<br />
also very well served by trams with the No. 16 Glen Iris<br />
tram stopping outside the door in High Street, as well as<br />
the North Richmond - Prahran (no. 78,79) in nearby<br />
Chapel Street.<br />
<strong>Swinburne</strong> at Lilydale<br />
<strong>Swinburne</strong> at Lilydale is served by train and buses. The<br />
campus is on the Lilydale train line. Numerous buses leave<br />
from Lilydale Station.<br />

Limited <strong>of</strong>f-street parking facilities are provided for fulltime<br />
and part-time students.<br />
Conditions <strong>of</strong> use<br />
Use <strong>of</strong> car parks is strictly at the owner's risk and is subject<br />
to:<br />
a current <strong>Swinburne</strong> parking permit or sticker valid for<br />
the car park in question being clearly displayed on<br />
the windscreen;<br />
availability <strong>of</strong> space in the car park;<br />
the car being within a marked bay;<br />
any fees or charges being paid;<br />
the driver's observance <strong>of</strong> parking signs or directions<br />
given by any <strong>of</strong> <strong>Swinburne</strong> Parking or Security<br />
Officers.<br />
Parking permits<br />
Available from Facilities and Services. Student identity card<br />
is required.<br />
Part-time students<br />
Evening and other part-time students may not leave cars in<br />
<strong>Swinburne</strong> car parks during the day while they attend<br />
work.<br />
Short course students<br />
Students require a parking permit issued by the <strong>of</strong>fice<br />
organising the course. Availability <strong>of</strong> space is not assured.<br />
Hours <strong>of</strong> access<br />
The main car parks open at 7.45am and close at 10.00pm.<br />
Car parks on some campuses are open twenty-four hours.<br />
Students are warned against leaving cars in parks overnight.<br />
Infringement <strong>of</strong> parking rules<br />
Failure to comply with parking regulations could incur a<br />
Parking Infringement Notice <strong>of</strong> up to $40.00. Under the<br />
Road Safety Act 1986, the fines are enforceable in court.<br />
Those who abuse the system are also liable to have their<br />
parking privileges withdrawn and the parking permits for<br />
their cars revoked.<br />
