To introduce students to the study <strong>of</strong> crime, substantive<br />

criminological knowledge for policy formulation and crime<br />

TH269 Australian Criminal Justice System<br />

Objectives and content<br />

The purpose <strong>of</strong> this module is to provide students with the<br />

knowledge and understanding <strong>of</strong> the relevant criminal<br />

justice functions <strong>of</strong> law enforcement systems, sentencing,<br />

correctional and court systems, within the framework <strong>of</strong><br />

the Australian social environment. Students should also be<br />

familiar with recent changes in legislation, government<br />

policy interpretation and implementation and the<br />

introduction <strong>of</strong> privatisation within the fields <strong>of</strong> the<br />

constituent subject content.<br />

TH270 Justice Delivery<br />

Obiectives and content<br />

~n'com~letion <strong>of</strong> this module students will have gained a<br />

better awareness and understanding <strong>of</strong> the origins and<br />

nature <strong>of</strong> Australia's multicultural society. By providing<br />

accurate information as well as opportunities for students<br />

to make contact with aboriginal and migrant individuals<br />

and services it seeks to dispel popular myths and develop<br />

attitudinal change and empathy in the participants.<br />

TH272 Social Research and Analysis<br />

TH273 Occupational Health and Safety<br />

20 hours total Hawthorn Assessment: oral and written<br />

A subject in the Diploma <strong>of</strong> Social Science (Justice).<br />

Objectives and content<br />

The module is intended to train participants to ensure that<br />

their ecti responsibilities under health and safety legislation,<br />

codes <strong>of</strong> practice, and Australian and other standards are<br />

met. It aims to equip participants with the skills,<br />

knowledge, and attitudes required to identify health and<br />

safety hazards encountered in the workplace and to employ<br />

appropriate methods <strong>of</strong> control, and to promote the<br />

provision <strong>of</strong> a safe and healthy workplace environment.<br />

TH303 Images <strong>of</strong> Australia Through Film and<br />

Television<br />

Hawthorn<br />

A subject in the Tertiary Entry Program.<br />

Objectives and content<br />

The first part <strong>of</strong> the course introduces students to some <strong>of</strong><br />

the key terms and concepts involved in understanding films<br />

as commentaries. Students will be required to complete an<br />

initial exercise designed to focus on such interpretative<br />

ideas. The second part <strong>of</strong> the course is concerned with<br />

analysis <strong>of</strong> a range <strong>of</strong> issues derived from an examination <strong>of</strong><br />

Australian contexts as they are revealed, interpreted and<br />

structured through selected Australian films.<br />

TH306 Research Skills<br />

Hawthorn<br />

A subject in the Tertiary Entry Program.<br />

Objectives and content<br />

The first part <strong>of</strong> the course introduces students to some <strong>of</strong><br />

the key terms involved in understanding arguments and<br />

interpretation and evaluation <strong>of</strong> research data and<br />

methodology. Students will be required to complete a series<br />

<strong>of</strong> exercises designed to focus on such structures. The<br />

second part <strong>of</strong> the course is concerned with students<br />

proposing and deciding on their own research studies<br />

within an Australian context and incorporating selected<br />

research techniques to develop a research report, reflecting<br />

a carefully considered and implemented research strategy.<br />

Com~uter literacv is seen as an im~ortant skill and will be<br />

taught at various stages throughout the course. Selected<br />

assessment items will be required to be presented utilising<br />

computer skills, in particular word processing.
