Objectives and content<br />

The aim <strong>of</strong> this subject is to provide a framework for<br />

coping with people in crisis situations. This subject will<br />

cover stress and post-trauma stress, crisis situations, mental<br />

illness, behavioural disorders, drug and alcohol issues,<br />

aggression and conflict, sexual assault, domestic violence,<br />

child abuse, cross cultural and gender issues and crisis help.<br />

TH255 Community Law 2<br />

3 hours per week for 18 weeks Hawthorn Assessment:<br />

Objectives and content<br />

The aim <strong>of</strong> this subject is to provide basic skills and<br />

knowledge required for para-legal workers in the justice<br />

system. Areas to be covered include criminal law, young<br />

people and the law, police, Magistrates' Court,<br />

Administrative Review, complaints against government,<br />

Social Security, immigration, employment, local<br />

government, legal pr<strong>of</strong>ession and advocacy.<br />

TH256 Elective 1<br />

3 hours per week for 18 weeks Hawthorn<br />

A subject in the Diploma <strong>of</strong> Social Science (Justice).<br />

Objectives and content<br />

Appropriate electives can be selected from within the<br />

Diploma <strong>of</strong> Community Services (Community<br />

Development) and/or other relevant courses <strong>of</strong> study.<br />

Selection <strong>of</strong> zlectives will be finalised after consultation<br />

with the coordinator.<br />

TH257 Elective 2<br />

3 hoursper week for I8 weeks Hawthorn<br />

Objectives and content<br />

This module will provide students with a general<br />

introductory framework <strong>of</strong> Australian law making bodies<br />

and various aspects <strong>of</strong> the law within which to critically<br />

examine the criminal justice system and develop the<br />

participant's legal research skills.<br />

Objectives and content<br />

The purpose <strong>of</strong> this module is to familiarise the student<br />

with the judicial system, procedures <strong>of</strong> conducting an<br />

investigation, case file management, preservation and<br />

recording <strong>of</strong> evidence, the law <strong>of</strong> evidence, presentation <strong>of</strong><br />

evidence in a court <strong>of</strong> law and witness responsibilities,<br />

court procedure and etiquette.<br />

TH263 Administrative Law for Justice Studies<br />

3 hours per week for 18 weeks Hawthorn Assessment:<br />

case study, short answers, multiple choice, class presentation<br />

Objectives and content<br />

The purpose <strong>of</strong> this module is to provide the learner with<br />

knowledge <strong>of</strong> the general principles <strong>of</strong> administrative law<br />

and legislative provisions governing review <strong>of</strong><br />

administrative decisions.<br />

TH264 Statute and Criminal Law<br />

The purpose <strong>of</strong> this module is to introduce and familiarise<br />

learners with aspects <strong>of</strong> statute and criminal law as might<br />

be relevant to a person working in justice delivery.<br />

Obiectives and content<br />

These modules explore the nature and development <strong>of</strong><br />

Australian society, the major forces and historical events<br />

that have shaped Australian society, the nature and<br />

experience <strong>of</strong> inequality, the power structures and<br />

processes that influence and maintain inequality and some<br />

<strong>of</strong> the major theories that explain why our society operates<br />

this way.<br />

TH267 Applied Psychology<br />

3 hours aer week for 18 weeks Hawthorn Assessment:<br />

multiple choice questions, short answer test, discussion paper<br />

Obj ves and content<br />

The purpose <strong>of</strong> this module is to introduce students to the<br />
