Students are introduced to the basic operation<br />

Content<br />
A subject designed for students who have not had<br />
the opportunity to study sciences before. It is not a<br />
practical course but a chance to explore theoretical and<br />
historical development <strong>of</strong> a number <strong>of</strong> basic scientific<br />
fields. The areas covered include astronomy, chemistry,<br />
evolution, genetics, medicine etc.<br />

An elective subject which is designed to introduce<br />
students to the main components <strong>of</strong> a library preservation/<br />
conservation program and to give them an awareness <strong>of</strong> the<br />
causes <strong>of</strong>, and materials for remedying deterioration. Some<br />
basic practical skills and techniques for both preventing<br />
and remedying the deterioration <strong>of</strong> library materials will be<br />
imparted.<br />

The compulsory subject is designed to introduce students<br />

types <strong>of</strong> computer applications. The elective subject is<br />
designed to extend students' skills by working with<br />
additional s<strong>of</strong>tware packages. No prior knowledge <strong>of</strong><br />
computers is assumed.<br />

These two subjects cover the descriptive cataloguing for<br />
a range <strong>of</strong> materials, using automated and manual<br />
systems. The maintenance <strong>of</strong> catalogues and the generation<br />
<strong>of</strong> catalogue products is explained. Computerised<br />
cataloguing and authority record procedures are covered.<br />
