Students learn to operate a range <strong>of</strong> library equipment<br />

safely and efficiently. Aspects covered include health and<br />

safety issues and equipment maintenance.<br />

LISO11 Introduction to Instruction in Library Use<br />

20 hours<br />

Students learn to deliver instruction on some aspect <strong>of</strong><br />

library facilities or services, either on a one-to-one basis or<br />

to small groups. This includes the preparation, design,<br />

delivery and evaluation <strong>of</strong> an instruction session.<br />

LlSO12 Working in the lnformation Industry<br />

20 hours<br />

Students investigate career paths within the information<br />

industry and learn how to apply for a job and participate in<br />

job interviews. Library industry competencies are also<br />

covered.<br />

LIS013 Database Searching and Retrieval<br />

30 hours<br />

Students learn about different types <strong>of</strong> databases, their<br />

modes <strong>of</strong> operation and how to access them. Searching<br />

stategies are also covered.<br />

LISO 14 Industry Placement 1<br />

IOOhours<br />

Students will be placed in a workplace in the library<br />

industry with a nominated industry supervisor. The skills<br />

to be developed include: working effectively as part <strong>of</strong> a<br />

team; developing technical skills within the library<br />

environment; and initiating a network <strong>of</strong> industry contacts.<br />

40 hours <strong>of</strong> elective modules must also be completed but<br />

the elective modules <strong>of</strong>fered will vary from semester to<br />

9. semester.<br />

9 LIS020 Basic Reference Skills<br />

Students learn to select and use ready reference resources;<br />

to communicate with clients and interpret their<br />

information needs; and to understand and apply legal and<br />

ethical requirements in the receipt <strong>of</strong> information.<br />

LIS021 Research Sources and Strategies<br />

30 hours<br />

Students learn to identify potential information sources to<br />

satisfy clients' information needs; to evaluate information<br />

resources; to conduct a reference interview; and to<br />

undertake search strategies using a range <strong>of</strong> sources.<br />

LIS022 Lending Services 2<br />

20 hours<br />

Students learn to obtain information from outside sources<br />

using inter-library loans and document delivery. Topics<br />

covered include local, national and international policies<br />

for interlibrarv lending:<br />

selection <strong>of</strong> sources for<br />

interlibrary lending and document delivery; generation and<br />

despatch as well as receipt <strong>of</strong> interlibrary and document<br />

delivery materials including the financial transactions<br />

involved.<br />

LIS023 Bibliographic Description and Access<br />

60 hours<br />

Students learn to construct bibliographic descriptions for<br />

catalogue entries. This involves the use <strong>of</strong> the Anglo-<br />

American Cataloguing Rules Second Edition Revised.<br />

Other aspects covered include the creation and<br />

maintenance <strong>of</strong> name authority records and on-going<br />

catalogue maintenance.<br />

LIS024 Library Classification<br />

30 hours<br />

Students learn to classify both standard and non-standard<br />

library materials using the Dewey Decimal Classification<br />

Scheme.<br />

LIS025 Subject Access<br />

40 hours<br />

Students learn to provide subject access and control <strong>of</strong><br />

library materials. Aspects covered include subject<br />

catalogung principles, subject analysis, thesauri and subject<br />

heading lists, authority control, and subject cataloguing<br />

techniques.<br />

LIS026 Cataloguing Procedures<br />

30 hours<br />

Students learn to create and maintain records for a s~ecified<br />

cl ent group. Copy cataloguing, original cataloguing, use<br />

and international communication standards e.g.<br />

USMARC, cataloguing policies, procedures and work<br />

flows are covered.<br />

LIS027 Library Acquisitions<br />

20 hours<br />

This module covers verification procedures and .<br />

acquisitions methods, with a special emphasis on serials<br />

acquisitions. Supplier performance and financial records<br />

for acquisitions work are also covered.<br />

LIS028 Collection Development<br />

30 hours<br />

This module enables students to develop their knowledge<br />

and skills in evaluating a library's collection against library<br />

policies and clients' needs. The module concentrates on<br />

the purpose and role <strong>of</strong> collection development policies<br />

and selection and disposal proposals and options.<br />

LIS029Managing an lnformation Agency<br />

Environment<br />

40 hours<br />

Students learn to manage and maintain a client service<br />

effectively. Aspects include planning work activities to<br />

meet specific library objectives; establishing standards, and<br />

then the measurements and controls to monitor how the<br />

objectives are achieved; and the review, evaluation and<br />

acquisition <strong>of</strong> equipment, fittings and furniture.
