LISOO1 The lnformation Industry<br />
Gives an overview <strong>of</strong> the services, facilities and functions <strong>of</strong><br />
various libraries and agencies which comprise the<br />
information industry. Visits to libraries are a vital part <strong>of</strong><br />
this module.<br />
LIS002 lnformation Literacy<br />
20 hours<br />
Students develop their information skills which involves<br />
the analysis <strong>of</strong> &formation needs, the location <strong>of</strong><br />
information to satisfy those needs, learning to use<br />
information efficiently and presenting it effectively.<br />
LIS003 lnformation as a Product<br />
30 hours<br />
Students learn to identify the characteristics and uses <strong>of</strong><br />
information and its value in business, industrial, academic<br />
and personal settings. They gain an overview <strong>of</strong> the main<br />
types and formats <strong>of</strong> information, and the legal and ethical<br />
issues associated with information storage and provision.<br />
LIS004 Collection Maintenance<br />
30 hours<br />
Students learn to handle, store, maintain and preserve<br />
library materials in an appropriate and safe environment.<br />
Housing and storage facilities, types and causes <strong>of</strong><br />
deterioration , in-house repairs, processing <strong>of</strong> library<br />
materials, shelving procedures, and stocktaking are all<br />
covered.<br />
LIS005 Lending Services 1<br />
20 hours<br />
Students learn the principles <strong>of</strong> library circulations systems<br />
including circulation policies. Other aspects include loans<br />
desk work, reserve collections, interlibrary loans, financial<br />
transactions and serial circulation systems.<br />
LIS006 Bibliographic Control<br />
30 hours<br />
This module provides an introduction to bibliographic<br />
standards and control by introducing students to various<br />
cataloguing standards, particularly those used for<br />
descriptive cataloguing. The main topics covered are<br />
International Standard Bibliographic Description formats,<br />
filing <strong>of</strong> bibliographic records, and the uploading and<br />
downloading <strong>of</strong> cataloguing records.<br />
LIS007 Materials Receipt<br />
20 hours<br />
Students learn to undertake routine processing <strong>of</strong> newly<br />
acquired library materials, including checking-in, claiming<br />
and accessioning.<br />
LIS008 Library Ordering Procedures<br />
30 hours<br />
Students learn to order a variety <strong>of</strong> materials for a library<br />
using established bibliographic checking and verification<br />
procedures. The role <strong>of</strong> acquisitions, processing order<br />
requests, searching and verifying order requests, types <strong>of</strong><br />
orders, sources <strong>of</strong> supply, preparing and despatching <strong>of</strong><br />
orders, maintaining order records and processing invoices<br />
are covered.<br />
LIS009 Library Promotion and Display<br />
30 hours<br />
Students learn to assist in the promotion <strong>of</strong> library services<br />
including the design and creation <strong>of</strong> library displays and<br />
signs; the promotion <strong>of</strong> resources and facilities; and the<br />
design and production <strong>of</strong> bookmarks, booklists, brochures<br />
and other publicity material.<br />
