Services: Out <strong>of</strong> School Hours<br />
Care<br />
This course is <strong>of</strong>fered at the Prahran campus and provides<br />
graduates with the skills needed to work effectively as<br />
assistants in before school, after school, and vacation care<br />
services with children from 5-12 years.<br />
Career potential<br />
This newly accredited course has state wide accreditation<br />
and has been much sought after by the providers <strong>of</strong> the<br />
care for 5-12 year olds as appropriate training for<br />
employees in before school, after school, and vacation care<br />
services.<br />
Recognition <strong>of</strong> prior learning<br />
Students can apply for recognition <strong>of</strong> prior learning to the<br />
Head <strong>of</strong> Department, Child Studies and Health.<br />
Entry requirements<br />
The minimum age for entry is sixteen years. Applicants<br />
must have demonstrated interest in and suitability for work<br />
in the children's services field. English language and<br />
conceptual skills must be sufficient for successful course<br />
completion and applicants need to have the physical and<br />
psychological health necessary to meet course<br />
requirements.<br />
An interview may be required.<br />
Applications are encouraged from both men and women.<br />
People <strong>of</strong> non-English speaking backgrounds are<br />
encouraged to apply.<br />

Persons directly entering from secondary school need to<br />
have successfully completed year 11.<br />
4 Mature age applicants need to be eighteen years old and to<br />
g have left secondary school at least one year ago.<br />
People who have completed the Certificate in Child Care<br />
Home Based and the Certificate in Occupational Studies<br />

Social and Community Services are also eligible to apply.<br />

Further studies pathways<br />
Graduates <strong>of</strong> the Certificate I11 in Children's Services: Out<br />
-p <strong>of</strong> School Hours Care receive generous credits into the<br />
3 Diploma <strong>of</strong> Community Service (Child Care). They also<br />
receive extensive credits into the Certificate I11 in<br />
Children's Services: Early Childhood Care.<br />
Course duration<br />
The course is conducted over one year part-time.<br />
Practical work with children is an essential component <strong>of</strong><br />
the courses.<br />
The course includes a minimum <strong>of</strong> 35 days <strong>of</strong> field placement.<br />

~IOOMFA Certificate in Child Care<br />
(Homebased) Family Day Care,<br />
Distance Education, Nanny and<br />
Koori Streams<br />
This course is <strong>of</strong>fered at the Prahran campus or as<br />
distance education at a chosen place within the caregivers<br />
own council or shire or by correspondence. This<br />
Certificate is designed to provide training for ~eople<br />
woyking as homebased caregivers. The course is also<br />
<strong>of</strong>fered to Koori caregivers and foster care workers. It can<br />
be taken as a whole or as individual subjects over a period<br />
<strong>of</strong> time. It is designed to <strong>of</strong>fer caregivers maximum<br />
flexibility.<br />
Further studies pathwiys<br />
Students who have completed the course can apply<br />
for exemptions in other TAFE courses, e.g. students may<br />
be granted exemption from up to 40% <strong>of</strong> the Certificate I11<br />
in Children's Services.<br />
