2307AAC Certificate Ill in Children's<br />

Services: Early Childhood<br />

Care (General and Bilingual<br />

streams)<br />

The course will be <strong>of</strong>fered to both General and Bilingual<br />

Streams.<br />

This course is <strong>of</strong>fered on the Prahran campus and provides<br />

graduates with the skills needed to assist in the care <strong>of</strong><br />

infants and young children in subsidised and private child<br />

care centres and kindergartens. Graduates may also gain<br />

employment in private homes.<br />

Career potential<br />

This course has state wide accreditation and is recognised<br />

under the Child Care Workers award as the appropriate<br />

training for Child Care Assistants.<br />

The Certificate I11 in Children's Services: Early Childhood<br />

Care provides an accredited program for people to work<br />

effectively as assistants in centre based care, long day care,<br />

occasional care and pre-school centres.<br />

Course duration<br />

The course is conducted over one year part-time.<br />

Practical work with children is an essential component <strong>of</strong><br />

the course.<br />

The course includes a minimum <strong>of</strong> 36 days <strong>of</strong> field placement.<br />

Recognition <strong>of</strong> prior learning<br />

Students can apply for recognition <strong>of</strong> prior learning to the<br />

Head <strong>of</strong> Department, Child Studies and Health.<br />

Further studies pathways<br />

Graduates <strong>of</strong> the Certificate I11 in Children's Services:<br />

Early Childhood Care receive extensive credits equivalent<br />

to one year part-time into the Diploma <strong>of</strong> Community<br />

Service (Child Care). They also receive very extensive<br />

credits into the Certificate 111 in Children's Services: Out <strong>of</strong><br />

School Hours Care.<br />

Entry reauirements<br />

The minimum age for entry is sixteen years. Applicants<br />

must have demonstrated interest in and suitability for work<br />

in the children's services field. English language and<br />

conceptual skills must be sufficient for successful course<br />

completion, and applicants need to have the physical and<br />

psychological health necessary to meet course<br />

requirements.<br />

An interview may be required. Applications are<br />

encouraged from both men and women. People <strong>of</strong> non-<br />

English speaking backgrounds are encouraged ro apply.<br />

Persons entering directly from secondary school need to<br />

have successfully completed year 11.<br />

Mature age applicants need to be eighteen years old and to<br />

have left secondary school at least one year ago.<br />

People who have completed the Certificate in Child Care<br />

Home Based and the Certificate in Occupational Studies -<br />

Social and Community Services are also eligible to apply.<br />

Streams <strong>of</strong> the course<br />

General Stream - This stream is for students who are<br />

competent . in . English for both written and spoken<br />

communication.<br />

Bilingual Stream - This stream is for students from anon-<br />

English speaking background who:<br />

may have completed most <strong>of</strong> their schooling overseas<br />

have a basic understanding <strong>of</strong> written and spoken English.<br />
