Course availability, duration and location<br />

The Certificate IV in Health(Nursing) will be <strong>of</strong>fered by<br />

both <strong>Swinburne</strong> and Peninsula as a one year full-time<br />

course. Some part-time places may also be made available<br />

at <strong>Swinburne</strong>.<br />

Full-time students normally attend classes or<br />

undertake clinical placements for up to thirty hours a<br />

week. Classes are scheduled between 8.30am and 5.30pm.<br />

Clinical ~lacement attendance follows the shifts set by<br />

hospitals with the majority <strong>of</strong> placement shifts being from<br />

7.00am to 3.00pm but some shift attendance required<br />

between 3.00pm amd 11.00pm.<br />

<strong>Swinburne</strong><br />

In 1997 there will be an intake <strong>of</strong> between forty and sixty<br />

full-time students. There may also be an intake <strong>of</strong> twenty<br />

part-time students.<br />

<strong>Swinburne</strong> students will undertake approximately 65%<br />

<strong>of</strong> their classes at <strong>Swinburne</strong>'s Prahran campus and 35% at<br />

the Kingston Centre, Cheltenham. <strong>Swinburne</strong> Nursing<br />

Students(Koori Stream) will undertake classes at the<br />

Prahran campus and at the Aboriginal Community Elders<br />

Services. Clinical placement will be undertaken at the<br />

Kingston Centre and a range <strong>of</strong> other hospitals and nursing<br />

homes.<br />

Peninsula<br />

In 1997 there will be an intake <strong>of</strong> twenty full-time students.<br />

Peninsula students will undertake approximately 65%<br />

<strong>of</strong> their classes at Frankston TAFE and 35% at Mt. Eliza<br />

Centre, Peninsula. Clinical placements will be undertaken<br />

E at the Frankston and Mt. Eliza campuses <strong>of</strong> the Mt. Eliza<br />

r<br />

9 Centre and at a range <strong>of</strong> other hospitals and nursing homes.<br />

Residential and Community<br />

Services<br />

This course is <strong>of</strong>fered at the Prahran campus. The course<br />

is <strong>of</strong>fered in two areas <strong>of</strong> specialisation:<br />

Advanced Certificate in Residential and Community<br />

Services (Intellectual Disability) which is the recognised<br />

mandatory qualification for the position <strong>of</strong><br />

Intellectual Disability Services Officer (IDSO)<br />

Advanced Certificate in Residential and Community<br />

Services (Youth and Child Care) which is the<br />

recognised mandatory qualification for the position <strong>of</strong><br />

Youth and Child Care Officer (YACCO).<br />

Career ~otential<br />

The course ~rovides opportunities for a challenging career<br />

in government services (Department <strong>of</strong> Health and<br />

Community Services) and with the non-government sector<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Social and Community Services industry (SACS).<br />

Recognition <strong>of</strong> prior learning<br />

A student's prior experience and relevant training are an<br />

essential and valued part <strong>of</strong> selection into RACS. RPL is<br />

<strong>of</strong>fered in a number <strong>of</strong> subject areas, where the student can<br />

fully demonstrate competence already gained.<br />

Entry requirements<br />

Applicants may apply for entry under the VCE category or<br />

under the alternative category entry.<br />

Course duration<br />

The course is one year full-time and two years parttime.<br />

Students will undertake approximately twenty<br />

hours <strong>University</strong> based work each week, depending on<br />

field work, tutorials, etc. Placements during the course<br />

involve students being in an allocated workplace for six<br />

weeks at thirty-eight hours per week.<br />

There is a normal intake <strong>of</strong> twenty students.
