Course Duration<br />

The course will initially be provided only part-time at<br />

<strong>Swinburne</strong>, Prahran Campus, one afternoon and evening<br />

per week. The course will commence in March 1996 and is<br />

also likely to be <strong>of</strong>fered full-time in 1997.<br />

Entry Requirements<br />

The prospective students will normally be at least 23 years<br />

<strong>of</strong> age, and have the equivalent <strong>of</strong> one year full time<br />

experience in the last years, in the psychiatric disability<br />

area.<br />

Applicants will be able to demonstrate written and<br />

language skills equivalent to Year 12 standard. Values,<br />

attitudes and awareness <strong>of</strong> issues relevant to working with<br />

people with psychiatric disabilities are essential.<br />

2507~BC Diploma <strong>of</strong> Community<br />

Services (Welfare Studies)<br />

This course is <strong>of</strong>fered at the Prahran campus.<br />

The course is designed for people already employed and for<br />

those people wishing to enter the welfare area. <strong>Swinburne</strong><br />

is also committed to facilitating entry <strong>of</strong> people from non-<br />

English speaking backgrounds into welfare pr<strong>of</strong>essions. A<br />

feature <strong>of</strong> the course is a commitment to support individual<br />

students through tutorials.<br />

Career potential<br />

Welfare workers provide services to individuals, families<br />

and groups within a community service context, in both<br />

govirnment and non-government settings.<br />

This course provides students with the knowledge and<br />

skills to function effectively as pr<strong>of</strong>essional social welfare<br />

workers.<br />

Recognition <strong>of</strong> prior learning<br />

Student's prior experience and relevant training are an<br />

essential and valued part <strong>of</strong> selection into Residential and<br />

Community Services. RPL is <strong>of</strong>fered in a number <strong>of</strong><br />

subject areas, where the student can fully demonstrate<br />

comDetence alreadv pained. Information on RPL will be<br />

available from <strong>Swinburne</strong> at enrolment.<br />

Course duration<br />

The course is currently being <strong>of</strong>fered on a part-time basis<br />

with completion time <strong>of</strong> four years. The core subjects are<br />

provided in an extended session, one day each afternoon<br />

and evening at the Prahran campus.<br />

Course content<br />

Students are required to complete core welfare subjects plus<br />

electives, seminars and skills workshops. Students also<br />

undertake the equivalent <strong>of</strong> fourteen weeks in field<br />

education (placements) over the whole course.<br />

Entry requirements<br />

Prospective students should be at least twenty years <strong>of</strong> age<br />

and have two or more years <strong>of</strong> relevant experience in<br />

working (waged or unwaged) in the welfare area.<br />

Admission to the course is dependent on the ability <strong>of</strong> the<br />

applicant to demonstrate app;opriate maturity and<br />

interpersonal skills. Students should have completed a year<br />

12 or equivalent study, however special entry may be<br />

available on the basis <strong>of</strong> work experience, previous study<br />

or demonstrated skills.<br />
