General and pr<strong>of</strong>essional electives enable students to<br />

extend knowledge and skills relating to areas <strong>of</strong> special<br />

interest. Students may select subjects relating to particular<br />

aspects <strong>of</strong> children's services to strengthen employment<br />

opportunities in that area. Electives are designed to<br />

enhance personal development and growth and to promote<br />

articulation with higher education programs.<br />

Development)<br />

This course is <strong>of</strong>fered at the Prahran campus. The course<br />

B aims to give training and qualifications for people working<br />

in community organisations. It is suitable for mature-age<br />

4. people with experience in community work and/or few<br />

P formal qualifications in the area.<br />

n This course is designed for people employed as community<br />

8 development workers and for those people wishing to<br />

enter the industry. It provides students with the knowledge<br />

and skills required to function effectively as community<br />

development workers as identified in the Community<br />

Development Workers Award (Australian Services Union).<br />

Recognition <strong>of</strong> prior learning (RPL)<br />

Students may choose to apply for WL. Details will be<br />

made available at time <strong>of</strong> entry into the course.<br />

Further studies pathways<br />

Course graduates receive the TAFE accredited Diploma <strong>of</strong><br />

Community Service (Community Development). Upon<br />

completion <strong>of</strong> the Associate Diploma students have the<br />

option to continue studies in degree courses in Community<br />

Development at the Victoria <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Technology</strong>,<br />

Deakin <strong>University</strong> or in the Arts degree course<br />

at <strong>Swinburne</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Technology</strong>.<br />

Entry requirements<br />

Prospective students should be at least twenty-three years<br />

<strong>of</strong> age and have had two years experience in community<br />

development work (either paid or unpaid) since completing<br />

year twelve.<br />

Preference will be given to prospective students who<br />

are already working (paid or voluntary) in the field. There<br />

are limited places for students who are unable to fulfil all<br />

entry requirements.<br />

Course duration<br />

The course has full-time and part-time study modes. The<br />

full-time course is taken over two years and the part-time<br />

course takes up to four years. Intake dates are subject to<br />

variation but will be advertised.<br />
