Services (Child Care)<br />

Prahran campus <strong>of</strong>fers the Diploma <strong>of</strong> Community<br />

Service(Chi1d Care), a course designed to provide the<br />

skills, knowledge and understanding required for those<br />

who enjoy children and who wish to take up responsible<br />

positions working with them. Child care graduates provide<br />

care for the social, emotional, physical and educational<br />

needs <strong>of</strong> infants and children up to the age <strong>of</strong> six. They also<br />

work closely with parents in fostering children's<br />

development. The course provides up-to-date training for a<br />

wide range <strong>of</strong> positions caring for children from birth to<br />

six years <strong>of</strong> age. In addition to knowledge gained in classes,<br />

students gain 'hands-on' experience working with babies<br />

and young children in child care centres, kindergartens,<br />

maternity units and other settings.<br />

Career potential<br />

The majority <strong>of</strong> graduates work in child care centres as<br />

qualified staff responsible for providing a program <strong>of</strong> care<br />

and education to children under six. Some gain positions<br />

in family day care schemes, maternity hospitals, private<br />

homes, pre-school play centres and other similar<br />

institutions. Successful graduates receive the Diploma <strong>of</strong><br />

Community Service(Chi1d Care) from <strong>Swinburne</strong><br />

<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Technology</strong>. These qualifications are highly<br />

regarded in the child care area and entitle graduates to<br />

work in the children's services field in the capacity <strong>of</strong><br />

qualified staff.<br />

Recognition <strong>of</strong> prior learning<br />

Persons who have undertaken related studies at other post<br />

secondarv institutions in Victoria. interstate or overseas<br />

should contact the Head <strong>of</strong> Department prior to lodging an<br />

application for entry to the course with exemptions.<br />

Specific credits are available for hospital trained<br />

mothercraft nurses, and for holders <strong>of</strong> the Certificate I11 in<br />

Children's Services. Recognition <strong>of</strong> prior learning<br />

opportunities are available.<br />

Further studies pathways<br />

Graduates <strong>of</strong> the Diploma <strong>of</strong> Community Service (Child<br />

Care) receive three semesters credit into the Bachelor<br />

<strong>of</strong> Early Childhood Studies <strong>of</strong>fered by the School <strong>of</strong><br />

Early Childhood Studies (Melbourne <strong>University</strong>). Child<br />

Care graduates are also eligible for credit <strong>of</strong> up to six<br />

subjects in <strong>Swinburne</strong>'s Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Arts degree. Other<br />

credits are available at Victoria <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Technology</strong>,<br />

RMIT, Monash <strong>University</strong> and <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Ballarat.<br />

Entry requirements<br />

Applicants may apply for entry under the VCE category<br />

or under the Alternative Category Entry. The minimum<br />

I<br />

age for entry is seventeen years as at 1 February 1997.<br />

Course duration<br />

Prahran campus enrols the largest number <strong>of</strong> child<br />

care students in Victoria. Providing funding is maintained,<br />

1996 intakes are expected to be:<br />

ninety full-time students in the two year full-time<br />

course<br />

seventy part-time students in the four year part-time<br />

course.<br />

Full-time students attend <strong>University</strong> approximately twentyfive<br />

hours per week for 60% <strong>of</strong> each year. They spend<br />

thirty-five hours per week gaining experience in a range <strong>of</strong><br />

practical settings for 40°/o <strong>of</strong> the year.<br />

Part-time students will attend <strong>University</strong> one night a week<br />

between 2.30pm and 8.30pm in 1997.<br />
