3221 KEA Certificate <strong>of</strong> Occupational<br />
Studies: Recreation<br />
This is a one semester program for people wishing to enter<br />
a career in the leisure/recreation/tourism industries. The<br />
course will provide participants with the skills and<br />
knowledge to enhance employment opportunities in the<br />
areas <strong>of</strong> fitness, recreation and tourism.<br />
Location<br />
This course will be held at the Hawthorn campus. Industry<br />
placements and fitness subjects may require some travel.<br />
Course aims<br />
The course aims:<br />
to develop basic knowledge, skills and attitudes to<br />
equip students for a range <strong>of</strong> employment<br />
opportunities within sport, fitness and general<br />
recreation areas;<br />
to provide experience in, and knowledge <strong>of</strong>, the sport/<br />
fitnesdrecreation areas in order that students can make<br />
a more informed choice <strong>of</strong> vocational and career paths;<br />
to develop communication and interpersonal skills, as<br />
well as self-confidence, identified as necessary in the<br />
sport/fitness/recreation areas;<br />
to enable students to gain a recognised credential and,<br />
where appropriate, credits in further education and<br />
training;<br />
to develop safety conscious attitudes to work.<br />
Career potential<br />
After completing the course students may seek<br />
employment in the following areas:<br />
sport, health and fitness centres<br />
sports clubs, tennis, bowls etc.<br />
outdoor recreation camps/parks/tours<br />
swim centres<br />
sports and adventure retail outlets<br />
land management agencies<br />
community health/rehabilitation<br />
Credit transfer - pathways<br />
A credit transfer system, known as the Pathways program,<br />
is in place at <strong>Swinburne</strong>. Through Pathways, students with<br />
one <strong>of</strong> a wide range <strong>of</strong> qualifications can gain entry into<br />
other courses. Students may go on to a range <strong>of</strong> TAFE<br />
courses including other certificates in fitness and<br />
recreation. Certain subjects have the potential for credit<br />
transfer.<br />
Entry requirements<br />
Ability to read and comprehend printed information in<br />
English<br />
ability to write in English<br />
ability to participate in small group activities<br />
ability to read and analyse data<br />
demonstrated interest, over the past two years, in a<br />
sport or recreational activity.<br />
Course duration<br />
The Certificate is a full-time course and takes eighteen<br />
weeks to complete.<br />

22008~~ Tertiary Entry Program<br />
This course is <strong>of</strong>fered at the Hawthorn campus. It is a<br />
'bridging' program which aims to attract mature-age<br />
students from a variety <strong>of</strong> backgrounds and to prepare<br />
students enrolled for subsequent entry into a Bachelor <strong>of</strong><br />
Arts degree at a university.<br />
In particular, the course is intended for mature-age students<br />
who have failed to gain entry into an arts degree course at<br />
a tertiary institution, or who are not qualified for entry<br />
into a tertiary institution in the area <strong>of</strong> arts, or who do not<br />
have a year twelve qualification or its equivalent.<br />
Further studies pathways<br />
The program <strong>of</strong>fers support and training in preparing<br />
a range <strong>of</strong> assessment tasks and helps provide the<br />
skills required to undertake tertiary programs for those<br />
students who are returning to study. Successful students<br />
who take up a place in the arts degree at <strong>Swinburne</strong><br />
<strong>University</strong> will be granted one general first year credit.<br />
