Course aims<br />

This course is designed for workers, waged or nona<br />

waged, who support people experiencing grief and loss. It<br />

9 aims to give an understanding <strong>of</strong> grief and loss processes,<br />

3 and provide skills in assisting those who grieve.<br />

Successful students are issued with a National Association<br />

for Loss and Grief (NALAG) accredited certificate.<br />

The course is designed to give students the opportunity to:<br />

have a knowledge <strong>of</strong> theories related to grief and loss;<br />

have an understanding <strong>of</strong> the support required to assist<br />

people in grief and loss situations;<br />

be able to identify the range <strong>of</strong> skills needed in grief<br />

and loss work. Although students will be introduced to<br />

a number <strong>of</strong> basic counselling skills, this course does<br />

not provide a pr<strong>of</strong>essional counselling qualification.<br />

Entry requirements<br />

Participants undertaking the course come from a wide<br />

variety <strong>of</strong> areas: nursing, social work, health and welfare,<br />

palliative care, pastoral care, workers in the funeral<br />

industry and from human resources, education and support<br />

and self- help groups. Prospective students should be <strong>of</strong><br />

mature-age (twenty-three and over) and have some<br />

experience <strong>of</strong> working with grief and loss. It is expected<br />

that students demonstrate a degree <strong>of</strong> sensitivity and<br />

empathy towards others in grief and loss situations.<br />

Students should indicate a readiness to undertake learning<br />

based on adult learning principles <strong>of</strong> sharing and<br />

cooperative responsibility between teachers and students.<br />

There are limited places available for special entry for those<br />

unable to meet all selection criteria.<br />

Further studies pathways<br />

Upon completion <strong>of</strong> the certificate students may negotiate<br />

an equivalent credit from a TAFE course within the<br />

communitv services and health field. There is a course<br />

proposal for a Graduate Certificate in Grief and Loss at<br />

Victoria <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Technology</strong> (Footscray Campus).<br />

Course availability and duration<br />

This course will be taken by part-time study over one year.<br />

Intake will be in February and continue for two semesters,<br />

each <strong>of</strong> fifteen weeks duration, until November. Class<br />

times will be Tuesday evening 6.00-10.00pm for both<br />

semesters. Students will be required to complete nine modules<br />

to gain the certificate. It may be possible to enrol in separate<br />

modules.<br />

Students are required to complete one assessment task<br />

for each module and attend 80% <strong>of</strong> the course to be awarded<br />

the certificate. There will be a variety <strong>of</strong> assessment methods<br />

including reports, presentations, case studies,<br />

discussion papers and group work.<br />
