Two courses <strong>of</strong> training are <strong>of</strong>fered. One prepares<br />

volunteers to work on a one-to-one basis with adult<br />

students who need individual tuition in the basics <strong>of</strong><br />

reading, writing and spelling. The second prepares<br />

volunteers to tutor mildly intellectually disabled adults in<br />

Studies)<br />

The Diploma in Administration and Services (General<br />

Studies) is available on the Prahran and Hawthorn Campus<br />

Course aims<br />

The Diploma in Administration and Services (General<br />

Studies) is designed to provide:<br />

broad-based training for employment in a range <strong>of</strong><br />

administrative and service occupations<br />

a pathway from TAFE into degrees in Arts/Social<br />

Science and Business, and into other specialist TAFE<br />

courses.The course is intended to equip students for<br />

employment in administrative, supervisory and related<br />

para-pr<strong>of</strong>essional jobs in the public and private sectors.<br />

These may include:<br />

service delivery to the public in government, semigovernment,<br />

community and business organisations<br />

public relations, information provision and media<br />

liaison<br />

research and project planning with responsibility for<br />

contributing to policy development, monitoring and<br />

evaluation<br />

human resources functions, including training and<br />

development and industrial relations<br />

Note that high levels <strong>of</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essional competence in these<br />

fields would require further study/training and relevant<br />

experience.<br />

Graduates <strong>of</strong> the Certificate IV (Year 1) will be equipped<br />

for employment in the same areas, with more limited<br />

functions and responsibilities.<br />

Students who complete the Training and Development<br />

Stream will also receive the Certificate IV in Workplace<br />

Training (Category 2) as nationally qualified trainers.<br />

Articulation and credit transfer<br />

Graduates <strong>of</strong> the Diploma will be eligible to apply for<br />

entry into Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Arts, Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Social Science and<br />

Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Business (<strong>Swinburne</strong>) degrees. Those selected<br />

will be eligible for credit transfer <strong>of</strong> up to 1.5 years <strong>of</strong> the<br />

BA Degree and a lesser proportion <strong>of</strong> the Bachelor <strong>of</strong><br />

Social Science and Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Business, depending on the<br />

subjects taken.<br />

Graduates <strong>of</strong> both the Certificate IV and the Diploma may<br />

apply for entry into other TAFE courses in Community<br />

Services, Arts, Human Resources and related Business<br />

fields, with credit transfer in relevant subjects.<br />

Course duration<br />

The course is two years <strong>of</strong> full-time study, and part-time<br />

studies will also be <strong>of</strong>fered. Successful completion <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Year 1 program gains the award <strong>of</strong> Certificate IV in<br />

Administration and Services (General Studies).<br />

Entry requirements<br />

Applications are invited from persons who have completed<br />

Certificate111 in Administration and Services (General<br />

Studies), Year 12 or equivalent, or who are mature age (21<br />

years +). Applicants who are not mature age should<br />

submit evidence <strong>of</strong> their secondary education.<br />

Course structure<br />

Core modules are compulsory throughout.<br />

Elective modules are to be chosen as follows:<br />

Year 1 (Certificate IV) - two modules<br />

Year 2 (Diploma) -two streams, each relating to specific<br />

areas <strong>of</strong> employment and/or further study.<br />
