2 1 OOLIG/LIH Certificates <strong>of</strong> General<br />

Education for Adults<br />

These courses are <strong>of</strong>fered at the Hawthorn and Prahran<br />

campuses. The Certificates <strong>of</strong> General Education for Adults<br />

are designed for people from English and non-English<br />

speaking backgrounds who left school before year 11 and<br />

want to improve their reading, writing, maths and general<br />

education. The courses <strong>of</strong>fer four levels <strong>of</strong> the Victorian Adult<br />

English Language Literacy and Numeracy Accreditation<br />

Framework.<br />

Career potential<br />

The courses provide a developmental pathway from the<br />

earliest stages <strong>of</strong> reading and writing to preparation for a<br />

wide range <strong>of</strong> employment, vocational training, TAFE and<br />

further education options.<br />

Recognition <strong>of</strong> prior learning<br />

The flexible course structure and entry arrangements are<br />

based on the philosophy <strong>of</strong> recognition <strong>of</strong> prior learning.<br />

Further studies pathways<br />

On successful completion <strong>of</strong> level four <strong>of</strong> the<br />

certificate students may undertake:<br />

TAFE certificate courses<br />

vocational training courses<br />

VCE<br />

workplace training.<br />

Entry requirements<br />

Adults with incomplete schooling; level one will be <strong>of</strong>fered<br />

to adults who have yet to gain competence as independent<br />

readers and writers.<br />

Course duration<br />

P The courses can be undertaken on a full-time (twenty<br />

hours per week) or part-time basis. Intakes are flexible and<br />

appropriate level for each subject.<br />

in Work Education<br />

This course is <strong>of</strong>fered at the Hawthorn campus. The course<br />

aims to provide people with special learning needs with<br />

basic literacy, numeracy and vocational training skills.<br />

Career potential<br />

The course introduces students to an age-appropriate<br />

learning setting, extends the opportunity to participate in<br />

recreational activities and helps to develop a range <strong>of</strong><br />

vocational skills that can be applied in the workplace.<br />

Recognition <strong>of</strong> prior learning<br />

The individual education plan designed for each student is<br />

based on the philosophy <strong>of</strong> recognition <strong>of</strong> prior learning.<br />

Further studies pathways<br />

On completion <strong>of</strong> the course the students are assisted<br />

in finding employment and/or where appropriate are<br />

encouraged to pursue further studies and training.<br />

Entry requirements<br />

Young people, minimum age <strong>of</strong> sixteen years, with a mild<br />

intellectual disability or a history <strong>of</strong> learning difficulties<br />

needing special educational assistance to prepare for the<br />

workforce.<br />

Course duration<br />

Intake dates are flexible and subject to variation but will<br />

be advertised. The course is flexible and has full-time study<br />

modes. The course runs for 1200 hours which may be<br />

spread over two years.<br />

Students are required to attend all classes and to participate<br />

in practical placements.<br />
