2 5 0 3 Diploma ~ ~ ~ <strong>of</strong> Arts<br />

(Visual Arts)<br />

The Diploma <strong>of</strong> Arts: Visual Arts is <strong>of</strong>fered at the Prahran<br />

campus. The course exposes students to the breadth <strong>of</strong> the<br />

art industry. It aims to develop vocational skills which will<br />

lead to self-employment opportunities within the<br />

art industry; develop and prepare a folio for use when<br />

applying for higher education degree art courses; prepare<br />

students for full-time study; establish an awareness <strong>of</strong> the<br />

role and responsibilities <strong>of</strong> the art worker in society and<br />

develop attitudes <strong>of</strong> adaptability in response to changing<br />

trends and opportunities within the art industry.<br />

Career potential<br />

The course aims to train visual artists who will work with<br />

commercial galleries, artist-run galleries, alternate spaces,<br />

museum exhibitions, community based projects and on<br />

commissions.<br />

Other opportunities for employment may include<br />

interdisciplinary areas such as the performing arts, writing,<br />

radio, film and television.<br />

Admission to the course is conditional on successful<br />

completion <strong>of</strong> VCE. Provision is made for students<br />

returning to education.<br />

All intending students must attend an interview and folio<br />

presentation. In addition to the folio presentation, applicants<br />

will be evaluated on their knowledge <strong>of</strong> contemporary art.<br />

Recognition <strong>of</strong> prior learning<br />

Through the recognition <strong>of</strong> prior learning, participants<br />

will be given credit for modules where they can provide<br />

evidence that they have achieved the learning outcomes.<br />

Learning outcomes include:<br />

The applicant has actually completed the learning<br />

outcome that is being claimed;<br />

The learning outcome is still valid and performable;<br />

The learning has reached the accepted level;<br />

The learning is applicable to the area claimed;<br />

The learning outcome can be applied outside the<br />

specific context in which it was learned;<br />

A sound connection can be made between the learning<br />

outcome and the vocational outcomes.<br />

Further studies pathways<br />

Although the Associate Diploma <strong>of</strong> Arts: Visual Arts is a<br />

vocational course, students may apply for advanced<br />

standing in fine art degree courses at other universities.<br />

Course availability and duration<br />

The course is <strong>of</strong>fered as a two year full-time or approved<br />

equivalent part-time course.<br />

Course structure<br />

The course will focus on fine art theory and practice with<br />

a core curriculum which will support the elective areas <strong>of</strong><br />

study.<br />
