<strong>Swinburne</strong> <strong>of</strong>fers a variety <strong>of</strong> courses and support<br />

programs for migrants from a non-English speaking<br />

background who are:<br />

preparing to enrol in <strong>Swinburne</strong> or other postsecondary<br />

courses<br />

currently enrolled in <strong>Swinburne</strong> courses<br />

wanting to develop English language skills to improve<br />

study and work prospects.<br />

Full-time courses<br />

Preparation for further study and work - Prahran campus<br />

and Hawthorn campus.<br />

Part-time, evening and day courses<br />

Preparation for further study and work, and concurrent<br />

support for <strong>Swinburne</strong> students.<br />

January summer school<br />

English for Academic Purposes (full-time program) -<br />

Hawthorn campus.<br />

Individual language support<br />

Students enrolled in a mainstream course at <strong>Swinburne</strong> can<br />

get help with English and study skills on a one-to-one basis.<br />

Language support within mainstream courses<br />

At both campuses, when circumstances allow, English as<br />

a second language (ESL) trained teachers and extra<br />

tuition time are provided for ESL students enrolled in<br />

VCE, advanced certificate and associate diploma courses.<br />

Independent learning<br />

At both campuses students have access to materials<br />

for independent study (self-access) for language<br />

development purposes; audio, computer-based and textbased<br />

materials are provided.<br />

A fully computerized language laboratory on the Prahran<br />

campus provides students with on-screen programs for<br />

useduring language courses.<br />

Inservice, Short Courses and<br />

Bridging Programs<br />

The Child Care Studies, Family and Community Studies<br />

and General and Community Studies departments <strong>of</strong>fer a<br />

broad range <strong>of</strong> inservices and pr<strong>of</strong>essional development<br />

programs for people working in the social and community<br />

services field. They also <strong>of</strong>fer a range <strong>of</strong> introductory<br />

programs and short courses which are available to the<br />

general public.<br />

English Language Centre<br />

The English Language Centre runs English Language<br />

Intensive Courses for Overseas Students (ELICOS).<br />

Duration: courses are <strong>of</strong>fered over forty, thirty, twenty,<br />

ten or five weeks.<br />

Levels: General English, Academic English, Pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />

English, English for Arts, English for Business, English for<br />

Computer Studies, English for Science/Engineering.<br />

Study tours and customised courses for industry clients can<br />

be arranged.<br />

Courses are conducted on both the Hawthorn and Prahran<br />

campuses.<br />

Workplace Skills Unit<br />

The Workplace Skills Unit designs, researches and delivers<br />

training programs to industry, integrated with accredited<br />

and general workplace skills training. Its team <strong>of</strong> specialist<br />

consultants <strong>of</strong>fers programs customised to company needs:<br />

flexible modes <strong>of</strong> training delivery including computer<br />

assisted learning;<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essional development programs in workplace<br />

delivery;<br />

integrated language, literacy and numeracy.<br />

Interactive Multimedia<br />

The Workplace Skills Unit consultants design and develop<br />

multimedia titles. Computer assisted learning materials are<br />

developed by a multidisciplinary team.<br />
