Radio<br />

Course aims<br />

The course aims to provide specific instruction in all<br />

aspects of radio broadcasting, with hands-on experience in<br />

announcing and news presentation. Other areas of tuition<br />

include voice training, production, copywriting, news<br />

writing and presentation, sales and promotions, music and<br />

programming, radio station management and computing<br />

skills.<br />

Broader issues are introduced, including broadcasting<br />

ethics and codes of practice, media law and ownership, the<br />

impact of information technologies and audience research.<br />

Training is conducted in <strong>Swinburne</strong>'s modern, fully<br />

equipped radio centre, with personal access time available<br />

p to all course participants.<br />

An industry placement program will place students into<br />

commercial radio stations for several weeks during the<br />

g. course. This placement program is designed to allow<br />

participants to experience at first hand the environment<br />

and operating style of commercial radio, gain feedback on<br />

their skills and make personal contacts within the industry.<br />

Guest lecturers from the radio industry reinforce<br />

2 information presented in all areas. Regular radio<br />

broadcasting from <strong>Swinburne</strong>'s studios develops skills in<br />

8 programming, writing, production and presentation.<br />

Participants in the course will have access to other courses<br />

run in Media Studies at <strong>Swinburne</strong>, including media<br />

2 criticism and public policy.<br />

Course structure<br />

Successful completion of the Certificate in Commercial<br />

Radio requires students to pass the following eight<br />

subjects:<br />

Radio Management<br />

Radio Presentation 1<br />

Radio Presentation 2<br />

Radio Journalism 1<br />

Radio Journalism 2<br />

Advertising Copywriting<br />

Radio Advertising Production<br />

NO62 Associate Degree in Social<br />

Science<br />

The Associate Degree in Social Science will not be offered<br />

in <strong>1997</strong>. It is offered only to continuing students.<br />

Students who are interested in the course should make<br />

enquiries about the Diploma of Administration and<br />

Services (General Studies) which is a similar course offered<br />

in the TAFE Division of the University.<br />

Graduating students will be prepared for a number of<br />

occu~ations within a ranee - of administrative and service<br />

employment positions, in a variety of employment<br />

contexts.<br />

The Associate Degree generally involves two years of fulltime<br />

study. Part-time study may be arranged. To qualify<br />

for the award of the Associate Degree students are required<br />

to complete the program of study as outlined.<br />

Course aims<br />

The course is designed to give students the necessary<br />

background, knowledge and skills to allow them to<br />

perform in a range of administrative and service<br />

employment contexts. The course will develop the<br />

students' ability to:<br />

collect and organise information<br />

analyse and interpret social and statistical data<br />

conceptualise and analyse problems and issues<br />

communicate in oral and written forms<br />

use appropriate information technology<br />

work and manage effectively in an organisation<br />

work as part of a team<br />

deal appropriately with members of the public.<br />

The course provides students with a working knowledge of<br />

major social processes (e.g. Australian political and legal<br />

systems, social structures, patterns of social inequality) and<br />

organisational dynamics. The course is particularly<br />

appropriate for people who are employed or seeking<br />

employment in:<br />

administrative jobs in either public or private sectors<br />

service delivery to the public (especially through<br />

government bodies but also in quasi-government and<br />

private organisations which deal with the public)<br />

public relations, information provision or media<br />

liaison<br />

jobs which require research skills and carry<br />

responsibility for contributing to the processes of<br />

policy development, implementation, monitoring and<br />

evaluation.<br />

The Associate Degree provides basic skills in the areas<br />

listed above but its structure anticipates the fact that these<br />

areas extend into high levels of professional competence<br />

which cannot be covered by associate degree level<br />

education.<br />

Articulation arrangements<br />

Students who complete the Associate Degree in Social<br />

Science will be eligible to apply for entry into <strong>Swinburne</strong>'s<br />

Bachelor of Arts degree @A) but will not automatically be<br />

selected. Those who are selected will be eligible for credit<br />

transfer of up to one and a half years of the BA degree,<br />

depending on the subjects taken as pan of the degree and<br />

the BA majors taken.
