fails fifty per cent or more of the enrolled workload;<br />

a Bachelor of Business student fails a subject for the<br />

third time, or a Bachelor of Arts student fails a subject<br />

for a second time; or<br />

the student fails to meet the conditions previously<br />

imposed by the Progress Review Committee.<br />

The grades N, NA, NWD and PX will count as a fail for<br />

the purpose of this section.<br />

Show cause applications -.<br />

Students whose progress is considered unsatisfactory will<br />

be advised in writing of their status within one week of<br />

results being released, and advised that a recommendation<br />

has been made to the Divisional Board that they should be<br />

excluded from the course in which they are enrolled. Such<br />

students are entitled to make a show cause application to<br />

3 the Student Progress Review Committee stating why they<br />

should not be excluded. No student will be excluded from<br />

c the course without first being given the opportunity to<br />

3 show cause to the Student Progress Review Committee.<br />

w Failure to make contact with the Committee will result in<br />

Student Progress Review Committee<br />

L" Composition<br />

There will be one committee for the Bachelor of Arts and<br />

o_ one committee for the Bachelor of Business, Bachelor of<br />

$ Arts/Bachelor of Business, Bachelor of Information<br />

Systems and Bachelor of Information Technology made up<br />

of academic staff teaching in the relevant course or courses.<br />

Chair and at least three members, all from academic<br />

staff teaching in the relevant courses. The Chairs are<br />

nominated by the Divisional Board and members are<br />

nominated by Heads of School.<br />

The Division's International Student Liaison Officer<br />

for cases of show cause involving international<br />

students.<br />

The relevant Course Administrator (Secretary).<br />

Where requested by the student, the President of the<br />

Student Union or nominee may be present at the<br />

Committee for the consideration of that case only.<br />

Procedure<br />

Upon receipt of a show cause application from a student,<br />

the Chair and Secretary of the Student Progress Review<br />

Committee, on behalf of the Committee, will review the case<br />

and decide whether it will be necessary to interview the<br />

student.<br />

Students will be advised whether their show cause<br />

application has been accepted without interview or<br />

whether an interview with the Student Progress Review<br />

Committee is required.<br />

Additional information from appropriate academic staff about<br />

the student's academic work may be sought by the Student<br />

Progress Review Committee before a decision is made.<br />

Powers<br />

The Student Progress Review Committee may, when<br />

considering a show cause application:<br />

accept the student's show cause application and allow<br />

the student to re-enrol without condition;<br />

accept the student's show cause application but lace<br />

conditions upon the student's enrolment in the<br />

following semester;<br />

in the case of a Bachelor of Arts student who fails a<br />

subject for the second time, the Committee may<br />

require the student to select another major course of<br />

study;<br />

require the student to take a leave of absence for a<br />

specified period; or<br />

exclude the student from the course for a minimum of<br />

two academic years.<br />

Enrolment conditions<br />

The academic record of students placed on condition will be<br />

reviewed by the Student Progress Review Committee at the<br />

end of the following semester and a decision made to:<br />

permit the student to continue studying without<br />

further condition; or<br />

impose a further condition on the student for an<br />

additional semester; or<br />

require the student to show cause why they should not<br />

be excluded from the course for a minimum of two<br />

academic years (four semesters excluding summer<br />

semsters).<br />

Appeals against decisions of the Student Progress<br />

Review Committee<br />

These regulations are contained in the University<br />

Procedures Relating to Student Assessment and Appeals.<br />

Period of exclusion<br />

Students who are excluded from the course will not be<br />

permitted to re-enrol for a minimum period of two academic<br />

years (four semesters excluding summer semesters), unless the<br />

student was excluded from the Bachelor of Business after<br />

failing a subject for the third time.<br />

Bachelor of Business students excluded after failing a<br />

subject for the third time will be permitted to re-enrol once<br />

a subject equivalent to the subject failed for the third time<br />

has been successfully completed at another higher<br />

education institution and the student has provided proof of<br />

passing the equivalent of that subject.<br />

Should a Bachelor of Business student choose another<br />

major area of study for which the subject that has been<br />

failed for a third time is not mandatory the student is not<br />

requires to repeat the failed subject at another higher<br />

education institution.
