Content<br />

Control mechanisms operating in living organisms. Steroid<br />

and trophic hormone effects. Their target tissues and<br />

activities at the enzyme and nucleic acid levels. Also includes<br />

amplification of signals through receptors, types of receptors<br />

and synthetic analogues modifying the signals. Abnormal<br />

hormone patterns and their relationship to disease processes.<br />

The role of chemical analysis in the treatment and diagnosis<br />

of disease.<br />

Clinical biochemistry.<br />

Organisation of clinical laboratories automation and quality<br />

control.<br />

Computers in the clinical laboratory.<br />

SC507 Chemical Engineering Management<br />

10 credit points 4 hours per week Hawthorn<br />

Instruction: lectures, tutorials Assessment: examination<br />

To introduce and develop (or further develop) an<br />

understanding of the role of management with respect to<br />

innovation and enterprise, project management, engineering<br />

finance and accounting, industrial relations, engineering law,<br />

leadership and human resource management in the context<br />

of chemical engineering projects and industry.<br />

Content<br />

Topics will encourage students to develop and demonstrate<br />

an understanding of the responsibilities and processes<br />

associated with effective management in chemical<br />

engineering industries.<br />

the role of innovation and enterprise;<br />

role of research and development;<br />

project management, project initiation, organisation,<br />

evaluation and review;<br />

finance and accounting processes, balance sheets, capital<br />

investment issues, sources of finance;<br />

principles of human resource management, the role of<br />

leadership, industrial relations, resolution of conflict;<br />

legal environment with respect to engineering<br />

operations, legal obligations, contracts, property,<br />

professional liability.<br />

A six-month period of employment experience occurring as<br />

part of the third year of the course leading to the degree of<br />

Bachelor of Applied Science Biochemistry/Chemistry and<br />

Chemistry. Students are supervised by a member of the<br />

academic staff and are required to submit a report to their<br />

employer and to their supervisor.<br />
