- The role of the Executive is to manage the business and<br />

affairs of the Union. The meetings of the Executive occur<br />

at least once a month from February to November and are<br />

:. open to all students.<br />

The affairs of the Union fall principally into the following<br />

areas: education and welfare services, social activities, and<br />

media. These areas are governed by management<br />

committees, whose responsibility it is to develop policies<br />

of the Union in the areas of their activity. The<br />

management committees consist of: the relevant executive<br />

as chairperson, two to three students from the Union<br />

Executive, two to four students elected from the student<br />

body. At monthly meetings the Executive receive and<br />

consider policy submitted by the management committees.<br />

In March or April of each year the Executive calls an Annual<br />

General ~ eet&~ to presen; the preceding year's audited<br />

financial statement. In October or November of each year the<br />

Executive convenes a budget meeting. At this meeting the<br />

proposed budget for the next financial year is presented by the<br />

Executive to the student body for their approval. Further, the<br />

Executive reports on the activities of the Union for the period<br />

since the preceding budget meeting.<br />

Student Union Support Services<br />

The Student Union offers a wide range of support services<br />

which all aim to improve the quality of the educational<br />

experience of students and to foster a <strong>Swinburne</strong><br />

community spirit. All services are funded partially or fully<br />

by the General Service Fee which students pay on<br />

enrolment. All services strive to meet the demands of<br />

students as a group, without losing sight of the individual<br />

student, and ensuring high standards are met.<br />

The office is situated on the fourth level of the Union<br />

Building. Union personel located on this level include the<br />

president, administrative officer, manager, accountant and<br />

executive.<br />

Various services are ~rovided here including " room<br />

bookings, Legal Adviser bookings, insurance claims,<br />

facsimile and general information. Also, Youth Hostel<br />

Australia Travel Discount cards (YHA) and International<br />

Student Identity cards (ISIC). Both give students great<br />

discounts and cheap accommodation and travel packages.<br />

The Australian Buying Advisory Service (ABAS) is<br />

available at no charge to students. This service guarantees<br />

that the price you have been quoted is in fact an<br />

unbeatable offer.<br />

Other services offered:<br />

Book Vouchers<br />

Needy students can apply for book vouchers, which are<br />

jointly funded by the Student Union, Bookshop and<br />

Chancellery. They are available from the University's<br />

Housing, Part-time Employment and Finance Department.<br />

Ethel Hall<br />

Clubs and Societies can use the hall for their functions.<br />

Bookings must be made at least two weeks in advance.<br />

Emergency Loans<br />

The Student Union provides funding for short term<br />

emergency loans for students. Loans are allocated by the<br />

University's Housing, Part-time Employment and Finance<br />

Department. Repayments are made to the Student Union<br />

Administration Officer.<br />

Legal Adviser<br />

The Student Union provides a free legal service for fulland<br />

part-time students. The solicitor is available at the<br />

Hawthorn campus every Tuesday during the academic<br />

year. Appointments must be made at the Union Office, on<br />

9214 5440.<br />

Personal Accident Insurance Scheme<br />

All students enrolled in <strong>Swinburne</strong> are automatically<br />

covered by personal accident insurance. This insurance<br />

scheme covers accidents, twenty-four hours a day on or off<br />

campus in the event that it relates to activity associated<br />

with <strong>Swinburne</strong>. For further details, please contact the<br />

Accountant in the Union Office.<br />

Tax Return Advice<br />

The Union has arranged for a tax consultant to answer<br />

student enquiries regarding preparation of their income tax<br />

returns. These one-on-one sessions are conducted in<br />

August, the dates being advertised in The Swine.<br />

Appointments must be made through the Union<br />

administration officer.<br />

Student Union Computer Centre<br />

The Computer Centre offers access to a number of MS<br />

Windows PC workstations at both Hawthorn and<br />

Prahran. Popular word processing, spreadsheet and DTP<br />

packages are available.<br />

Laser Printing<br />

Users of the Computer Centre workstations have access to<br />

networked laser printers at low per page rates.<br />

Resume Typing<br />

The Computer Centre offers a professional resumk service<br />

to word process, print and bind resumes for students at<br />

reasonable cost.<br />

Binding Service<br />

A thermal glue binding service is available at Hawthorn<br />

and Lilydale at a reasonable cost. The covers are A4 with a<br />

clear acetate cover.
