Obiedive<br />

To introduce the basis of engineering design and the<br />

fundamentals of engineering statics and strength of<br />

materials.<br />

Content<br />

Introduction to engineering; historical perspective,<br />

engineering systems, engineering method, modelling of<br />

systems.<br />

The design process; specification, modelling, analysis,<br />

synthesis, prototype, roof testing, ~erformance, economy,<br />

environmental impact.<br />

Function and form of structural svstems. Loads on<br />

structures, load paths. Forces, moment of a force,<br />

concurrent and coplanar force systems, resultant and<br />

equilibrant forces. Reactions; free body diagrams. Concepts<br />

of equilibrium; general equations of equilibrium,<br />

equilibrium equations for a two dimensional system.<br />

Development of internal actions to maintain equilibrium;<br />

axial force, shear force, bending moment and torsion.<br />

Applications to static systems to find reactions and internal<br />

actions.<br />

Normal and tangential stress and strain, (definition).<br />

Relationship between stress and strain; elastic moduli,<br />

deformation. Axial stress/strain, direct shear stress and<br />

strain, bearing stress. Poisson's ratio. Yield stress, ultimate<br />

stress, proportional limit. Concept of allowable stress.<br />

Applications .. to simple (single bolt) connections and fillet<br />

welds.<br />

Beam Behaviour; statically determinate beams and bents.<br />

Shear force and bending moment diagrams. Stresses due to<br />

Bending. Deflection of beams (formulae only).<br />

Column Behaviour; short column - long column concept;<br />

buckling as a phenomenon. Combined stresses, short<br />

column only.<br />

building surveyor as manager;<br />

authorities and private enterprise;<br />

basic principles of the regulations. General knowledge<br />

of related Acts, regulations, codes and standards;<br />

plan checking of domestic type applications for building<br />
