AY612 Second Supervised Pradicum -<br />

Internship B<br />

60 work days Hawthorn Duration two semesters<br />

Prerequisite: AY517 Assessment: students will be evaluated<br />

by the supervisor() most directly associated with their work<br />

together with the coordinator. Pe$ormaan will be reviewed<br />

mid-way through the internship and an evaluation made at<br />

the ad.<br />

A subject in the Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology<br />

Objectives and Content<br />

This second practicum is intended to broaden and<br />

consolidate students' previous learning in the program and<br />

to ~rovide students with the opportunity to act as a<br />

responsible professional within a counselling setting. The 60<br />

work days include 120 hours of client contact.<br />

Students will be allocated to an internship in one or two<br />

settings over the year. Allocation to an internship setting<br />

will be guided both by the student's professional interests<br />

and the objective of extending his or her existing skills.<br />

Students will take on counselling clients and participate as<br />

fully as possible in the professional activities of the<br />

internship setting. The School of Social and Behavioural<br />

Science has links with numerous practice settings in which<br />

experienced psychologists work, including organisations<br />

such as the Vietnam Veterans Counselling Service, the<br />

Banking Staff Counselling Staff Service; University and<br />

TAFE counselling units; Moreland Hall Drug and Alcohol<br />

Service; Doncare Community Counselling Services; and<br />

Relationships Australia.<br />

Students will be required to have presented written and/or<br />

verbal case reports about their clients to other professionals.<br />

Where appropriate, students are encouraged to participate in<br />

an Assessment or review of some aspect of service delivery<br />

or administration of the internship setting.<br />

AY613 Counselling Psychology: A Psychology<br />

of Work and Health<br />

3 hours per week Hawthorn Prerequisite: nil<br />

Assessment: applied project 5O%, class test 50%<br />

5 This course is designed to develop an understanding of<br />

counselling practice related to health, well-being and<br />

a behaviour with particular reference to the person/<br />

organisation interface and workplace settings.<br />

career choice, development and change;<br />

vocational guidance and career counselling;<br />

personnel selection, induction, training, socialisation<br />

and appraisal;<br />

resolution;<br />

health psychology ;<br />

the biopsychosocial perspective of health and wellness;<br />

stress, illness and psychological health; stress and its<br />

management;<br />

lifestyle effects on health and wellbeing;<br />

personal, work related and community related health<br />

problems;<br />

occupational health and safety;<br />

ergonomics and persodmachine interaction;<br />

future developments.<br />

Objectives and Content<br />

The aim of the subject is to consolidate the knowledge and<br />

skills gained by students during their supervised practica in<br />

order to assist the transfer of this knowledge and skill to<br />

psychological practice after graduation.<br />

A series of topics will be covered in seminar format. They<br />

will cover areas such as:<br />

assessment and containment of risk;<br />

managing therapeutic impasses and dealing with client<br />

resistance;<br />

termination and relapse prevention;<br />

working in multidisciplinary teams - appreciating other<br />

professions;<br />

supervising and being supervised;<br />

consultation skills;<br />

ongoing professional development;<br />

communication and public relations;<br />

psychology and contemporary social issues;<br />

intercultural and minority group issues.<br />
