Assessment: students will be evaluated by the supervisor()<br />

most directly associated with their work together with the<br />

coordinator. Performance will be reviewed mid-way through<br />

the internship and an evaluation made at the end.<br />

A subject in the Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology<br />

Obiedves and Content<br />

This first practicum is concerned primarily with helping<br />

students to make the transition from the counselling -<br />

laboratory to the counselling practice setting. Initially, new<br />

students will be allocated clients at the <strong>Swinburne</strong> Centre<br />

for Psychological Services. In addition, students will<br />

participate in the administration of the Centre and in<br />

dealing with telephone enquiries to the Centre.<br />

Students will be allocated clients in accordance with their<br />

existing levels of counselling skills, their professional skills,<br />

their professional interests. A normal case load will be four<br />

clients per week. Students will be expected to see a mixture<br />

of child, adolescent and adult clients and to gather<br />

experience in working with groups and families as well as<br />

individuals. A supervisor will be appointed and will meet<br />

weekly with the student for supervision. The supervisor will<br />

be an Associate of the Centre.<br />

Students will meet once a month in a small group<br />

supervision session to discuss their clients. Each student will<br />

be required to present a report on a case for discussion by<br />

the group. In addition, each student will write a<br />

comprehensive case summary after termination with each<br />

client.<br />

The 60 work days include 120 hours of client contact.<br />

AY610 Professional and Ethical Issues<br />

Objectives and Content<br />

This course is designed to ensure that students understand<br />

the ethical and legal responsibilities of psychologists<br />

working in the human services. Through study of the ethical<br />

standards of the ~rofession, and legal issues related to the<br />

practice of psychology, students will learn about the process<br />

of ethical and professional decision making.<br />

Topics covered will include the regulation of psychological<br />

practice through professional associations and registration<br />

boards, the influence of values on ethical practice,<br />

limitations on confidentiality, who is the client, report<br />

writing, dual role relationships, psychology and the law.<br />

Objectives and Content<br />

The subject is designed to:<br />

examine contemporary theory concerning the role and<br />

function of the Australian familv and its interaction<br />

with the wider society;<br />

introduce students to theory and practice of systems<br />

approaches to family therapy;<br />

Topics include:<br />

introduction to the study of the family. Definitions of<br />

family, variations in Australian family structures;<br />

family formation, functions;<br />

the family life-cycle;<br />

family therapy and the major schools: structural,<br />

strategic, systemic;<br />

contributions of significant family therapists;<br />

generational and cross-cultural issues in family therapy.<br />

Measurement of farnilv interactions;<br />

experiential exercises will be conducted to demonstrate<br />

intervention strategies with couples and families.<br />
