Objectives and Content<br />

This subiect continues to develo~ skills in written and<br />

spoken Vietnamese. The focus is on communicative active<br />

oral and written skills for a wide range of contexts. An<br />

outline of the development of modern Vietnamese literary<br />

tradition will be given. Topics covered will include areas of<br />

the arts, literature and history. Time will be devoted to the<br />

discussion of the social background to the emereence of the<br />

romanised system of writing, its role as a vehicle for social<br />

change, the influence of the Western tradition of thought<br />

and the role of the Tu Luc Van Doan group of writers.<br />

Assessment: practical exercises (including participation as a<br />

Objectives and Content<br />

AYlOO and AYlOl are designed to introduce students to the<br />

content and method of psychology. Topics introduced in<br />

AYlOO include psychology as a science, ethics in research,<br />

biological foundations of behaviour, sensation, perception<br />

and consciousness, emotion, learning and experimental<br />

design and analysis.<br />

Recommended reading<br />

Students wishing to familiarise themselves with concepts in<br />

psychology could read any recent introductory psychology text<br />

available from most regional libraries.<br />

AY101 Psychology 101<br />

4 hours per week Hawthorn<br />

Prerequisite: AYlOO Assessment : essay, a practical report<br />

(including participation as a subject in research) and an<br />

examination<br />

A subject in the Bachelor of Arts and the Bachelor of<br />

Applied Science<br />

Objectives and Content<br />

This subject concentrates on various aspects of cognition<br />

such as memory, information processing, intelligence and<br />

problem solving. Other topics covered include motivation,<br />

genetics, personality, sexuality, stress and coping and<br />

psychopathology. The design and analysis of experimental<br />

studies forms a major part of the teaching program.<br />

Applied Science<br />

Obiectives and Content<br />

This subject examines major theories of cognitive<br />

functioning and the mechanisms and processes involved in<br />

memory, attention and human performance. It will provide<br />

a basis for the understanding of skill acquisition and examine<br />

the effects of motivation, overload and arousal levels on<br />

performance. After a general introduction to theory,<br />

contemporary issues are considered, including decisionmaking,<br />

perceptual-motor performance and clinical and<br />

organisational applications.<br />
