This subject concentrates on development of suitable<br />

written and spoken language for interaction in business<br />

spheres. Emphasis is placed on writing of business letters<br />

and other documents and reading of business-related texts.<br />

Thorough training in honorifics is also emphasised. Japanese<br />

businessmen participate as guest speakers and consultants to<br />

the course.<br />

The double degree Business/Arts students are strongly<br />

recommended to enrol in this subject.<br />

Objectives<br />

Students will be introduced to contemporary issues which<br />

exist in Japanese Society.<br />

Content<br />

This subject provides an introduction to contemporary<br />

issues in Japanese society. Topics include family problems,<br />

old age and social security, crime, suicide, gangster<br />

organisations, illegal immigrants, overseas students and<br />

female inequality. The program is based mainly on<br />

newspaper items but some media broadcasts are included<br />

and specialist lecturers lead seminars on certain topics.<br />

discussion in Japanese of a variety of social issues relevant to<br />

contemporary Japanese society.<br />
