Objectives and Content<br />

Examines the theories of organisational behaviour. Considers<br />

the ways in which groups and individuals interact with each<br />

other and the impact of organisational structures on the<br />

functioning of organisations. Particular emphasis is given to the<br />

analysis of organisational culture and how such phenomena<br />

affect behaviour in the workplace.<br />

AD201 Culture and Ideas<br />

A subject in the Associate Degree in Social Science<br />

Objectives and Content<br />

Examines theories of culture and the notions of cultural<br />

transmission, continuity and discontinuity and change in<br />

society. Includes case studies of cultural contexts, meaning<br />

systems, representations in film and text and the social<br />

sources and impact of cultural symbolism. The role of ideas<br />

and systems of meaning in Australian society is highlighted.<br />

AD202 Data Usage and Interpretation<br />

Objectives and Content<br />

This subject helps the student understand a range of forms<br />

of data and ways of organising both qualitative and<br />

quantitative data. It helps students comprehend basic<br />

methods of analysis of these data as well as how to interpret<br />

data for particular purposes in a variety of employment<br />

contexts.<br />

AD203 Economic Decision-making in the<br />

Enterprise<br />

3 hoursper week Hawthorn Prerequisite: first year Associate<br />

A subject in the Associate Degree in Social Science<br />

Objectives and Content<br />

Develops an understanding of the role of the enterprise in a<br />

modified market economy. The emphasis is on concepts<br />

relevant to microeconomics but the importance of the<br />

macroeconomic context in which decisions are made will be<br />

stressed. The student should develop skills of analysis and<br />

synthesis based on an understanding of economic concepts.<br />

The aim will be to ensure that there is an appreciation of the<br />

complexity and the interrelationship between economic<br />

factors and their importance in making economic decisions<br />

within business organisations.<br />

AD204 Equity and Opportunity in Australian<br />

Society<br />

3 hours per week Hawthorn Pyerequisite:first year Associate<br />

Degree in Social Sciace Assessment: continuous<br />

A subject in the Associate Degree in Social Science<br />

Objectives and Content<br />

Examines the ideas which underpin concepts of equity and<br />

opportunity and explores how these ideas and concepts are<br />

made evident in Australian society, in organisational structures<br />

and in related contexts. Evaluation of these concepts and the<br />

critical analysis of their applicability in particular work<br />

structures is investigated.<br />

AD205 Health and Illness<br />

3 hours per week Hawthorn Prerequisite:first year Associate<br />

Degree in Social Sciace Assessment continuous<br />

A subject in the Associate Degree in Social Science<br />

Objectives and Content<br />

Examines the area of occupational health and safety both in<br />

its social and legislative contexts and in its organisational<br />

context. Investigates the impact of illness in the workplace<br />

and the broad legal and social issues of health and illness in<br />

the society and the workplace, e.g. prevention,<br />

rehabilitation, improved work practices, retraining, access to<br />

medical care.<br />

AD206 Industrial Relations<br />

3 hours per week Hawthorn Prerequisite:first year Associate<br />

Degree in Social Science Assessment: continuous<br />

A subject in the Associate Degree in Social Science<br />

Objectives and Content<br />

Investigates the forces for cooperation and conflict as they<br />

impact on the industrial relations arena in complex<br />

technological societies. Explores the roles and boundaries of<br />

government involvement and the legal dimensions of<br />

industrial relations as they affect the roles of employers and<br />

unions in a changing environment. Case studies of the<br />

interaction between these often competing groups are<br />

examined.<br />

AD207 Information Systems, Society and<br />

Technology<br />

A subject in the Associate Degree in Social Science<br />

Objectives and Content<br />

Explores the theoretical perspectives which influence<br />

understanding about the evolution of information<br />

technology and its place in different economic contexts.<br />

Investigates the design and use of information systems and<br />

develo~s the skills of needs analvsis to arrive at decisions<br />

governing the selection and implementation of appropriate<br />

technological solutions adapted to the needs of the<br />

workplace.<br />
