Student computing at Lilydale<br />

For all students of <strong>Swinburne</strong> at Lilydale a computer is<br />

considered to be an essential learning tool, irrespective of<br />

the nature of each student's course enrolment. To this end<br />

all first year students will be required to take a core subject<br />

in information technology. Adequate access to computer<br />

laboratory facilities is provided on campus.<br />

All students are strongly encouraged to consider obtaining<br />

their own notebook or desktop PC computer with the<br />

appropriate modem. Students contemplating the purchase of<br />

their -- ~<br />

own comDuter and modem should ensure that their<br />

retailer guarantees compliance with the technical<br />

specifications for student computing at <strong>Swinburne</strong> at<br />

Lilydale. Copies of the technical specification and<br />

information about sources of finance are available from the<br />

. Senior --- - - Administrative Officer on 9215 7102. Students are<br />

invited to contact the University's Computer Services and<br />

Information Technology group on 9214 8574 for further<br />

advice.<br />

Students who already have their own computer can<br />

continue to use their current machines, but, it is likely that<br />

some limitations with off campus computing will occur. The<br />

University will not be able to provide technical advice for<br />

computers and modems that do not comply with the<br />

technical specification for student computing at <strong>Swinburne</strong><br />

$ at Lilydale.<br />

Swinbrne at Lilydale is a new division of the University<br />

which formally commenced operation in 1996.<br />

Core Subjects<br />

All students enrolled in one of the three programs offered<br />

q by the Division - Business, Applied Science,<br />

r - Social Science - will be required to study a set of core<br />

-C p. subjects: Information Technology; Science, Technology and<br />

$ Society; Learning and Communication Behaviour; and<br />

Statistics and Research Methods. These subjects are to be<br />

taken in first year and are offered on the basis of two<br />

subjects per semester. Students are strongly advised to<br />

carefullv consider their choice of maiorfs) , and to ensure that<br />

the balance of their first year enrolment is selected with a<br />

view to meeting the requirements of these majors.<br />

Student Workload<br />

Standard Enrolment Load<br />

All full-time students are expected to enrol in, and remain<br />

enrolled in, four subjects per semester.<br />

All part-time students are expected to enrol in, and remain<br />

enrolled in, two subjects per semester.<br />

Variations to the standard enrolment load will only be<br />

permitted in exceptional circumstances, and will normally<br />

be varied for one semester only.<br />

Overload<br />

Students may be ~ermitted to enrol in one additional subject<br />

over the normal semester load if they have passed all<br />

enrolled subjects in the previous semester and it is the<br />

student's last year of study. Applications must be made in<br />

writing " to the Senior Administrator before the scheduled reenrolment<br />

period.<br />

Change of enrolment status<br />

Students wishing to change their enrolment status from fulltime<br />

to part-time may do so at the end of any semester.<br />

Change of status from part-time to full-time may be<br />

permitted at the end of each year at the time of re-enrolment<br />

into the following year. Part-time students will only be<br />

considered for a change of enrolment status once they have<br />

completed one year of part-time study. Applications for<br />

change of enrolment status should be made to the Course<br />

Administrator.<br />

Progress Requirements<br />

Completion of first year of undergraduate program<br />

Full-time students are not generally permitted to enrol for<br />

second or third year subjects unless they have completed or<br />

are concurrently completing all outstanding core subjects<br />

(LC1100 - Information Technology; LCTlOO - Science,<br />

Technology and Society; LCLlOO - Learning and<br />

Communication Behaviour; and LCRlOO - Statistics and<br />

Research Methods). Where a student is enrolled for both<br />

first and second year subjects and wishes to withdraw from a<br />

subject, enrolment in first year subjects must be maintained.<br />

Part-time students may be permitted to complete a major<br />

sequence of study prior to completing other subjects<br />

(excepting LCLlOO - Learning and Communication<br />

Behaviour) providing permission is granted from the Course<br />

Administrator. Students wishing to do this must apply in<br />

writing stating their reasons prior to the commencement of<br />

each academic year.<br />

Time limit for completion of degree<br />

Full-time undergraduate students must complete their degree<br />

program within six years of their first enrolment in the<br />

course (excluding any periods of leave of absence). Part-time<br />

students must complete their degree program within nine<br />

years of their first enrolment in the course (excluding and<br />

periods of leave of absence).<br />

Leave of absence<br />

Students who have enrolled in a course and wish to take<br />

leave of absence with a view to re-enrolling at the end of a<br />

specified period should apply on a Leave of Absence form<br />

and lodge it with the administrative officer of the<br />

appropriate division.<br />

Leave of Absence will be considered within the guidelines of<br />

the Leave of Absence procedures outlined in the <strong>Higher</strong><br />

<strong>Education</strong> Policies and Procedures handbook.<br />

Students who have been granted Leave of Absence will be<br />

notified in writing by the Senior Administrative Officer.<br />

Enrolment in all subjects during the period of the leave of<br />

absence will be cancelled automatically. Students granted
