Concurrent Study<br />

Duration<br />

This course is offered as an adjunct to<br />

mainstream studies <strong>and</strong> equal to the duration of<br />

any mainstream <strong>TAFE</strong> course. Available each<br />

weekday throughout the academic year.<br />

Location<br />

Croydon, Hawthorn, Lilydale, Prahran, Wantirna.<br />

Entry requirements<br />

Permanent residents enrolled in a <strong>TAFE</strong> diploma<br />

(<strong>and</strong> most certificate courses) are eligible for<br />

study skills, language, literacy <strong>and</strong> mathematics<br />

assistance. Higher Education (degree) students<br />

are also eligible for academic <strong>and</strong> language skills<br />

support.<br />

Application procedure<br />

After enrolling in a mainstream <strong>TAFE</strong> or Degree<br />

course at <strong>Swinburne</strong> students can apply for study<br />

support by enrolling in a module of Concurrent<br />

Study. Applications should be made to the person<br />

in charge of Study Support at each campus.<br />

Applications are accepted throughout the year.<br />

There is no charge for concurrent assistance.<br />

<strong>Course</strong> overview<br />

The aim of this course is to support students so<br />

they can pursue their mainstream courses with<br />

confidence. Tuition is available to students who<br />

want to:<br />

• read <strong>and</strong> take notes more efficiently.<br />

• become more competent in mathematics.<br />

• know how to identify the key elements of<br />

work requirements.<br />

• plan <strong>and</strong> prepare their written <strong>and</strong> oral<br />

presentations effectively.<br />

• manage their study effectively.<br />

• set realistic study goals.<br />

• work well with their peers <strong>and</strong> in groups.<br />

• learn how to use a wide variety of resources.<br />

Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE)<br />

Duration<br />

One year full-time or equivalent part-time.<br />

Location<br />

Prahran.<br />

Entry requirements<br />

Students may go direct into Units 3 <strong>and</strong> 4 (Year<br />

12) without attempting Units 1 <strong>and</strong> 2 (Year 11).<br />

However, preparatory subjects are available if<br />

required. Students who have undertaken the VCE<br />

previously may supplement their score or add<br />

extra subjects at Unit 3 <strong>and</strong> 4 level. Others may<br />

choose subjects to meet their stage <strong>and</strong> needs.<br />

The Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) is<br />

prerequisite for most higher education degree<br />

courses <strong>and</strong> a number of <strong>TAFE</strong> courses.<br />

Two years full-time.<br />

Entry requirements<br />

People who have special learning needs with a<br />

focus on intellectual <strong>and</strong>/or learning disability,<br />

who have the potential for open employment<br />

<strong>and</strong>/or further training, are unable to gain access<br />

to other <strong>TAFE</strong> programs at point of entry, <strong>and</strong> are<br />

sixteen years <strong>and</strong> over.<br />

Direct to <strong>Swinburne</strong>.<br />

<strong>Course</strong> overview<br />

The course seeks to enhance the educational <strong>and</strong><br />

career pathways of students. Students choose a<br />

vocational area in which they study for two years<br />

along with core units of study. The core unit areas<br />

are as follows: Personal Effectiveness, Orientation<br />

to Learning, Orientation to Work, Writing Skills to<br />

Work, Job Seeking Skills, Work Team<br />

Communication, Numeracy Level 1, Work<br />

Education <strong>and</strong> Information Technology.<br />
