Certificate in General Education for Adults<br />

Duration<br />

The course can be undertaken on a full-time (16-<br />

20 hours per week) or part-time basis. Intakes<br />

are flexible <strong>and</strong> occur at regular intervals<br />

throughout the year. The number of modules<br />

required to complete the Certificate is dependent<br />

on the individual’s skills at entry.<br />

Entry requirements<br />

People with skills ranging from pre-reading <strong>and</strong><br />

pre-writing to those wishing to improve their<br />

existing basic skills are eligible. Level one will be<br />

offered to adults who have yet to gain<br />

competence as independent readers <strong>and</strong> writers.<br />

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) allows<br />

students to be placed in a level appropriate to<br />

their currents skills.<br />

<strong>Course</strong> overview<br />

This course caters for people from English <strong>and</strong><br />

non-English speaking backgrounds who left<br />

school before Year 11. The main focus of the<br />

program is improving a student’s skill in reading,<br />

writing <strong>and</strong> maths all with a strong emphasis on<br />

improving self-confidence. Students are also<br />

encouraged to undertake some introductory<br />

vocational modules <strong>and</strong> after completion of the<br />

program they will be better prepared for further<br />

study <strong>and</strong>/or employment. Students are required<br />

to complete core modules of English, Maths <strong>and</strong><br />

Computer skills <strong>and</strong> select from a range of<br />

available electives. Subject choice varies<br />

according to campus.<br />

Certificate I in Initial Adult Literacy <strong>and</strong> Numeracy<br />

Duration<br />

Two semesters part-time.<br />

Entry requirements<br />

Applicants must attend an interview, express<br />

personal goals for literacy, <strong>and</strong> demonstrate<br />

readiness in reading, writing <strong>and</strong> maths skills eg.<br />

recognise a small number of sight words <strong>and</strong><br />

numbers <strong>and</strong>/or recognise the sounds <strong>and</strong> names<br />

of a group of letters.<br />

<strong>Course</strong> overview<br />

This course is designed to help students who may<br />

have a limited school experience, intellectual<br />

disability or have to overcome the challenge of a<br />

learning disability, to develop reading, writing,<br />

speaking, listening <strong>and</strong> maths skills. The course<br />

covers four levels of reading <strong>and</strong> writing, three<br />

levels of general communication <strong>and</strong> twenty levels<br />

in the maths area.<br />

Career opportunities<br />

On completion of the course students will be able<br />

to enrol in the Certificate in General Education for<br />

Adults. Students may also wish to explore future<br />

options in the Certificate in Work Education.<br />

Adult Migrant English Program<br />

Duration<br />

One semester (15-20 hours per week) each level,<br />

or one year part-time.<br />

Location<br />

Hawthorn, Prahran, Wantirna.<br />

Entry requirements<br />

Permanent resident, or eligible temporary, who<br />

has arrived in Australia in the last three to five<br />

years. English level from beginner to under<br />

intermediate for all four macro skills: reading,<br />

writing, speaking, <strong>and</strong> listening. Passport is<br />

essential at interview.<br />

<strong>Course</strong> overview<br />

This course is a National Settlement English<br />

Program administered by the Department of<br />

Immigration <strong>and</strong> Multicultural Affairs. Its aim is to<br />

assist newly arrived migrants to develop the<br />

English Language skills necessary to settle<br />

successfully into Australia, to participate in the<br />

community <strong>and</strong> access available services. This<br />

program is has no fees for eligible students.<br />

Further studies in either a higher level of CSWE or<br />
