Preparatory and Further Education Community Options English (CSWE) English (EVEFS) Course title Community Options Program Duration Students may attend part-time or full-time, can enter at any time of the year and can complete the course at any time of the year. Course overview This program provides people with a disability a general education with the opportunity to develop skills required for employment and further education. Students negotiate an individual program plan containing learning objectives with are relevant to their aspirations. Permanent residency (passport required) or if not permanent may be eligible for the Adult Migrant English Program (510 hours). English level: beginners to pre-intermediate. Course overview This course focuses on general language development, oral and written skills related to a range of contexts at beginner level. It also focuses on settlement issues. General Education for Adults Literacy and Numeracy Migrant English Social Sciences Swinburne and Arts at Lilydale – TAFE Course title Certificate in General Education for Adults Duration The course can be undertaken on a full-time (16- 20 hours per week) or part-time basis. Intakes are flexible and occur at regular intervals throughout the year. The number of modules required to complete the Certificate is dependent on the individual’s skills at entry. Location Croydon, Hawthorn, Prahran, Wantirna. Entry requirements People with skills ranging from pre-reading and pre-writing to those wishing to improve their existing basic skills are eligible. Level one will be offered to adults who have yet to gain competence as independent readers and writers. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) allows students to be placed in a level appropriate to their currents skills. Application procedure Direct to Swinburne. Course overview This course caters for people from English and non-English speaking backgrounds who left school before Year 11. The main focus of the program is improving a student’s skill in reading, writing and maths all with a strong emphasis on improving self-confidence. Students are also encouraged to undertake some introductory vocational modules and after completion of the program they will be better prepared for further study and/or employment. Students are required to complete core modules of English, Maths and Computer skills and select from a range of available electives. Subject choice varies according to campus. Course title Certificate I in Initial Adult Literacy and Numeracy Duration Two semesters part-time. Location Croydon, Lilydale. Entry requirements Applicants must attend an interview, express personal goals for literacy, and demonstrate readiness in reading, writing and maths skills eg. recognise a small number of sight words and numbers and/or recognise the sounds and names of a group of letters. Course overview This course is designed to help students who may have a limited school experience, intellectual disability or have to overcome the challenge of a learning disability, to develop reading, writing, speaking, listening and maths skills. The course covers four levels of reading and writing, three levels of general communication and twenty levels in the maths area. Career opportunities On completion of the course students will be able to enrol in the Certificate in General Education for Adults. Students may also wish to explore future options in the Certificate in Work Education. Location Hawthorn, Prahran, Wantirna. Entry requirements Permanent resident, or eligible temporary, who has arrived in Australia in the last three to five years. English level from beginner to under intermediate for all four macro skills: reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Passport is essential at interview. Application procedure Direct to Swinburne. Course overview This course is a National Settlement English Program administered by the Department of Immigration and Multicultural Affairs. Its aim is to assist newly arrived migrants to develop the English Language skills necessary to settle successfully into Australia, to participate in the community and access available services. This program is has no fees for eligible students. Career opportunities Further studies in either a higher level of CSWE or English for Vocational Education and Further Study.
