The course is aimed at mature age students<br />

(twenty-three years plus) preferably with at least<br />

one year’s experience in the psychiatric disability<br />

support sector or other welfare service. The<br />

course welcomes people with personal experience<br />

of psychiatric disability.<br />

<strong>Course</strong> overview<br />

This course is designed for direct service workers<br />

in community based psychiatric disability support<br />

work settings. Major studies include: psychology,<br />

sociology, psychiatric disability support,<br />

counselling, casework, community development<br />

<strong>and</strong> working in a context of crisis. Students are<br />

required to complete two Fieldwork Placements of<br />

5 <strong>and</strong> 8 weeks full-time <strong>and</strong> a project part-time<br />

over 4 months.<br />

employment, recreation <strong>and</strong> leisure day program<br />

<strong>and</strong> drop-in centres, residential programs,<br />

accommodation <strong>and</strong> outreach support, self-help<br />

Certificate IV in Health (Nursing)<br />

Duration<br />

One year full-time, two years part-time.<br />

Entry requirements<br />

Satisfactory completion of an appropriate Victorian<br />

Year 12, or its equivalent, or mature age.<br />

Applications are invited from Aborigines <strong>and</strong><br />

Torres Strait Isl<strong>and</strong>ers <strong>and</strong> persons from non-<br />

English speaking backgrounds. Both men <strong>and</strong><br />

women are encouraged to apply.<br />

Application procedure<br />

Direct to <strong>Swinburne</strong>. Applicants must attend a<br />

compulsory information session, followed by an<br />

entrance test <strong>and</strong> interview.<br />

On the basis of information on the application<br />

form (including work experience <strong>and</strong> voluntary<br />

work), <strong>and</strong> entry test results, applicants are<br />

selected for interview.<br />

<strong>Course</strong> overview<br />

Provides the skills, knowledge <strong>and</strong> underst<strong>and</strong>ing<br />

needed for students wishing to work as Division 2<br />

nurses, particularly in nursing homes, adult day<br />

care centres <strong>and</strong> a range of other settings. The<br />

program involves classroom study <strong>and</strong> clinical<br />

placements at a range of extended care settings,<br />

nursing homes <strong>and</strong> hospitals. (Include a max of 5<br />

major study areas).<br />

A series of Post Basic Modules are available for<br />

graduates of the Certificate IV in Health (Nursing).<br />

These include post-basic training in Acute Care,<br />

Management of Alcohol <strong>and</strong> Other Substance<br />

Abuse, Maternity Nursing.<br />

Career opportunities<br />

Division 2 nurses work under the supervision of<br />

registered nurses in providing patient care in<br />

stable nursing situations <strong>and</strong> assisting Division 1<br />

nurses with patient care in less stable cases.<br />

Employment is mainly in nursing homes <strong>and</strong> adult<br />

day care centres.<br />

Safety<br />

Certificate IV in Occupational Health <strong>and</strong> Safety<br />

Mature age students with some work experience<br />

<strong>Course</strong> overview<br />

Occupational Health <strong>and</strong> Safety concerns the<br />

identification, assessment <strong>and</strong> control of<br />

conditions in the work environment that are<br />

harmful to the health <strong>and</strong> safety of people in all<br />

occupations. It also covers the prevention of<br />

accidents, injuries <strong>and</strong> ill health <strong>and</strong> the<br />

rehabilitation of injured workers.<br />

Career opportunities<br />

Occupational Health <strong>and</strong> Safety Officers are<br />

employed in a wide range of organisations, both<br />

public <strong>and</strong> private.<br />

Certificate IV: higher level supervisors who may be<br />

assistant safety officers.<br />

Certificate III: line supervisors, union<br />

representatives <strong>and</strong> safety committee members.<br />
