<strong>Course</strong> overview<br />

Diversional Therapy: providing leisure opportunities<br />

for older people <strong>and</strong> people with disabilities is a<br />

new <strong>and</strong> growing field in Australia. As these new<br />

programs emerge, there is an increasing need to<br />

provide qualified professionals to facilitate these<br />

leisure <strong>and</strong> recreation programs. Major studies<br />

include: client interaction, introduction to health,<br />

ageing in Australia, psychology, specific needs,<br />

presenting reports.<br />

Aged Care Work: aims to provide vocational<br />

training for people currently employed, or seeking<br />

employment, as personal carers in aged care<br />

settings. Major studies include: hygiene <strong>and</strong><br />

comfort, mobility, meaningful activity, grieving <strong>and</strong><br />

dying, medication administration <strong>and</strong> monitoring,<br />

dementia management.<br />

Employment as a diversional therapist, personal<br />

carer in the aged <strong>and</strong>/or disabilities services fields.<br />

Entry requirements<br />

Advanced Diploma: completion of the Diploma of<br />

Community Services (Children’s Services) – Centre<br />

Based Care stream, or its equivalent.<br />

Diploma (Centre Based Care): satisfactory<br />

completion of an appropriate Victorian Year 12 or<br />

its equivalent, or mature age.<br />

Diploma (Out of School Hours Care): satisfactory<br />

completion of an appropriate Victorian Year 12 or<br />

its equivalent, or mature age. Students working in<br />

the OSHC industry preferred.<br />

Certificate III: demonstrated interest in <strong>and</strong><br />

suitability for work in children’s services field.<br />

Certificate III (traineeship): must be eligible to<br />

register as a trainee <strong>and</strong> working in partnership<br />

with an employee.<br />

Certificate II: there are no formal entry<br />

requirements.<br />

Application procedure<br />

Advanced Diploma: direct to <strong>Swinburne</strong>.<br />

Diploma (Centre Based Care) full-time: must apply<br />

through VTAC <strong>and</strong> also complete a Child Care<br />

application form. Part-time applicants must<br />

complete a Child Care application form.<br />

All applicants must attend a compulsory<br />

information session. VCE applicants are required to<br />

attend an interview <strong>and</strong> must have an ENTER.<br />

Alternative category applicants are required to sit<br />

an entrance exam <strong>and</strong> attend an interview.<br />

Certificate III: direct to <strong>Swinburne</strong>. Applicants must<br />

complete a Child Studies application form <strong>and</strong><br />

attend a compulsory information session. This may<br />

be followed by a test <strong>and</strong> interview.<br />

<strong>Course</strong> overview<br />

Advanced Diploma: designed to further the<br />

leadership <strong>and</strong> management skills of those who<br />

hold positions of responsibility in children’s<br />

services <strong>and</strong> who wish to gain qualifications to<br />

further their career path in children’s services.<br />

Major studies include: team membership <strong>and</strong><br />

management, communication <strong>and</strong> diversity<br />

studies, health <strong>and</strong> safety, child development,<br />

guiding behaviour.<br />

Diploma (Centre Based Care): provides students<br />

with the skills, knowledge <strong>and</strong> underst<strong>and</strong>ing<br />

required to work with children as fully qualified<br />

child care professionals. The course involves the<br />

study of the social, emotional <strong>and</strong> physical<br />

development of infants <strong>and</strong> children up to the age<br />

of twelve years specialising in children 0-6 years.<br />

Major studies include: child development,<br />

observation skills, guiding behaviour,<br />

communication <strong>and</strong> diversity, team membership<br />

<strong>and</strong> management, health <strong>and</strong> safety, program <strong>and</strong><br />

curriculum studies.<br />

Diploma (Out of School Hours Care): is designed to<br />

provide the skills, knowledge, underst<strong>and</strong>ing <strong>and</strong><br />

practical skills to work with children <strong>and</strong> their<br />

families in outside school hours care programs.<br />

Graduates provide quality care for the social,<br />

emotional, physical, educational <strong>and</strong> recreational<br />

needs of school age children (5-12 years). Major<br />

studies include child development, child<br />

observation, health <strong>and</strong> safety, first aid,<br />

communicating with children, families, staff,<br />

underst<strong>and</strong>ing <strong>and</strong> guiding children’s behaviour,<br />

program planning (OSHC), play <strong>and</strong> leisure, service<br />

administration.<br />

Certificate III: part of a suite of courses that<br />

provide a comprehensive package of training to<br />

meet the needs of the children’s services industry.<br />

Two streams are available:<br />

Centre Based Care: students study the<br />

development of children 0-6 years. Theory<br />

components are interspersed with practical<br />

placements to provide knowledge of<br />

developmentally appropriate ways to meet the<br />

needs of young children. The General Stream is<br />

available for students who are competent in both<br />

written <strong>and</strong> spoken English. The Bilingual Stream<br />

is available for students from a non-English<br />

speaking background who have completed most<br />

of their schooling overseas.<br />

Out of School Care: students combine theory<br />

components with practical placement to provide<br />

knowledge of developmentally appropriate ways<br />

to meet the needs of children 6-12 years in before<br />

school care, after school <strong>and</strong> vacation care<br />

programs.<br />

Diploma (Out of School Hours Care): direct to<br />
