Fire Technology Course title Diploma of Fire Technology Certificate IV in Fire Technology Duration Diploma: two years full-time or equivalent parttime. Certificate: one year full-time or equivalent parttime. Day and evening classes are available. Offcampus study (flexible delivery) is also available for some subjects. Location Hawthorn. Entry requirements There are no formal prerequisites required, however, applicants should be able to demonstrate the following competencies: reading and writing at a level that displays emerging technical knowledge and vocabulary, ability to participate in extended learning exchanges and exploratory discussions to solve problems, ability to use and analyse everyday data, relation and pattern, number, measurement and shape. VTAC code: 77631 Course overview The Diploma is designed to develop technical skills and knowledge and to train practitioners and designers to work with engineers and related professionals in the development, commissioning, monitoring and assessment of fire safety systems, practices and products and investigation of fire emergency incidents. The course allows for specialisation in three main streams: fire safety management, fire protection design and fire investigation. The Certificate provides a broad grounding in generic workplace skills and knowledge of fire industry operations covering the principles of fire behaviour and fire protection. Course notes are supplied, and students complete the work requirements in their own time but at a predetermined rate. In September 1998 he won the prestigious gold medal in the Melbourne Regional Work Skill welding competition, and will go on to the national competition in March. This is a three-day event organised as part of the national Engineering Expo. Melbourne-born Cameron is a third year apprentice boilermaker at Kvaerner Process Systems in Bayswater, part of the multinational Kvaerner Group, making gas processing equipment. He started his apprenticeship in January 1996, when he was 17. Kvaerner had had several other apprentices go through the Certificate in Engineering Fabrication course at Swinburne’s Hawthorn campus, and felt that the program was well designed to coincide with what they did. Cameron completed the course by spending one day a week at Swinburne. ‘The course teaches you welding and fabrication techniques – I’ve got four welding tickets for different processes – plus occupational health and safety and so on. The practical work was OK, but I’ve never been much of a person for theory work, so that was a bit harder. The Certificate in Engineering Fabrication Swinburne staff were very good and I was able to go over a lot of my school work in my workplace.’ ‘The facilities at Swinburne in the new buildings are really good – they have a lot of machinery so you get a good go.’ Outside work Cameron is a busy man. He is a champion speedway racer, starting when he was only twelve and building his own car when he was sixteen. From September to June weekend race meetings can see him travelling from Broken Hill to Mildura to Bairnsdale. He also spends time trailbike riding, camping and making working quarter-scale models of steam traction engines. Cameron has one year to go to complete his apprenticeship and become a qualified boilermaker and welder. He is interested in the possibility of a more specialised job offshore, on the oil rigs, or in the gas fields. But that’s a way off. For the moment he has more medals to win. 59
Other Courses Engineering and Technology – TAFE Quality Technology Course title Certificate in Quality Technology Duration One to two years part-time. Location Hawthorn. Entry requirements Because of the strong bias towards statistical methods, the student must have a firm mathematical grounding, or a pass in Mathematic (TEA002). Bridging Mathematics can be arranged. Course overview Quality Technology is concerned with the techniques and strategies necessary to build quality into a product or service at a competitive price and to maintain this level of quality in order to give continued customer satisfaction. The achievement of quality goals in a manufacturing company is twofold. It concerns the inclusion of quality responsibilities into various functions such as product design and development, production engineering, human resources, production control purchasing, installing, and operating auditing and quality systems. Career opportunities Employment in a range of industries as quality audit or manual writer and other quality related positions. Location Hawthorn. Entry requirements Satisfactory completion of an appropriate Victorian Year 12 or its equivalent, or mature age. Basic mathematical literacy skills are desirable to enable successful completion of the course. Applicants with computer literacy qualifications may gain exemptions for some modules. Application procedure VTAC (full-time), direct to Swinburne (part-time). VTAC code: to be advised. Course overview This course covers the principles of operation of renewable energy systems such as indirect solar for heating of buildings and heat storage, radiant solar energy used for solar hot water, solar space heating and photovoltaic electricity and wind energy. The course also covers micro-hydro systems, solar biological energy and the use and re-use of plant animal materials to generate energy. Career opportunities Graduates from this course will be employed as consultants that will be capable of designing, installing, commissioning, maintaining, operating and repairing renewable energy systems. Graduates will also have the skills necessary to operate in small business management. Driver Instruction Course title Certificate III in Road Transport (Motor Vehicle Driver Instruction) Duration Three to six months part-time Location Croydon and Kilsyth (METEC) Entry requirements Current Driver’s Licence. Application procedure Direct to Swinburne. Course overview Training to work and operate as an accredited driving instructor providing a range of theoretical and practical skills for individuals entering or currently in the industry. Career opportunities Work in the transport industry as an accredited driving instructor.
