Course overview
Swinburne’s Bachelor of Business/Bachelor of Arts
(Language) is a unique course offering students a
choice of two languages: Italian or Japanese (with
no previous language knowledge) and associated
area studies including culture, social, political and
economic aspects, and an array of business
specialisations. Completing students are eligible to
receive two degrees: a Bachelor of Business and a
Bachelor of Arts (Italian or Japanese).
In addition to the academic and practical skills
which this course provides, it also opens up a
myriad of international study and work
opportunities upon which to build networks within
the country of a student’s chosen language studies.
The three year intensive language sequence
assumes no prior knowledge of the language.
Advanced entry is available for students who have
passed VCE level Italian or Japanese.
Major studies
In the first year of the course students undertake a
range of foundation studies across all Business
disciplines enabling students to ‘sample’ subject
areas before committing. Subjects include:
Accounting, Microeconomics, Organisations and
Management, Law in Global Business, The
Marketing Concept, Quantitative Analysis, and
Information Systems.
Students are required to undertake at least one
language from Italian or Japanese and undertake a
major study sequence in at least one of:
Accounting, Finance, Human Resource
Management/Organisation Behaviour, Information
Systems, International Business, Management,
Manufacturing Management or Marketing (see
separate entries for further details on each of
these, refer page 24-26).
Students can also undertake another major or
minor study sequence to single subjects, depending
on career aspirations or interests (refer to list on
page 24).
Honours
An Honours degree reflects an achievement of
excellence in a chosen field of study and can
enhance employment prospects and increase
managerial opportunities. Honours students work
independently but in close consultation with a
supervisor on a substantial project of their choice.
Students are required to collect and analyse data
and produce a substantial written thesis (10,000 to
15,000 words) on their findings. Many students
continue on to undertake their Honours year
immediately after their Bachelors degree while
others gain full-time employment and concurrently
study part-time (by this method Honours would
normally take two years).
Honours can be undertaken in Accounting,
Business Law, Business Modelling, Economics,
Finance, Human Resource Management, Information
Systems, International Business, Manufacturing
Management, Marketing, or any of the above areas
of study combined with a language component
from either Italian or Japanese.
Career opportunities
Accountancy, advertising, company legal officer,
computer programming, financial advice, human
resources, market research, public relations,
systems analysis, international trade, particularly in
organisations where there are either joint country
business ventures or offices located in the country
of the chosen language.
Professional recognition
Associate Membership of the Institute of Corporate
Managers, Secretaries and Administrators and the
Australian Institute of Banking and Finance. (See
also separate subject area entries for specific body
recognition eg. Accounting, refer page 24)
Information sessions
Information sessions will be held on Sunday 22
August 1999 between 11.00am and 3.00pm and
repeated on Tuesday 14 December 1999 between
4.00pm and 9.00pm at the Hawthorn Campus.
Attendance at one of these sessions is
recommended.
STOP PRESS
During this double degree, many Swinburne
students elect to undertake an International Student
Exchange program of either six or twelve months.
Students who participate in this program believe it
is an experience they will never forget. They return
more confident and mature with experience that
can bolster the impact of a resume. Countries
where we have exchange agreements include:
Canada, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Japan, Korea,
Poland, Thailand and the USA.
