Melissa Pfeiffer
Australian wine is big business – ask
Mildara Blass marketer Melissa Pfeiffer.
Growing up in vineyards around Australia
with her winemaker father and family has
given the Swinburne Bachelor of Business
student inside knowledge of the world of
wine.
“I approached Mildara Blass when I was
looking at IBL options in 1997. I was
majoring in marketing and very passionate
about wine, so it was a perfect match! I’ve
spent the year doing a whole range of
things, working on several product
repackagings, developing trade promotions,
looking at point of sale merchandising. I’ve
also been to some of the company’s staff
training sessions in the Yarra Valley.”
Melissa started at Swinburne’s Hawthorn
campus in 1996. “I was at boarding school
in Melbourne so I had plenty of opportunity
to look at all the universities. I wanted a
good business degree with strong
marketing, and chose Swinburne.”
Melissa is completing a major and minor
in marketing with an additional minor in
law.
“There is a lot of flexibility at Swinburne
University and the staff go out of their way
to be available to students. I’ve been
offered a permanent job here in the
there is a lot of flexibility
Bachelor of Business
marketing department at Mildara Blass, so
I’ll be doing my final year at Swinburne
part-time in the evenings – and classes
are offered so you can do that. It’s one of
the really good features of the course.”
“The IBL year is a fantastic program. You
learn all the business principles and
processes, all the jargon at uni, and then
when you’re working on IBL, it all falls into
place as to exactly what it means. It has to
enhance your employment prospects
enormously – I’ve got my first professional
job through the IBL program.”
Melissa gets home about once a month to
the family winery in Rutherglen, but with
work and study she doesn’t find herself
with too much time on her hands. “I’ll be
doing brand management work here and
two subjects per semester at Swinburne,
but it’s worth it. I’ve always wanted to
work in the wine industry, and I am.”
Ultimately Melissa would like to use her
expertise in the family business, but that’s
a long way off. “I’m just really happy doing
what I’m doing. I want to get as much
experience as possible.”
