communication and mathematical skills. Students
without these skills should complete appropriate
modules with the first semester of study. All
students may have to attend an interview.

Course overview
The course aims to provide formal education for
persons working or intending to work in areas
related to the forensic science industry. Major
studies include: laboratory mathematics,
chemistry, statistics, biology, physics, human
anatomy and physiology, legal studies.
Career opportunities
Entry level positions into the forensic science
industry. Positions are not guaranteed.
Successful completion of the course may also
allow Pathways to one of Swinburne’s diploma or
degree programs.

Duration
Diploma: two years full-time or equivalent parttime.
Certificate IV: three to four years part-time.
Certificate III: three years part-time.
Certificate II: six months full-time.
Certificate I: six weeks full-time (includes one
week job placement).

Entry requirements
Diploma/Certificate IV (full-time): satisfactory
completion of an appropriate Victorian Year 12 or
its equivalent, or mature age. Part-time students
need to demonstrate competent literacy and
numeracy skills and a commitment to the
horticulture industry.
Certificate III: must be over 15 years or over, have
appropriate numeracy and literacy skills and have
secured full or part-time employment as an
apprentice in the horticulture industry.
Certificate II: must be over 15 years or over, have
appropriate numeracy and literacy skills and have
secured full or part-time employment as a trainee
in the horticulture industry.
Certificate III: based on the industry identified
Horticulture Training Package competencies, it
aims to provide students with the knowledge and
skills to operate successfully at trade level in
nursery, flower-growing and landscape industry.
Major studies include: weed control, pest and
disease control, irrigation system maintenance.
Certificate II: aims to develop appropriate
knowledge and skills, which can enable a trainee
to perform workplace tasks to specified standards
and conditions. Major studies include: treat
weeds, treat pests and diseases, operate
equipment and machinery, maintain drainage
systems, propagation.
Certificate I: This course aims to prepare preemployment
students with the basic skills and
knowledge required to work as an apprentice or
trainee in the horticulture industry. Major studies
include: turf care, planted area care, nursery plant
care.
Career opportunities
Depending on the level of academic achievement,
employment may be sought in the areas of
garden design and property maintenance,
landscape design and construction,
retail/wholesale plant nursery operations, and
related horticultural businesses.

Diploma/Certificate IV: aims to provide students
with the essential knowledge and skills required
to operate at a professional level in the nursery,
landscape, parks and gardens or floriculture
industry. Major studies include: plant health,
irrigation, drainage, plant identification and culture
and water treatment systems, landscape
structures and features, controlled growing
environments, estimates, quotes and tenders,
business operations.
