<strong>Course</strong> overview<br />

The course aims to provide formal education for<br />

persons working or intending to work in areas<br />

related to the forensic science industry. Major<br />

studies include: laboratory mathematics,<br />

chemistry, statistics, biology, physics, human<br />

anatomy <strong>and</strong> physiology, legal studies.<br />

Entry requirements<br />

Diploma/Certificate IV (full-time): satisfactory<br />

completion of an appropriate Victorian Year 12 or<br />

its equivalent, or mature age. Part-time students<br />

need to demonstrate competent literacy <strong>and</strong><br />

numeracy skills <strong>and</strong> a commitment to the<br />

horticulture industry.<br />

Certificate III: must be over 15 years or over, have<br />

appropriate numeracy <strong>and</strong> literacy skills <strong>and</strong> have<br />

secured full or part-time employment as an<br />

apprentice in the horticulture industry.<br />

Certificate II: must be over 15 years or over, have<br />

appropriate numeracy <strong>and</strong> literacy skills <strong>and</strong> have<br />

secured full or part-time employment as a trainee<br />

in the horticulture industry.<br />

Certificate III: based on the industry identified<br />

Horticulture Training Package competencies, it<br />

aims to provide students with the knowledge <strong>and</strong><br />

skills to operate successfully at trade level in<br />

nursery, flower-growing <strong>and</strong> l<strong>and</strong>scape industry.<br />

Major studies include: weed control, pest <strong>and</strong><br />

disease control, irrigation system maintenance.<br />

Certificate II: aims to develop appropriate<br />

knowledge <strong>and</strong> skills, which can enable a trainee<br />

to perform workplace tasks to specified st<strong>and</strong>ards<br />

<strong>and</strong> conditions. Major studies include: treat<br />

weeds, treat pests <strong>and</strong> diseases, operate<br />

equipment <strong>and</strong> machinery, maintain drainage<br />

systems, propagation.<br />

Certificate I: This course aims to prepare preemployment<br />

students with the basic skills <strong>and</strong><br />

knowledge required to work as an apprentice or<br />

trainee in the horticulture industry. Major studies<br />

include: turf care, planted area care, nursery plant<br />

care.<br />

Career opportunities<br />

Depending on the level of academic achievement,<br />

employment may be sought in the areas of<br />

garden design <strong>and</strong> property maintenance,<br />

l<strong>and</strong>scape design <strong>and</strong> construction,<br />

retail/wholesale plant nursery operations, <strong>and</strong><br />

related horticultural businesses.<br />

industry. Major studies include: plant health,<br />

irrigation, drainage, plant identification <strong>and</strong> culture<br />

<strong>and</strong> water treatment systems, l<strong>and</strong>scape<br />

structures <strong>and</strong> features, controlled growing<br />

environments, estimates, quotes <strong>and</strong> tenders,<br />
