For many students entering tertiary education means leaving home for the first time; moving
to Melbourne from the country, or from overseas, while others simply decide it’s time to assert
their independence and move out of home
Transition from secondary school to university or TAFE can also involve a lifestyle transition for those students who have to leave home to
pursue their tertiary education. Many students move to Melbourne from the country or interstate regions, or from overseas, while others simply
decide it’s time to assert their independence and move out of home.
Deciding where to make your next home can be a daunting task and one which too many students think about only after they have received an
offer into a particular course. Accommodation at Swinburne includes both on-campus and off-campus options, with support staff to advise and
assist you making your decisions.
Swinburne’s eighty-five room Residential College, located in Hawthorn, features individual rooms furnished with a single bed and bedding,
built-in study desk and bookshelf, cupboards, chairs, wash basin, electric jug and hydronic heating. The adjacent Apartments comprise either
two or three bedrooms and are well suited to second year and above continuing students.
Bachelor of Design (Industrial Design) student, Tiana Sweeney, originally from Mt. Gambier, South Australia, lived at Swinburne’s Residential
College during the first year of her course. Even though Tiana couldn’t wait to become independent, she realised moving to a new state and not
having any friends at university would prove challenging.
‘At Swinburne’s Residential College, all the students are in the same boat so you know everyone is feeling the same way you are’, said Tiana.
‘That’s why it’s important to be aware of what is going on around you and to make the effort to talk to people. Also, don’t think everything will
happen at once; I have been here a year and am still settling in. I had to get used to knowing all the tram and train routes to get to classes at
the Prahran campus and to get to the city. However, I relied on the staff and students at the University to tell me how to get around to other
places’, said Tiana. The Residences also have student caretakers living in to provide a hand with things like study.
