Student Life at Swinburne
Your time at Swinburne won’t be all about classrooms, lectures
and exams. You will discover new friends, good times and a social
life you will always treasure!
Orientation Week
Held especially for first year students to familiarise them with the
campus. This event is held one week prior to classes starting and
involves a tour of the campus, information sessions, live
entertainment and free lunch and drinks.
FUBAR Week
Short for ‘Freeked-Up-Beyond- All-Recognition’ FUBAR week is a
week-long festival held in the first week of semester one. FUBAR
week is when students on all campuses celebrate their arrival at
Swinburne. A fusion of cultures and music, people and fun – a truly
friendly, enjoyable and inspiring week of entertainment, live music,
delicious foods, sunshine and festivities. Live bands, DJ’s,
comedians, street theatre, sport and recreation, club displays,
competitions, giveaways and more! It culminates at the end of the
week with the annual Union Night concert.
Disorientation Week
As the title suggests, this week-long party (held in the first week of
semester two) assumes everyone has been orientated enough to
require some celebrating! Just like FUBAR Week, Disorientation
Week is yet another week-long festival, but this time with a multicultural
flavour. Swinburne’s unique community comes alive in a
flamboyant street party. International clubs share the stage with
local acts, as Swinburne splashes another colourful event over all
campuses.
Union Night
Held at the end of FUBAR Week, Swinburne’s Union Night has
continually grown in reputation. A sell-out concert that attracts the
biggest names in live entertainment from Australia and overseas,
Swinburne’s Union Night is special because it is held over four
floors, with entertainment on all levels including bands, DJ’s, ‘chill
rooms’, bars, outdoor entertainment and more. Past bands include:
The Clouds, Custard, The Screaming Jets, Pollyanna, Bjorn Again,
Chocolate Starfish and Boom Crash Opera.
3SSR 94.1fm – Swinburne Student Radio
Swinburne has a student and community FM radio station going
live to air every night. One of the longest serving student radio
stations, 3SSR has recently experienced a dramatic resurgence in
support, interest and listenership. Training is available and you can
even have your own weekly timeslot. Joining is easy. For further

music and recreational clubs; all running special events, social
outings, field trips, information sessions and more.
SwinTV
Affiliated with Channel 31 and involved with a number of campus
initiatives, SwinTV is a recently organised group with a common
interest in film and television, which is rapidly attracting new
members. Ask at the Student Union for more information.
Balls
You can tell it’s nearing the end of the year when the Balls begin to
appear. Normally held off-campus, there are a number of Balls to
choose from including the general Swinburne Ball. Get on your
coolest threads and arrive in style for what is one of the greatest
evenings Swinburne has to offer! Tickets are cheap and includes a
three course meal and live entertainment.

Sport and Recreation
Swinburne offers a range of sporting activities and opportunities.
‘Swinergy’ is Swinburne’s Sport and Recreation association
providing facilities such as a gym and squash courts, plus activities
such as trips and tours (see below). They also facilitate short
courses, club activities and events including inter-university and
TAFE competitions and games. For more information visit the

Trips and Tours
Swinergy offer an eight-day trip to the Gold Coast in Queensland
and also an eleven-day tour of Central Australia. Other trips include
deep sea fishing, a Grampians weekend, Great Ocean Road tour,
horse riding day trip, Phillip Island penguins, seals and koalas tour,
plus skiing, winery, sailing and snow trips.
Off-Campus
The assortment of cafès, nightclubs, restaurants, theatres, shops,
cinemas and other venues that surround Swinburne campuses
contribute to the social life of students. Hawthorn campus adorns
Glenferrie Road shopping strip with its range of classy cafes and
restaurants providing a place to meet friends and enjoy the sun,
whilst Prahran campus borders on Chapel Street offering all the
best colour and culture Melbourne has to offer. The Student Union
and clubs at Croydon, Healesville, Lilydale and Wantirna also run
several off-campus events such as river cruises, movie nights and
nightclub tours.
Clubs and Societies
Offering an exciting way of enjoying things you have in common
with others, Swinburne has in excess of seventy clubs to choose
from; including social, cultural, academic, sporting, computer,
