Swimming to win; Winning for life
MISSION
By 2008, Canadian Swimming will be aligned, accountable and
performance oriented.
We will do this by:
Building collaborations based on a foundation of trust
Implementing and coordinating programs that cause the development
and growth of a national support system for athletes
and coaches
Actively listening to the input of the swimming community, and
Delivering on commitments
The results will be winning international medals, increased
participation, investment, effective use of resources, and a solutions-oriented
positive
culture.
Our programs will be directed through 5 key strategic drivers:
Elite
Sport Systems
People management
Partnerships
Business Management
These drivers form the foundation of our plan and will require
SNC to set progressive yet attainable goals and tactics. Our
strategic plan will evolve and grow as we proceed, as will our
circle of commitment through new intellectual capital and partnerships
with other independent, yet like-minded organizations.

Swimming to win,
Winning for life
President’s report
The most important learning for Swimming Canada this past year is the emergence of collective leadership among our membership; a notion
has been embraced Đ
But even more important is the understanding that collective leadership is only possible with dialogue. When people listen, share, generally
communicate, things happen. In the last year we have seen individuals pulling in the same direction and believing again that we can win, while
putting the best interest of our great sport first.
2006 Goals and Outcomes
As we look tĐ
Plan were:
• 8% increase in new memberships of pre-competitive and competitive swimmers
• 15% of all national and provincial records will be broken
• 10% increase in Swimming Canada operating budget
• 10% of all swimmers, coaches and officials will have development plans
• 1 gold medal at Commonwealth Games
• 2 relay medals at Commonwealth Games
• 5 medals at Pan Pacific Swimming Championships
Goal: 8% increase in new memberships of pre-competitive and competitive swimmers
Outcome: Together, we achieved an overall 5% increase in the number of competitive swimmers. Eight provinces successfully increased their
numĐ -
ing our goal Đ
membership segment. There was however, an overall 3% decrease in pre-competitive swimmer membership, which must be addressed in
swimmer recruitment strategies next year.
Goal: 15% of all national and provincial records will be broken
Outcome: An average of 8% new provincial and national records were set this year. This is short of our overall goal, but we are pleased to see
that we did meet the target in a specific category with 15% senior male and 16% senior female new national records.
Goal: 10% increase in Swimming Canada operating budget
Outcome: Swimming Canada’s operating budget rose by 3% from $4,237,000 to $4,359,000. New sponsors came on board to support the
national program and Pan Pacs, and we must continue to be innovative in our approach to sponsorship and fundraising as we work towards our
revenue goals.
SWIMMING CANADA - ANNUAL REPORT 2005-06
Goal: 10% of all swimmers, coaches and officials will have development plans
Outcome: While not quantifiable at this point, there has been movement in the creation of development plans for each of these three key target
segments. A draft of the long-term athlete development plan has been circulated to key stakeholders for input and will be finalized by the end
of 2006. SNC has led a number initiatives to ensure professional development for coaches, and will work closely with CSCTA in a review of the
NCCP program while officials’ clinic programs are also being retooled.
Goal: 1 gold medal at Commonwealth Games
Outcome: Congratulations to Mike Brown for winning gold in the 200 m Breaststroke and breaking a 12 year old meet record at the 2006 Commonwealth
Games held in Australia!
Goal: 2 relay medals at Commonwealth Games
Outcome: The men’s and women’s 4 x 100 freestyle, and the women’s 4 x 100 medley relay teams won 3 bronze medals. Overall, the Canadian
team won 16 medals and broke 12 national records.
Goal: 5 medals at Pan Pacific Swimming Championships
Outcome: Our athletes won 8 medals at Pan Pacs, including 2 gold, 4 silver and 2 bronze and broke 8 Canadian records. Congratulations to
all our athletes and coaches on their achievements. For a second year in a row, we’ve been able to witness the excitement of winning on home
soil.
Our athleteĐ
on the rise, and new corporate partners are coming on board to support Canadian swimming and as fate would have it Alex Baumann is coming
back to Canada to lead Road to Excellence, the summer Olympic sport program—we are on a roll!
Collectively, we are recreating a culture of performance. Let’s remember to celebrate our successes together and take responsibility to get back
on track when we fall short of our goals.
Recognition in the Sport Community
Across the country and around the world, our stakeholders are noting a resurgence of Canadian Swimming – a new confidence in our sport.
Positive profile for swimming is growing in media and in the sport community. Debbie Muir, author of SNC’s Review – The Muir report, published
in 2004, noted recently that ‘There has been a dramatic cultural shift within the organization - knowledge is being shared and there is
a greater sense of inclusiveness. The Clubs feel a greater sense of hope as the role and importance of the Club coaches has been identified.
Hiring a CEO (Pierre Lafontaine) with cutting edge technical leadership has inspired the Canadian sport community.’
Living our Vision
We can say with confidence that we are living up to our Vision of Swimming to Win; Winning for Life. This progress may be best demonstrated
in four emĐ -
ming family over this past year.
Collaboration- was most evident at the Pan Pacific Championships. Our special thanks to Swim BC, the community of Saanich, the participating
clubs aĐ
personĐ
President’s report
Leadership - as demonstrated by the province of Quebec for leading the country with 80 provincial records broken last year. FNQ has embraced the
SNC goal of breaking every provincial and national record by 2012 – great job!
Courage - to our young women’s 4X100 free relay – silver medalists at the Commonwealth Games and at Pan Pacs, who raced against some of the
world’s toughest competitors, and broke a 6 year old Canadian record in the process.
Integrity- goes to our CEO who fostered a Memorandum of Understanding with the Red Cross in an effort to promote water safety and help reduce the
number of accidental drĐ
an effort to grow participation in swimming.
The Way Forward our priorities for 2006/7
Operating to Policy Board
We have a number of important bylaw changes thanks to the Policy and Governance committee under the direction of Anne Bell and Jim Shaw. This
work has been long overdue and signals a new operating philosophy for SNC. Moving forward we will rely more than ever on our professional staff
for leadership. The board will remain focused on Policy and directing rather than doing. We must continue to attract new volunteers who will supply
relevant expertĐ
members.
Re-engineered Committee structure
Our new policy and governance strategy outlines an increase in the number of standing committees from four to five ( Policy and Governance, Audit
& Finance, Business & Risk Management, Program Policy and Nominating committee). All other committees are now considered operating committees
and report directly to the CEO.
Process
Clearly we are providing best in class leadership to the sport community with the technical expertise we have secured. But we have work to do in
standardizing systeĐ
be a prioritĐ
. We will
continue to support our CEO and help to secure the necessary resources.
SWIMMING CANADA - ANNUAL REPORT 2005-06
Seamless National Integration
One Team - One Goal - One Nation Canada sums it up best. We will continue to seek seamless integration in our long term development strategy and
action plans. Collective leadership and our commitment to share ideas and support at the national direction is critical.
International Relations Strategy
SNC is creating a Đ
been formed, whose job it will be to articulate strategies against five platforms. They are Events, Technical representation, Technical policy, Marketing
and Governance. WĐe
will certainly leverage our international friends including the United States, Australia, Japan, England, France and new dialogue with South Africa.
Brand Renewal
SNC now has a very credible product that may be marketed to corporate Canada. To capitalize on the opportunity, we must be able to deliver programs
nationally in a seamless and consistent fashion. A new brand Identity has been created that reflects our strong Canadian heritage in a contemporary
image. The nĐ
of other sport federations. Brand consistency and seamless program delivery nationally are critical if we are to maximize the revenue potential.
Corporations today wantĐ
assessable and loyal consumer groups. If we are to be successful in the corporate marketplace we need to be able to deliver programs seamlessly
across our great swimming community. Our ability to work collaboratively is critical. Our commitment is to invest dollars raised in programs that
help make a difference for our community. But we need product to sell and we are all accountable to create and deliver these programs together
Masters Swimming
We have invested aĐ
Special thanks to Bill Hogan for leading a sub committee that thoughtfully looked into the issues. Thanks to Chris Smith, President of MSC for his
support and the support of the new MSC board. Moving forward we have created under the guidance of both organizations staff a joint committee
headed by Frank Coy. We look forward to working collaboratively on a number of mutual projects to help harness the development of our sport.
Winning for life is about enjoying the sport of swimming over our lifetimes. Our swimmers of today will be a large part of the masters swimming
community tomorrow. We will continue to support and nurture this relationship.
We are all Swimming Canada
SNC is moving forward and I am very proud of all the people involved in the process. We need to keep the pressure on ourselves to search out new
thinking, challenge ourselves, share ideas and do what’s best for our great sport. We must continue to believe in ourselves and all the great people
who make up our association and we must all continue to evolve our culture of accountability from coast to coast.
Finally, I would like to thank the SNC board and our staff for their hard work and support last year. They continue to put the interest of our sport first
and exemplify our vision of Swimming to Win, Winning for Life!
Yours in Swimming,
CEO’s report
Strategic Plan
Looking back on our goals established for the 2006 year, we can see that we are moving forward in a positive direction. We achieved a 5% increase
in the number Đ
our operating buĐ
through the swĐ -
monwealth Games and 8 medals at the Pan Pacific Championships. These 12 medals surpassed our goal of a total of 8 medals; 1 gold and 2 relay
medal at the Commonwealth Games and 5 medals at the Pan Pacific Championships.
Delivery of Service
Swimming Canada is continuing to improve the relationship with its members and stakeholders by increasing its level of service and value. We have
hired two additional staff members, Katie Dolan and Erin Sulpher who are helping with membership servicing, marketing and communication support
and office administration. By launching a weekly electronic newsletter to clubs, provincial sections, athletes and parents, by formulating virtual
meets fĐ
o help
service the clubs across the country better, we have developed a new position; Domestic Operations Manager. We are very excited to bring Andrew
Moss on board to fill this role which begins October 1, 2006.
Change in Culture
One Team – One Goal – One Nation, Canada; this is our belief. We will continue to work together with our athletes and coaches to share knowledge,
ideas, and support services to all levels across the country. We are fostering a partnership with the Red Cross and have developed a Memorandum
of Understanding in an effort to promote water safety and help reduce the number of accidental drownings in Canada. We are also collaborating with
the CIS; who together with Byron MacDonald of the University of Toronto have developed Canada First, an information handbook for prospective university
students. Our goal is to inform every high school athlete, parent and coach about the potential education and training opportunities right here
in Canada. We Đ
We must communicate the pros and cons of U.S. college scholarships and develop our own national, made-in-Canada high energy university swim
conference and scholarship solution.
National Training Centres
This year we have re-structured our National Swim Centre Program to provide comprehensive resource centres for athletes and coaches as well as
providing a channel of decentralized services that can be accessed by swimmers and coaches across the country. We have established two Centres;
one in Vancouver and one in Montreal and hired four new coaches; Tom Johnson, Head Coach and Jozsef Nagy, Assistant Coach in Vancouver, Paul
Bergen, Head Coach, and Benoit Lebrun, Coach in Montreal. The two Centres began operation as of September 1, 2006.
AFC/Sport collaboration
We are collaborating with our aquatic partners to establish efficiencies and cost savings through shared services, but more importantly to advocate,
as one voice, for greater investment in aquatic sport. Our short term collaboration is focused on planning for the 2007 World Championships, the
organization of aĐ -
prehensive needs analysis and strategy has been initiated to address aquatic infrastructure development in Southern Ontario.
National Team
We had two major international competitions this year; the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, Australia and the Pan Pacific Championships in Victoria,
British Columbia. Thirty-two of our swimmers traveled to the Land Down Under in March and won 16 medals and broke 12 national records.
It was a positive and valuable experience for everyone involved.
SWIMMING CANADA - ANNUAL REPORT 2005-06
The Pan Pacific Championships were hosted this summer in Victoria, British Columbia. This competition was a very important development experience
for our young athletes. Mark Hahto and Andrew Moss took on the challenge of organizing this very successful competition in only six months. A
huge thank you goes out to Mark and Andrew, to the city of Victoria, Saanich Commonwealth Place Pool, the organizing committee and all of the volunteers!
WiĐ
Moving Forward
The 2006/2007 season is going to be another exciting year of growth as we move closer to the 2008 Olympic Games. We need to continue to build
and foster relationships with our coaches, provincial sections and athletes. We can help our coaches by creating more professional development
opportunities for them as they are absolutely critical in our success as a dominant swim nation. Building stronger partnerships and cooperation with
our provincial sections arĐ
for our retired athletes is another service we can offer to help move them forward in their careers after swimming. Lastly, we need to increase our
relationship and involvement with FINA. We want to increase the number of international meets on North American soil as well as develop a plan to
bid on hosting the FINA World Youth Championships in 2010.
Increasing our service and awareness of the Swimming Canada brand must be the core of our business. The brand of our swimming family and the
strength in brand unity are essential for us to move forward.
We need to be the number one sport federation in Canada by taking a leading position in all aspects of sport. This means we must be innovative in
our events, in our marketing, and in all aspects of our organization. We must develop new vehicles to communicate our sport to a greater audience.
We need to target children and develop new and innovative ways to interest them in swimming. We can do this through greater profile on television
and in new media, and through cross promotions in the course of partnerships and corporate sponsors.
I would like to thank the SNC Board of Directors for their hard work and tremendous support; and a special note of thanks to our staff for their hard
work over this past year.
One Team – One Goal – One Nation, Canada! Together we are building this dream into a reality. It takes each and every one of us to work together
and support the goals of our athletes. We can make dreams come true for our swimmers!
High Performance Sport Review process
Sport Canada continues to progress the High Performance Sport Review Process towards the summer sport version of the winter sport
“Own the Podium” program. Dr. Roger Jackson, retained as a consultant to fashion the “Podium Program” for summer sports tabled his
report at the end of the summer. Swimming Canada is looking to progress its status within the program and move to access key funding
dollars targeting Olympic potential medalists, their coaches and programs.
The national Performance Enhancement Team (PET) has been formed and will receive their funding through PacificSport, under the jurisdiction
of Dr. Gord Slievert and Pierre Lafontaine. This initiative is consolidated under the Podium Program.
National Training Centres
TĐ
or given the opportunity to run out the course of the season. The two new centres were identified (Montreal and Vancouver) and staffed.
The staff for the Vancouver centre is: Tom Johnson, Head Coach; Josef Nagy, Assistant Coach. The Montreal Centre sees the return of
Paul Bergen to Canada as the centre Head Coach; and the appointment of Benoit Lebrun as Coach. Athlete intake processes will be finalized
by the end of September.
National Team Development Strategy
SNC was able to progress the National Team Development Program to incorporate funding and activities for all four levels of the program;
Age Group; Prospects; Youth and Junior squads. The Youth and Junior teams continued to be exposed to the rigors of travel, training and
competition by participating in the Victoria State Age Group and Open Championships in Melbourne. The tour effectively presented the
swimmers (16 Junior and 16 Youth) with a training opportunity followed by 10 full days of competition. The experience was designed to
presentĐ .
ThisĐ
successful and seamless transition to the Senior National Team. The success of this ‘strategy’ can be measured in the graduation rate to
the Senior National Team; the 2006 Pan Pacific Championship team had 34 National Team Development program swimmers on a team
of 64.
SWIMMING CANADA - ANNUAL REPORT 2005-06
As is the caseĐ
the inaugural FINA World Youth Swimming Championships, held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Canada supported this competition by selecting
8 swimmers (4 male and 4 female) based on performances from the Senior Nationals and Pan Pacific Trials. Our key strategy of sending
Youth and Junior squads ‘into battle’ facing adversity and ‘bare bones’ preparation was extended to this competition. Several of the
selected athletes competed at Pan Pacific Championships through to Saturday and then promptly jumped on a flight to Rio and with
one day preparation were into the competition. The swimmers were able to experience travel and environmental rigors not unfamiliar to
any swĐ
international performances in the future.
Carding
This has been the first year under the re-focussed carding program wherein world rankings as opposed to ‘points charts’ were used to
determine carding recipients. While there have been challenges in securing reliable world rankings this is seen as a temporary situation
and should be resolved this year. After one year our experience tells us that the ‘right’ swimmers are being selected based on quality of
performance and no speculation regarding a skewed points chart has clouded carding selection. We will continue to monitor the Youth
and Junior card selections carefully. Our concern here mainly lies with the amount of resources being afforded to very young swimmers.
Our thoughts are that perhaps we need to lobby Sport Canada to re-establish a third level of carding funding.
Incentive Programs
Swimming Canada manages three core incentive programs; the SNC Club Grant, Speedo/SNC Swimmers Incentive Program and the SNC
Coaches International High Performance Support program. The Club Grant distributes $150,000.00; the Swimmers Incentive Program
$30,000.00; and the Coaches Support Program $20,000.00 for a total of $200,000.00 focused directly back into the club system to
assist in the progression of high performance swimming. All programs are ‘scored’ on a results based system of both domestic and international
performances.
IĐ
understanding of how they were generating funds for their club. The scoring mechanism was shifted form a points threshold performance
to rewarding absolute placings, both domestically and internationally. These changes proved positive and have resulted in allocating
funds to more clubs whilst ensuring that the totals to key performing clubs were not watered down so substantially that the programs
impact was neutralized.
SNC Club Grant – funding to 20 swim clubs
Speedo / SNC Swimmers Incentive Program – funding to 21 swimmers
SNC Coaches International High Performance Support Program – funding to 15 coaches
Technical report
Swimming Canada designated competitions
National level competitions were very well received and provided a great degree of support and success this year. The advent of the Age
Group national Championship as an evolution of the Club Nationals project worked very well and will be run again in 2007 in the same
format. Subtle amendments to distance freestyle standards have been made.
AtĐ
tunities.
This was done in place of hosting stand alone trials for selection competitions. Senior Nationals and Pan Pacific Trials were a huge success,
both from a pure competition perspective, but also from an organizational and venue basis. Returning to the Parc de Jean Drapeau one short
year after the World Championship gave the hosts Beaconsfield and Samak clubs every opportunity to present the best National Championships
ever, and they did not fail. Swimming Canada extends our thanks and kudos to the team lead by Pierre Cloutier and Pierre de Repentigny,
and Đ
Coaching Development
SNC Staff have worked closely with the CSCTA to keep abreast of the challenges facing the delivery of the NCCP (certification) and other
professional development opportunities for coaches. SNC was a key partner in securing Olympic Solidarity funds for the Pan Pacific Coaching
Symposium hosted by Swim BC and the Victoria National Coaching Institute. Attendance at this unique coaching professional development
opportunity was very weak and more will have to be done to explore the needs and timing for coaches to attend these opportunities. SNC
staff is focussing more on the opportunity to host a national coaching conference in 2008.
Women iĐ -
lized to select 3 candidates to attend international coaching opportunities as part of the coaching staff. Paula Crutcher of UNB (Fredericton,
NB) coached at the Pan Pacific Championships; Linda Kiefer of U of T (Toronto, ON) coached at the World Open Water Championships; and
Karin Lefebvre coached at the Fina World Youth Championships. Other coaches received funding to attend the Pan Pacific Coaches seminar.
SNC will continue to strategically place women in key coaching positions at the international level.
National Team Camps
SNC staff consolidated our stroke camp strategy that took place across the country last year into a single national team camp held at UBC in
early May. The key strategy here was to work off the success of last years stroke camp programs and to bring the entire national team into a
focussed head-to-head training environment in support of the preparations for the large team planned for Pan Pacific Champs. The value of
Investing in Canadian
Swimming!

Marketing report
In our Strategic Plan, Swimming Canada has set an ambitious target within its Business Management strategy – to double our operating budget
by 2012. WeĐ
strategy and Đ
support our athletes and coaches; that help strengthen our swim clubs at the grassroots level, and that help to grow participation in our sport.
New Partnerships
The creation of new partnerships this year, propelled by the performance of our athletes on the world stage and the hosting of the 2006 Pan
Pacific Swimming Championships, brings new opportunities for long-term support from the corporate sector.
Swimming Canada is proud to welcome Bell Canada as our newest corporate partner. This new partnership initiated the launch of the Bell
Grand Prix, and the provision of prize money on the three-city competitive circuit: Vancouver, Montreal and Toronto. The event included the Bell
Youth Swim Clinic, where local coaches worked with young swimmers in the region on specific stroke, turn and start instruction. Highlights of
each clinic were provided on SNC’s website as an educational resource. Bell and SNC are soon launching a dedicated product offering for our
membership, that will also act as fundraising opportunity for local swim clubs. We are also working together to create exciting new content data
for distribution through Bell Mobility, Sympatico and Bell ExpressVu.
At the 2006 Pan Pacific Championships we welcomed a host of new partners from Canada and around the world. We express our sincere appreciation
to USA Swimming, whose collaboration enabled us to attain Mutual of Omaha as a title sponsor. We would like to acknowledge the
generous support of our government partners: The Province of British Columbia, Sport Canada and the Municipality of Saanich. We would also
like to thank our presenting sponsors: Speedo, Bell, the University of Victoria and the University of British Columbia for their great partnership
in the hosting of Pan Pacs. The participation of Gold sponsors Subaru, ACDSee Systems, Lotte, Sanyo Shinpan, and Omega, as well as bronze
sponsors Talisman Energy and event sponsor CN, is a fantastic indicator of the growing confidence in our sport. We believe the momentum will
continue as we lead to 2007 and 2008, and we are confident we can capitalize on the relationships that have been established.
Television
Television coverage of swimming is a key factor in our ability to generate corporate support. SNC invested in the production and broadcast of
the Pan Pacific Swimming Championships TV special for TSN and RDS. The Canadian broadcasts resulted in a viewing audience of 100,000,
in addition to the xxx viewers worldwide through networks such as NBC, TV Asashi and Channel 9, among others. We are exploring key swimming
events scheduled in 2007 and 2008, such as the Bell Grand Prix and the Olympic Trials, for future broadcasts.
SWIMMING CANADA - ANNUAL REPORT 2005-06
The attraction of streamlining video, such as the Pan Pacs highlights video available on Bell Sympatico this year, signifies an important new
channel for disĐ
alone, which demonstrates an exciting new distribution channel for swimming.
New Brand
We are proud to unveil a new brand identity for Swimming Canada this year. The
new Swimming Canada marque reflects the current, dynamic nature of the organization.
It reflects the particular attributes of our sport – power, speed and fluidity, and
above, through the use of stylized maple leaf, it is symbolic of Canada.
We are encouraging our provincial associations and clubs to integrate this new
marque within their brand identity to build a strong, consistent identity for Canadian
swimming. The logo and our associated brand use guidelines have been provided to
all provincial associations and is widely accessible through the SNC website.
Celebrating our successes!

Communications report
Celebrating our successes
The 2005/2006 season was truly a year in motion for the sport of swimming in Canada. With the success of the Canadian Team at the 2005
FINA World Aquatic Championships, the Commonwealth Games and the Pan Pacific Swimming Championships celebrated by many Canadians
across the country, many news headlines focused on the rejuvenation of Canadian swimming. In line with the Swimming Canada new strategic
direction and set targets, our internal and external communications to the media, general public and swimming family were the focused on “Celebrating
our successes” from grassroots to high performance, to new Swimming Canada corporate direction. The majority of our targeted goals
and tactiĐ
new tools that allowed us to better profile our athletes, coaches and clubs and events to a much larger audience.
Communications Tools
At the start of the 2005/2006 season, the communications department launched the new Swimming Canada website. A complete overhaul of
the site was produced internally adding new sections, new dynamic look and feel and simplified navigation. The vision of swimming.ca was to
become our Đ
content growing to an average of 2-3 new articles per day. Our website traffic consistently increased over the months with a total of 995,083
visits between September 1st of 2005 and August 31 of 2006.
Throughout the course of the year, additional sections were introduced including tailored content for Swim Clubs, Parents and Volunteers, Swimmers
with a Disability as well as Alumni & Friends. In addition, partnerships with major swimming websites across the globe (Swim News,
Swimming World, Swimmers’ World, In Sweep) were created to offer a glimpse of international swimming to the swimming.ca visitors by the
use of RSS syndicated news feeds.
Profiling ouĐy
generated great excitement throughout the swimming and sports media community. Athletes competing for Canada as part of the Youth, Junior,
Commonwealth Games and Pan Pacific Championships teams were featured in the Swimmer’s Bio’s section of the swimming.ca website.
In support of Swimming Canada’s Alumni outreach and Fundraising program, an online virtual community was created. This new interactive
tool allows AlumnĐ
for Swimming Canada to the wealth of knowledge and expertise of our Canadian Swimming Alumnus.
With the significant increase of print and online sports media requests for athlete images, the need for an efficient image management tool
presented itself. The involvement of ACDsee as corporate sponsor for the 2006 Pan pacific Championships allowed us to obtain the ACDsee
pro photo manager software that currently manages over 35 000 high resolution images of Canadian swimming.
Media Servicing
Media cĐ
organization.
The 2005 Commonwealth Games Trials in Victoria BC generated a fair amount of media interest
and exposure in Western Canada, but due to deadline times, eastern coverage was predominantly
online and radio. Great measures were taken to obtain onsite media interest for the 2006 Commonwealth
Games in Melbourne Australia. A group of Communications experts was put together
by the CGC to create a communications strategy for the Games. A great deal of Canadian Media
outlets travelled to Australia to cover the events such as CBC Sports, CBC Radio, The Globe and
Mail, The Canadian Press, Journal de Montreal and Swim News.
A new tool for media was initiated by the Canada swimming delegation in order to service media
within Canada. Daily half-hour telephone press conference were organised with swimmers and
coaches. Media where able to dial in from Canada and participate in these press conference and
interact with athletes in a Q & A period moderated by the Swimming Canada press officer. Subsequently,
a thorough media guide for the event was available to press via the swimming.ca website
as well as printed copies.
The launch of the Bell Grand Prix series also generated great media attendance to the competitions
in Vancouver and Montreal. A joint press conference was organized with the Canadian Red Cross
in Vancouver to launch the Bell Grand Prix and the new partnership. We received great onsite
support from The Province, The Vancouver Sun, The Globe and Mail, CP, Global TV, A Channel and
CTV.
“The Tele-Press Conferences
from the Commonwealth
Games in
Melbourne Australia
made me feel part of the
action. A great tool that
was greatly appreciated
by media in Canada!”
- Martin Cleary
Sports writer, Ottawa Citizen
The 2006 Pan Pacific Championship Trials in Montreal was a great opportunity to promote our Canadian swimmers. A strong basin of media
(print, radio, internet and television) where present on pool deck and generated great support from Swim News, La Presse, The Montreal Gazette,
The Canadian Press, Journal de Montreal, RDS. The excitement continued on at the Pan Pacific Championships in Victoria with onsite
presence from the Canadian Press, Victoria Times Colonists, La Presse, CH TV, A Channel and TSN. The Canadian print coverage reached a
circulation of 8,139,944 and the Canadian television coverage on TSN and RDS generated more than 90 000 viewers.
