In your first year <strong>of</strong> the visual arts program you will be<br />

introduced to basic concepts <strong>of</strong> studio art practices, art<br />

history and visual culture. Both in the studio and in the<br />

classroom you will be encouraged to develop a rigorous<br />

approach to producing work and developing your ideas.<br />

In the second and third years, we <strong>of</strong>fer a comprehensive<br />

range <strong>of</strong> studio courses as well as art history and<br />

academic electives. Regular critiques and discussions will<br />

help you develop the skills you will need to explore and<br />

present the world as you envision it. In your fourth year<br />

you will have the opportunity to work on your own with<br />

the goal <strong>of</strong> developing an independent body <strong>of</strong> work.<br />

One-on-one discussions <strong>of</strong> your work with your faculty<br />

adviser, auxiliary advisers and visiting artists will be<br />

integral parts <strong>of</strong> this process.<br />

You will even have the chance to study at <strong>Memorial</strong><br />

<strong>University</strong>’s campus in Harlow, England. Our vibrant<br />

Visiting Artists Program will allow you to shape your<br />

work with pr<strong>of</strong>essionals from all over as well as to make<br />

important contacts that will help you build your career.<br />

Although formal training is not a requirement, you<br />

will be required to submit a portfolio <strong>of</strong> your work.<br />

Enrolment is limited and the selection is very<br />

competitive. You should submit your visual arts<br />

application by March 1, in addition to your<br />

general university admissions application.<br />

The Grenfell Campus Art Gallery<br />

<strong>of</strong>fers a venue for national and<br />

international exhibitions, and also<br />

for student work. Visual arts faculty and staff are<br />

<strong>of</strong>ten exhibited as well.<br />

A <strong>2011</strong> Rhodes Scholar, Gabrielle Hughes <strong>of</strong> Corner Brook has lots to look<br />

forward to. And she attributes much <strong>of</strong> her academic success to the time she<br />

spent at Grenfell. ”The VA program is incredibly friendly, motivating and<br />

challenging,” she said, adding that her current research interests lie in the field<br />

<strong>of</strong> art history. ”The instructors are extremely knowledgeable and genuinely<br />

concerned about the work <strong>of</strong> the students and the progress they are making.<br />

My education at Grenfell has equipped me with a skill set that will be invaluable<br />

at Oxford.”
