Our historical studies program offers a flexible and
multi-disciplinary approach to history.
Choosing it as your major will help you develop the
ability to articulate the significance of political, social,
cultural, economic and military events. You may also
take a joint major or consider taking historical studies
as a minor.
At Grenfell we will help you develop the ability to
analyze and interpret past events, and to learn how
they shaped our world. Our faculty make every effort
to help students think critically and become
independent thinkers. The research, writing and
other skills you will learn can open doors to
professional careers in education, law, public service,
journalism, tourism, museum studies and politics,
communications and knowledge-based industries.
Our low student-professor ratios combine with quality
instruction to provide a more personalized teaching
approach. And our excellent library system provides
collections of documents and scholarly works to assist
and encourage students to learn about the past.

Students interested in meeting
people with interests similar
to their own are invited to join
the Student History Society. As well, Grenfell’s
Historical Studies program offers several prestigious
awards to eligible students, including The Joanne
Swan Greenlee Prize in Historical Studies, The
Capt. Hugh Palliser Prize in History and the
Historical Studies Merit Award.

Carolynne Gabriel believes Grenfell’s BA in historical studies ensures that
students have a well-rounded understanding and appreciation of history.

instruction received on how to think critically, are important for understanding
