Our program is interdisciplinary, combining aspects
of all the natural sciences. It includes a general or
honours option and provides a broad background
in many areas pertaining to the environment, such
as oceanography, soil and soil remediation,
environmental economics, energy and the
environment, global climate change and
conservation biology. We offer two concentrations
within this program: environmental biology
and environmental chemistry.
The environmental biology stream investigates how
human activities affect the relationships between
environmental factors and organisms in terrestrial and
freshwater habitats; seeking solutions to problems
caused by human impact.
The environmental chemistry stream focuses on the
chemical processes of life existence, and the fate
of anthropogenic contaminants in the environment.
Emphasis is on analytical chemistry which measures
the amount of anthropogenic contaminants in the
environment, while aquatic, atmospheric, and
industrial courses cover, among other aspects,
natural and artificial approaches to remediation.
REACHING
OUT:
Dr. Geoff Rayner Canham and his
multi-coloured coat won a huge
honour this year. His efforts to
spread the word about chemistry earned him a
prestigious award – the Natural Sciences and
Engineering Research Council of Canada’s
individual award for science promotion, including
a medal, certificate, and $10,000 prize.
Jake Russell-Mercier chose to pursue the environmental science (honours) biology
stream not only because of his interest in this field, but also because "it is
becoming a subject of increased importance on a global scale. This program will
serve me in the future as it provides me with a strong interdisciplinary theoretical
base along with some valued practical experience." Jake says he received
excellent instruction at Grenfell and feels his professors were genuinely interested
in his academic career. "I enjoyed and appreciated my Grenfell experience – my
profs were very approachable, knowledgeable and eager to assist me." Jake was
the 2010 winner of the University Medal for Academic Excellence in Environmental
Science and is now pursuing a master’s degree at the University of Ottawa.
