A town on the go
Well, Corner Brook is actually a city. But as university
towns go, you won’t find a place more on the go
than this one. You can take in a play, movie or art
exhibit one night, and go spelunking the next (that’s
cave exploration, for you newbie adventurers).
Corner Brook has:
n A population of 22,000 (with a population of 45,000
in the Bay of Islands/Humber Valley region)
6
n Boutiques, box stores, art galleries, restaurants,
fitness centres, coffee shops, concert venues, spas
– all the amenities of a larger city with the charm
of a smaller town
n A metro bus system, taxi companies
n Zip lining, walking trails, biking and running clubs,
swimming and skating arenas, downhill and
cross-country skiing
OVER
THE TOP:
There’s a ridiculous amount of stuff on the go
in this city. Visit the community blog and events
calendar at www.cornerbrooker.com so you
don’t get left out!

Go west!
The great thing about the west coast of the island of
Newfoundland (where Corner Brook is) is there’s lots
of sun in the summer and fall (for hiking and biking),
lots of snow in the winter (for skiing and snowshoeing).
Here’s the 411:
n Marble Mountain (downhill) and Blow-Me-Down
(cross country) – 15 minutes from campus (by car)
n Gros Morne National Park (a UNESCO World
Heritage Site) – one hour away
7
n Sandy beaches of Burgeo and Shallow Bay – two
hours away
n L’Anse aux Meadows (the Vikings’ digs from 1,000
years ago) – 5 hours away
As a student at Grenfell, your extracurricular activities
might take you to any of these places (especially if you
join the Grenfell Outdoor Club!). Or better yet – your
studies might take you there.
Adventuring isn’t just for evenings and weekends.
During the week you might find yourself on a field
trip studying the unique geology and environment
of western Newfoundland. Whether you’re a student
of science, literature, theatre or psychology, you are
influenced by your surroundings.
Make sure you get out and learn what makes this
place so awesome.
CATCH
SOME AIR:
MARBLE MOUNTAIN’S
peak is at 1,700 feet. The resort has the only highspeed
detachable quad lift in Atlantic Canada. If
you’ve never skied before, we have the answer:
Grenfell offers learn-to-ski programs at Marble
every winter. Learn more about Marble:
www.skimarble.com.

The quest for
cheap rent and parking
Got you covered – we have both.
Living on campus at Grenfell is convenient, safe and
inexpensive. Where else are you going to find a private
bedroom, free phone and wireless internet, living
space, cooking facilities, laundry facilities and parking
for about $400 a month?
8
We have two options: traditional residence or chalet
apartments. If you live in residence, you share a
bathroom and a fridge with one other person but you
still get your own bedroom. If you live in the chalets,
you share an apartment with three other people
(including 1.5 bathrooms, kitchen and living room).
One more thing – if you’re a first-year student and
you apply by the March 1 deadline (and meet all
conditions), you are GUARANTEED a room in rez
or the chalets for one academic year. Apply online at
www.grenfell.mun.ca/grenfell-res/onlineapplication
and send the $20 housing application fee by March 1;
after this date applications are processed as time
permits.
Ontario, Paul was the recipient of one of our $4,000
Belize scholarships that took him to Galen University in
Belize for six weeks. And then he took advantage of the
National Student Exchange Program and landed at the
University of Hawaii in Hilo.

BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION
BACHELOR OF BUSINESS
ADMINISTRATION
(BBA)
No one escapes the influence of business.
Business is all around us. It’s the science and
art of managing people to produce goods,
services and experiences. Grenfell’s bachelor
of business administration will teach you how to
provide these commodities in today’s marketspaces
in the most effective, creative and responsible way.
There are employment prospects in human resources,
as well as the countless opportunities that exist in the area
of self-employment.
Jenna Jones, BBA

The bachelor of business administration (BBA) at
Grenfell Campus is a 120-credit- hour undergraduate
business program that is designed to deliver a
comprehensive foundation in the fundamentals of
business and decision-making. The program also
emphasizes the importance of honing such practical
skills as critical thinking, research and analysis,
professional verbal and written communication and
interpersonal conduct. A required suite of traditional
business courses ensures you will be equipped in the
functional areas of business operation, such as
accounting, marketing, finance and human resources.
In addition, the Grenfell BBA allows you to
concentrate on one of two growing areas
of interest in our ever-evolving business
environment: contemporary business studies,
and small business and entrepreneurship.
There are several ways you can gain entry to
the Grenfell BBA. You may apply for admission
directly from high school, or those with the
appropriate academic background may be eligible
for advanced standing. If you have advanced
standing or are a transfer student, make sure you
consult with the program chair before seeking
enrolment in the program.
The folks there are guiding young entrepreneurs in
Corner Brook, enabling students at both Grenfell
and the Corner Brook public college to explore
the potential of turning ideas and research into
commercial enterprises.
Jenna Jones chose Grenfell's business administration program because she saw it as
a degree that would open a lot of doors. "The BBA program helped me establish a
strong work ethic," said Jenna, who hails from Lourdes-de-Blanc-Sablon, Que. "It
pushed me to pay attention to detail, to see things from a logical standpoint and
to develop critical opinions on real life issues." She said the level of instruction at
Grenfell is by far its best asset – "The professors are very knowledgeable, agreeable,
helpful and dedicated. They set the bar high." And even though Jenna has
graduated, she still insists she can't get enough of the place. "If I’m not taking
classes here, I find work here. It’s a fun and fresh place to be. There is always a
new project, art exhibit, fundraiser, social, society or other activity to take part in."
EDUCATION
BACHELOR OF EDUCATION
(B.Ed.)
calling and reach your goal of becoming
a teacher more quickly by enrolling in the
Faculty of Education’s primary/elementary
education program, consecutive delivery option,
at Grenfell Campus. You can complete the program
in just four consecutive semesters, including a
teaching internship in the winter semester.
practices. You will gain an awareness and understanding of
child development while focusing on how to meet the needs
of diverse learners in the classroom.
Lindsi Hutchings, B.Ed.

Your coursework will give you an intensive, rich,
educational experience. Courses are complemented
with a winter semester internship where you will
teach children in the classroom. This intensive
educational experience will allow you to develop
your individual teaching style and recognize the
scope and complexity of a classroom teacher’s
roles and responsibilities under the guidance
of a co-operating teacher.
Students applying to the consecutive delivery option
must have completed a total of 78 credit hours (26
courses). There are specific courses necessary within
these 26 courses, including a required focus area.
Further details are outlined in the Memorial
University Calendar. Students are strongly
encouraged to meet with an academic adviser
to discuss appropriate course selection.
FIRST
HAND:
They’ve been there. Course instructors
are knowledgeable in their respective
discipline areas and most have K-12
teaching experience. There is also opportunity to
connect course content to school-based
experiences through 10 days of school
observation in the fall semester.
“The question was, what university would provide me with the skills
I needed to become the kind of teacher I wanted to be? After spending
three years completing pre-requisites at Grenfell I knew I’d made the right
decision.” Lindsi feels confident and prepared to contribute to the quality
of education and the overall quality of life of children in the school system.

ENGLISH
BACHELOR OF ARTS
(BA)
Our English faculty is made up of active,
distinguished scholars and creative writers.
Discuss atmosphere and characterization in
the classroom or take in a reading by a leading
international writer.
ENGLISH STUDENTS AT
GRENFELL WILL FIND THEIR
MINDS STIMULATED AND
THEIR HEARTS INSPIRED.
20
An English degree forms the foundation for a variety
of fields, preparing you for a career in journalism, writing,
public relations, public service, advertising, education or
tourism promotion. English is also a favoured first degree
if you’re considering a career such as law or medicine.
Todd Daniel Hennessey, Pinsent, BFA, BAMFA

Majoring in English helps you become a fluent
communicator and strong critical thinker; it exercises
your creative imagination and provides you with
practical skills in speaking, writing and research.
Beyond introductory first-year English courses, you
will focus on a three part literary survey, as well as
an exploration of English language development,
critical approaches to English literature and
individual projects.
You will also complete course work in a selected
area of concentration: modern literature, dramatic
literature, Canadian literature, or a combination
of these three areas.
WORDS
AND SONG:
English faculty and students
participate in the March Hare
literary festival, an annual event
during which emerging and internationally acclaimed
poets and writers tour Newfoundland and Labrador.
And the April Rabbit, Grenfell’s answer to the
March Hare, invites the writers of original poetry,
prose and music to take to the stage among
supportive friends and colleagues.
21
Daniel Pinsent says Grenfell’s English degree helped prepare him for his
studies at graduate school. Although at first he had some misgivings about
attending a smaller campus, he found out the opposite was true. “The third
and fourth years of my degree at Grenfell featured many classes that were
as intimate and challenging as graduate seminar classes,” says Daniel,
who is pursuing his PhD at Queen’s University. “The enthusiasm these
professors show for the material they teach and the people they educate
is infectious. I have been inspired to become an English professor and
I can only hope to have such a strong impact on future students as
Grenfell professors have had on me.”

ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE
BACHELOR OF SCIENCE
B.Sc. or B.Sc.(Hons.)
The mother of all field trips – our
environmental science program has opened
doors for students to study climate change in the
Arctic and marine environments in Australia – just to
name a couple. But if you prefer the comforts of
home... stay closer to Grenfell Campus and participate
in a field course at the Bonne Bay Marine Station in
Gros Morne National Park. Our campus is not far from
wetlands, boreal forest, the ocean, river systems and
sub-Arctic tundra.
22
ROLL UP YOUR SLEEVES AND
GET YOUR HANDS DIRTY.
The environment is your laboratory. Our faculty will
encourage you to get involved in the research they are
conducting – everything from the breakdown of pesticides
in the environment to the impact of the forest industry
on our region’s songbird population.
As a graduate of this program, you may be employed
as a science technologist or field scientist. Or continue
your studies in graduate school or a professional field
such as environmental law, business administration,
library science or medicine.
Jake Russell-Mercier, B.Sc.

Our program is interdisciplinary, combining aspects
of all the natural sciences. It includes a general or
honours option and provides a broad background
in many areas pertaining to the environment, such
as oceanography, soil and soil remediation,
environmental economics, energy and the
environment, global climate change and
conservation biology. We offer two concentrations
within this program: environmental biology
and environmental chemistry.
The environmental biology stream investigates how
human activities affect the relationships between
environmental factors and organisms in terrestrial and
freshwater habitats; seeking solutions to problems
caused by human impact.
The environmental chemistry stream focuses on the
chemical processes of life existence, and the fate
of anthropogenic contaminants in the environment.
Emphasis is on analytical chemistry which measures
the amount of anthropogenic contaminants in the
environment, while aquatic, atmospheric, and
industrial courses cover, among other aspects,
natural and artificial approaches to remediation.
23
REACHING
OUT:
Dr. Geoff Rayner Canham and his
multi-coloured coat won a huge
honour this year. His efforts to
spread the word about chemistry earned him a
prestigious award – the Natural Sciences and
Engineering Research Council of Canada’s
individual award for science promotion, including
a medal, certificate, and $10,000 prize.
www.grenfell.mun.ca/envs
Jake Russell-Mercier chose to pursue the environmental science (honours) biology
stream not only because of his interest in this field, but also because "it is
becoming a subject of increased importance on a global scale. This program will
serve me in the future as it provides me with a strong interdisciplinary theoretical
base along with some valued practical experience." Jake says he received
excellent instruction at Grenfell and feels his professors were genuinely interested
in his academic career. "I enjoyed and appreciated my Grenfell experience – my
profs were very approachable, knowledgeable and eager to assist me." Jake was
the 2010 winner of the University Medal for Academic Excellence in Environmental
Science and is now pursuing a master’s degree at the University of Ottawa.

ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES
BACHELOR OF ARTS
(BA)
From almost any vantage point on the Grenfell
campus you can see the sparkling Bay of Islands,
or the majestic Blow-Me-Down Mountains.
Where better to study the environment
than in a place as rich and lush as this?
WE ARE SURROUNDED
BY MOUNTAINS AND OCEAN
AND WE’RE NOT FAR FROM
NATURAL WONDERS AND
WORLD HERITAGE SITES.
24
At Grenfell we follow our own best practices. We promote
environmental excellence and foster an identity as an
environmentally friendly university. We are developing a
campus master plan that considers energy efficiency, water
use, the indoor environment and use of resources. The
best way to know environmental excellence is to live it.
Our environmental studies program can lead to a variety
of careers. You might work in environmental education,
park interpretation, journalism, law, or policy and planning.
You could find yourself conducting environmental impact
assessments, or taking it all in as you work in outdoor
recreation or adventure tourism.
Maria Makowska, BA

In the environmental studies program, you will
take courses covering topics such as resource
management, mapping, environmental economics,
ethics and policy. We offer two concentrations within
this program: environmental perspectives and
outdoor environmental pursuits.
Environmental perspectives will help you develop
a comprehensive understanding of environmental
issues.
Outdoor environmental pursuits explores the
hows and whys of various outdoor skills, such
as kayaking and skiing, in a way that respects
our valuable environmental resources.
EFFECTING
CHANGE:
The folks at Grenfell’s new
Environmental Policy Institute
want to get people talking
and thinking about our environment. They research
the questions that we are facing and encourage
debate on critical environmental policy issues with a
focus on climate change, energy and related issues.
25
www.grenfell.mun.ca/envstudy
Maria Makowska grew up in Coquitlam, BC, and fell in love with nature
at an early age during her family's summer camping trips. "I chose to
study at Grenfell because of the small class setting, which has allowed
me to make great connections with professionals in my field," she says.
Maria received the Gros Morne Internship in her final year of study,
which gave her "a great opportunity to put the skills I had learned
to the test and gave me hands-on experience on conducting my
own research."

GENERAL SCIENCE
BACHELOR OF SCIENCE
B.Sc. or B.Sc.(Hons.)
Remember high school science?
Eviscerating frogs, blowing up test tubes
and setting Bunsen burners ablaze?
Remember mathematics and physics?
Puzzling algorithms, and the hair-raising thrills
of electromagnetics?
BIOLOGY. CHEMISTRY.
EARTH SYSTEMS. MATHEMATICS.
PHYSICS. SO MANY CHOICES.
26
At Grenfell you can have it all.
The Conference Board of Canada 2010 found that
graduates with scientific degrees tend to earn more
and that mathematics and other sciences are widely
considered to be the underpinnings of modern
innovation capacity.
Upon completing this undergraduate degree you can
use it as a springboard into professions such as law,
dentistry, medicine, journalism or library science.
You will find your degree useful as a foundation
for a bachelor of education.
Jason Lanza, B.Sc.

The beauty of the general science degree is your
ability to learn about several different subject areas,
as opposed to focusing on just one. As a student in
the general science degree program, you will
complete a minimum of eight courses in three of
the following five disciplines: biology, chemistry,
earth systems, mathematics and physics. Any
combination will allow you to accumulate courses
in at least three teachable science areas. So rather
than the usual major and minor, you will, in essence,
be taking subjects in areas that are equivalent to a
triple minor.
A general or honours option is available.
THE NIGHT
SKY:
You’ll be able to see the stars
more clearly after a state-of-the-art
astronomical telescope is installed
in Grenfell’s new Arts and Science Academic
Extension. The telescope, which rings in at
almost half a million dollars, will have the
largest lens in Atlantic Canada.
27
www.grenfell.mun.ca/science
Grenfell's general science degree gave Jason Lanza the experience he
needed to become a science teacher. "I want to teach specifically the areas
of mathematics and physics," said Jason, who hails from Corozal Town,
Belize. "All the professors who taught me the sciences of mathematics,
physics, chemistry, earth science and environmental science have truly
stimulated my interest to pursue further studies at a graduate level. They
have challenged and guided me to discover my true potential and my true
interest in the fields of science. Because of them, I am even more eager to
become a teacher. I want to be like them.” Jason was the winner of the 2009
University Medal Academic Excellence in General Science.

HISTORICAL STUDIES
BACHELOR OF ARTS
(BA)
Historical studies is more than learning facts, dates
and lists of events. It’s an intriguing, challenging,
creative and inspiring form of intellectual and practical
exploration. At its essence, it helps everyone make
better sense of the moments, years and centuries
which have led to today’s world.
STUDYING THE PAST HELPS US
UNDERSTAND THE PRESENT,
AND PLAN FOR THE FUTURE.
28
To understand the past, you must begin by learning from
whence we came. You must understand what it was like
when European powers encountered native peoples, why
wars were fought over religion, trade and power, and what led
to key political and diplomatic decisions. History addresses the
differences which surround us, such as between countries like
Canada and the United States, places like Newfoundland and
Labrador. It also provides different ways of looking at
the past, the many viewpoints of history’s rulers, artists,
philosophers, scholars and just plain folk.
Our historical studies faculty bring to life the study
of Greek, Roman, Medieval, European, North
Atlantic, Newfoundland and Canadian history. Their
specializations and interests encompass art, national
and colonial history, military history, the history of ideas,
social/cultural history women’s history, gender history
and environmental history. What we teach also links
to related areas of historical studies, including literary
and theatre history, history of science, and social
and cultural studies.
Carolynne Gabriel, BA

Our historical studies program offers a flexible and
multi-disciplinary approach to history.
Choosing it as your major will help you develop the
ability to articulate the significance of political, social,
cultural, economic and military events. You may also
take a joint major or consider taking historical studies
as a minor.
At Grenfell we will help you develop the ability to
analyze and interpret past events, and to learn how
they shaped our world. Our faculty make every effort
to help students think critically and become
independent thinkers. The research, writing and
other skills you will learn can open doors to
professional careers in education, law, public service,
journalism, tourism, museum studies and politics,
communications and knowledge-based industries.
Our low student-professor ratios combine with quality
instruction to provide a more personalized teaching
approach. And our excellent library system provides
collections of documents and scholarly works to assist
and encourage students to learn about the past.
29
GOOD TO
KNOW:
Students interested in meeting
people with interests similar
to their own are invited to join
the Student History Society. As well, Grenfell’s
Historical Studies program offers several prestigious
awards to eligible students, including The Joanne
Swan Greenlee Prize in Historical Studies, The
Capt. Hugh Palliser Prize in History and the
Historical Studies Merit Award.
www.grenfell.mun.ca/histstd
Carolynne Gabriel believes Grenfell’s BA in historical studies ensures that
students have a well-rounded understanding and appreciation of history.
“A broader understanding of how history has unfurled, as well as the
instruction received on how to think critically, are important for understanding
the present and are applicable in one's own life,” says Carolynne, who hails
from Komoka, ON. “The instruction I’ve received at Grenfell is of the best
quality, not only because the professors are highly knowledgeable in their
areas of interest, but also because they are very supportive and always
willing to offer assistance and encouragement.”

HUMANITIES
BACHELOR OF ARTS
(BA)
The humanities program has as its central
goal the encouragement of constructive
citizenship. We want our students to have the
capacity to understand the political and cultural
worlds they inhabit, to appreciate the values of
freedom and equality, and to resist forces that
threaten these values. Our fundamental faith is
that education is the key to citizenship and human
flourishing, the fundamental bulwark against oppression.
FIGHT TYRANNY.
STUDY HUMANITIES.
30
Humanities students graduate with skills prized by
corporations and in sectors, such as information technology,
finance, natural resources, utilities, and manufacturing.
Humanists work in government at all levels, and in fields
such as medicine, law and journalism. Humanities students
have a wide outlook and the versatility required to adapt to
a rapidly shifting workplace. They are visionaries and
seekers who see beyond the commonplace and status
quo. They have skills in writing, analyzing and evaluating,
they have ethical insight and leadership potential.
Josh Fleming, BA

Imagine gaining skills in analysis and writing by
comparing Arcade Fire to Carl Jung. Or Watchmen
to Homer’s Illiad. And who knew there was a
connection between the Family Guy and philosophy?
In Humanities 1001, for instance, students will
engage the most interesting music, novels and film
in the contemporary world and discover their roots
in ages past. In this course time travel is not only
possible, it’s mandatory. And Humanities 1002
examines how books have changed the world,
from Marx and Shakespeare to Dante and Plato.
You’ll study six revolutionary texts from a variety
of disciplines.
The pedagogical focus is on core texts considered in
their historical, social, and political contexts. Cultural
literacy demands familiarity with the most influential
and most profound works in literature, philosophy,
art, science, music and religion.
HUMANITIES
IS HARD
CORE:
Fight! Challenge! Engage! The
students who run Grenfell’s
Humanities Society are all about
getting into a good debate.
What does it mean to fight oppression? How can
we make our world a better place? How can we
learn from the masters? Get in on a wide range of
activities: debates and discussions on critical topics
and entertaining guest speakers who will show
you why the humanities rock.
31
www.grenfell.mun.ca/humanities
Josh Fleming chose Grenfell's humanities program because it covers a
broad reach of subjects in which he is interested. "The humanities teach
you to think critically, which is essential in the workplace as well as
everyday life," said Josh. "The instruction I've received has been
superior; the beauty of the program is that you grow to know professors
from a variety of disciplines. Humanities courses allow you to develop
rhetoric while being educated on a broad range of topics - If you're
willing to learn, there is always an open door at Grenfell.”

NURSING
BACHELOR OF NURSING
(BN)
They are on the front line. These men and women
are responsible for your care. Few careers are more
rewarding, or more challenging.
WORKING AS A PART OF AN
INTERPROFESSIONAL HEALTH CARE
TEAM, NURSES DEAL WITH LIFE
AND DEATH SITUATIONS EVERY DAY.
32
As a nurse, you will be part of the largest group of health
care professionals in Canada. And you’ll be in demand
worldwide. Career opportunities extend outside traditional
hospital roles. You could work as a practitioner in remote and
rural areas, conduct research, monitor occupational health
risks or work in the community health field. Or you could find
yourself working as an administrator or educator. Either way,
you will be a critical part of the community you serve.
You will have many opportunities to gain first-hand knowledge
of what it takes to have a successful nursing career. The ability
to think critically, reflect personally and make informed
decisions based on ethics and evidence, as well as having
sound clinical judgment and technological competence are
all essential parts of making informed decisions as a nurse.
Western Regional School of Nursing offers low studentinstructor
ratios in classrooms and clinical settings. The
bachelor of nursing program is offered at three sites:
Western Regional School of Nursing in Corner Brook,
as well as the Centre for Nursing Studies and
Memorial University, both in St. John’s.
Anne Wadhwa, BN

To enrol in the nursing program at Western Regional
School of Nursing you must have completed high
school chemistry and biology in addition to meeting
the general university requirements. Enrolment in the
nursing program is limited and the selection process
is competitive. A supplementary nursing application
is required by March 1 in addition to the general
admissions application.
As for accommodations, you may choose from
Grenfell’s student housing, Monaghan Hall (adjacent
to the hospital), or off-campus in the Corner Brook
through Grenfell Campus. You will be a member of
the Grenfell Campus Student Union as well as the
Canadian Nursing Students Association.
TIME TO
HEAL:
For 40 years, Western Regional
School of Nursing has been
showing students how to help
others heal. Since the first graduating class of 34
nurses received pins and diplomas in 1971, more
than 1,825 nurses have graduated from the school.
To mark the occasion, efforts are underway to
establish an alumni association.
33
www.grenfell.mun.ca/nursing
Anne Wadhwa has fulfilled her passion for caring for others in two short years,
thanks to the fast-track BN program. She chose the program because she
wanted the knowledge, skills and opportunity to work close to home in an
exciting and rewarding career. “As well, I am interested in health research;
while in nursing school, I had the opportunity to work with nursing faculty
and staff on their research projects,” said Anne, a resident of Corner Brook.
“The nursing instructors integrate their practical experiences into their
classroom teaching which makes the classroom learning extremely
meaningful and interesting. They take a lot of pride in being a part of
the nursing profession and instill this sense of pride in their students.”

PSYCHOLOGY
BACHELOR OF ARTS
BA or BA(Hons.)
BACHELOR OF SCIENCE
B.Sc. or B.Sc.(Hons.)
To study the mind. To understand animal and human
behaviour. Are personality, abnormal behaviour and
intelligence affected by genetics or the environment?
Why do some people hate and others nurture? Can the
unconscious mind influence behaviour?
PSYCHOLOGY FOCUSES
ON ALL ASPECTS OF
THE HUMAN EXPERIENCE.
34
Studying psychology at Grenfell will give you skills and
knowledge with lifelong relevance, particularly in the
workplace: critical thinking, problem-solving and
analytical abilities, effective writing and speaking skills.
Whether you pursue a bachelor of arts or science, your
degree in psychology can lead to a variety of careers,
such as lab instructor, police officer, employment training
counsellor, group home director, social worker, speech
therapist or physician.
Grenfell’s psychology programs also provide excellent
preparation for graduate studies at the master’s and PhD
levels in experimental, clinical and applied psychology.
Rebekah Robbins, BA(Hons.), MPH

Our first-year course will introduce you to modern
psychology. Second- and third-year courses focus on
the structure and function of the brain, animal
behaviour, the mysteries of abnormal personalities,
group pressures, and lost and recovered memories.
In the fourth year, you will participate in a weekly
seminar discussing current issues in academic and
professional psychology, and complete an
independent research project.
You can take the psychology specialization as either
an honours or general BA or B.Sc. If you plan to
attend graduate or professional school, you might
consider the honours option. As an honours student,
you will take an increased number of psychology
courses in your second and third years, as well as a
two-semester empirical research project (a thesis)
in your fourth year. If you opt to take the general
psychology program, you will complete a
one-semester independent research project.
GOOD TO
KNOW:
Nestled in the back of the
psychology lab are Pat-Rick,
Hubert, Constantine and their
friends. No, they’re not students, they’re
domesticated black-and-white rats that Dr. Sandra
Wright and her students have been studying. “The
research investigates the spatial cognitive abilities of
rodents,” says Dr. Wright, adding this basically means
how rats learn and remember where they are in their
environment and where important places are, such as
food and shelter. These happy little guys spend
their days lounging, wandering mazes and,
for a treat, feasting on fruity cereal.
35
www.grenfell.mun.ca/psych
Rebekah Robbins of Corner Brook says her studies in Grenfell's psychology
program provided her the skills she needed to become a web-based
outreach co-ordinator for youth, as well as to pursue her Master's of public
health. "From the beginning of my psychology degree I was enveloped
into the Grenfell community," she says. "The research I was encouraged to
conduct prepared me for a field where it is imperative to be inquisitive and
critically-minded. I am inspired by the dedication of the faculty and staff at
Grenfell to the betterment and well-being of students."

SOCIAL/CULTURAL STUDIES
BACHELOR OF ARTS
(BA)
You and your classmates might come from a
variety of backgrounds, but you all have one
thing in common: an innate curiosity and
THE DESIRE TO FIND OUT WHY
PEOPLE DO THE THINGS THEY DO.
36
The social/cultural studies program examines the practices
and meanings of everyday life from social, cultural and
historical perspectives. It questions why we wake the dead,
have differing notions of the perfect family, allow the mass
media to influence us, choose a particular form of medical
care or feel bound to the place where we were born.
Some say our culture – the knowledge and skills we
learned as we grew up – shapes us. Others argue that
society – our community and the media – influences us.
The program allows you to examine the interplay of society,
culture and history from three complementary perspectives:
anthropology, folklore and sociology. These areas share an
emphasis on the concept of culture and rely on the
ethnographic method – an approach that helps you understand
the world from the perspective of the people you are studying.
The social/cultural studies degree will prepare you for work in
social research, governmental and non-governmental
organizations, social policy and community/rural development,
immigration, public relations, journalism, cultural heritage
preservation and promotion, and the expanding cultural
tourism sector. It also provides a valuable background for
careers in business, human resources, policing, law, medical
care and social work.
Candice Pike, BA

As an interdisciplinary program, social/cultural studies
will allow you to use various lenses in studying human
behaviour: the sociological imagination lens, the
comparative cross-cultural lens and the informal
folkloric communication lens, among others.
In keeping with the tradition of cultural studies,
social/cultural studies at Grenfell is not taught as
a unified theory but as a diverse field of study
encompassing many different approaches, methods
and academic perspectives. It upholds scholarly
discourse that draws on theory and methods from
these various perspectives while investigating the
relations between specific cultural practices and
cultural objects under conditions limited by power
and defined by contestation, modification and
struggle.
Our faculty bring to scholarly discourse a wide range
of research interests. Faculty research interests
include rural development dynamics, the modern
funeral services industry, non-verbal communication,
medicine, Aboriginal identity and socio-economic
issues, belief systems, identity construction in
women’s narrative and the interrelationship of
power/knowledge, and western social and cultural
institutions.
37
When Candice Pike enrolled in Introduction to Sociology, something clicked.
Inspired by her professors, the social/cultural studies graduate began a journey
that helped her better understand how people connect to each other and how
this could help her contribute to the world. "I've always been interested in social
dynamics," said Candice. "I like to observe how people interact socially as
opposed to psychologically." Upon graduating she received a $14,000
assistantship and a SSHRC scholarship to do a master's in dance at York
University. She attributes her success to Grenfell's social/cultural studies
program. "This well-rounded degree taught me invaluable research,
communication, and critical thinking skills that have opened many doors for me."
GOOD TO
KNOW:
Dr. Ivan Emke’s small-town roots
are making big-time waves. The
associate vice-principal (research) is
part of a national research team that's investigating
“The New Rural Economy.” Along with his team,
Dr. Emke looks at how rural communities are
adapting to the challenges of a changing economy.
“People talk about needing to compete globally,
without really understanding the implications of
that,” he says. “All over the world, traditions are
being trampled in the name of global competition.”
SUSTAINABLE
RESOURCE MANAGEMENT
BACHELOR OF RESOURCE
MANAGEMENT
(BRM)
Water, forests, oil and gas: are we using our planet’s
resources responsibly? How can we better manage
these precious renewable and non-renewable
resources, which, more often than not, we are guilty
of taking for granted? Grenfell’s bachelor of resource
management in sustainable resource management will
equip you to become a leader in this developing field.
THROUGH YOUR STUDIES YOU
WILL MELD ENVIRONMENTAL THEORY
WITH EMERGING TECHNOLOGIES.
38
As a graduate, you will be prepared for a wide variety of
careers including resource management in the public service
or private industry, environmental policy development,
ecological restoration and domestic and international
governmental and non-governmental organizations. Or, if
you wish to continue on with advanced studies in related fields,
you might like to investigate disciplines such as geography,
marine studies, environmental planning, oil and gas studies,
or environmental law.
Erica Noseworthy, BRM

For the bachelor of resource management degree,
you will be required to complete 120 credit hours,
including courses in disciplines such as biology,
chemistry, economics, environmental studies,
geography and statistics. Sustainable resource
management courses focus on areas such as marine
and terrestrial environments, industry-specific
approaches, environmental planning and
management, biodiversity, remote sensing and image
interpretation, environmental law and renewable and
non-renewable energy resources.
A fourth-year research seminar will allow you to focus
specifically on select resource management topics.
The seminars are presented on current research and
environmental issues by faculty, students and guest
lecturers from universities, government and industry.
An independent research project will require you
to carry out an approved project on a topic in
sustainable resource management. You will be
expected to prepare a major paper under the
supervision of a faculty member, including a systematic
literature review and independent research. This
approach has been lauded as excellent preparation
for master’s- and PhD-level research.
39
RIVER
RESEARCH:
The Humber River Basin Project
(HRBP) is one of the largest
research initiatives ongoing at
Grenfell. HRBP is a collection of many research
projects that focus on the Humber River basin. It is a
comprehensive, integrated approach to ecological
assessment and long-term monitoring. The basin is an
important asset of western Newfoundland and serves
as a platform from which to develop knowledge and
generate models for addressing critical issues
surrounding resource management and sustainability.
Erica Noseworthy chose Grenfell’s sustainable resource management program
because she wanted to learn more about observing, respecting and managing
the earth and its resources. “The instruction I’ve received was incredible,” said
Erica, who hails from Corner Brook. “My professors greatly enhanced my ability
to apply resource management techniques to everyday life.” She added that
Grenfell’s small class sizes allow students to get to know their professors and
to pursue courses that are active and engaging. “Thanks to Grenfell’s
proactive faculty and its bachelor of resource management degree, I
have had opportunities to work in the field, observing resource-based
industries in the Corner Brook area.”
THEATRE
BACHELOR OF FINE ARTS
(BFA)
Work behind the scenes with our costume
designers or on the stage in one of the many
productions that take place each fall and winter
semester.
UNDER THE SPOTLIGHTS YOU
BECOME A PASSIONATE ACTOR
COAXING A RANGE OF EMOTIONS
FROM YOUR AUDIENCE – AND
YOU LEAVE THEM WANTING MORE.
40
Or perhaps you are more excited about working behind
the scenes as part of the team bringing a theatrical
performance to life.
Our graduates have leading roles in Gemini-nominated
television shows, perform at the Shaw and Stratford
festivals and with professional Newfoundland theatre
companies such as Rising Tide and Theatre Newfoundland
Labrador. They also build props on Walt Disney cruise ships,
work backstage in London’s West End and pursue successful
careers such as teachers, entrepreneurs and lawyers.
Rick Simm, BFA

As a theatre student you will choose either acting or
stagecraft. If acting is your choice, you’ll explore the
many techniques of performance and take to the
stage under the guidance of our experienced faculty.
If you would rather work “behind the scenes”, the
stagecraft specialization will teach you the specific
skills of carpentry, props and wardrobe, stage
management and more. All your hard work will
culminate in a full-scale production.
Your home away from home will be the Fine Arts
Building, where you will perfect your craft in a 200-
seat theatre – a laboratory for actors, technicians,
designers, directors and audiences. When you reach
your fourth year, you will spend part of a semester
studying, training and working on a production at
Memorial University’s campus in Harlow, England.
ADMISSION
AUDITION:
Enrolment in the theatre
program is limited and the
selection is competitive. Submit
your theatre application by March 31, in addition
to your general university admissions application.
Depending on the specialization you choose,
you will be required to either audition (acting)
or attend an interview (stagecraft).
41
Rick Simm credits his successes across Canada and into the United States
to the instruction he received from Grenfell's bachelor of fine arts in theatre.
"I learned from working professionals," said the 2006 graduate. "Our
production classes operated like a professional theatre, and when I
graduated, I felt more than equipped to compete for employment with
actors across Canada. I'd recommend this program to anyone." For the
past two years Rick has toured Atlantic Canada and Ontario twice, and
has embarked on a stage production headed for L.A. Titled "CSI Live,"
the stage play will feature Rick in the lead male role.

TOURISM STUDIES
BACHELOR OF ARTS
(BA)
The bachelor of arts in tourism studies provides
students with the opportunity to learn the principles
of tourism management, to understand the issues
surrounding tourism locally, nationally and globally,
and to develop as a leader in the tourism industry.
YOU WILL BE WELL-POSITIONED
TO TAKE ON LEADERSHIP ROLES
AND INITIATE NEW ENTERPRISES
WITHIN THE TOURISM SECTOR.
42
Tourism management principles and the related areas
of business, economics and cultural heritage will be taught
in a small-classroom setting. But the very nature of the
tourism industry dictates that students gain experience outside
the classroom; students will collaborate with peers, instructors
and professionals in the field to see first-hand what the tourism
industry is all about – the challenges and successes that
tourism practitioners and operators face every day.
We also offer an advanced diploma in tourism studies
for people who may have completed other training
or may already be working in the tourism field.
Lexie Parsons, BA

Our tourism studies program includes courses
devoted to the academic study of tourism,
supplemented by courses in business and
economics. You will have the opportunity to
interact with tourism practitioners and to
understand the challenges and issues they face.
You will investigate tourism development issues
relating to resource sensitivity and cultural integrity.
You will explore environmental impacts within a
social, cultural, economic and political context.
The skills you acquire through this program will
be transferable beyond provincial borders, and
will provide you with strengths in both creative and
analytical thinking and putting that theory into action
– requirements for leadership in the tourism industry.
TOURISM
TRENDS:
Worldwide, tourism employs
more people than any other
single industrial sector. It is
Canada’s fourth-ranked export industry. Our
tourism studies program allows students and
faculty to engage in emerging and internationally
acclaimed tourism initiatives on the province’s west
coast, such as the Bonne Bay Marine Station,
Gros Morne Theatre Festival and the L’Anse aux
Meadows and Red Bay Historic Sites of Canada.
43
www.grenfell.mun.ca/tourism
Lexie Parsons should know a thing or two about the province’s natural
beauty – the tourism studies student grew up in Norris Point, surrounded by
Gros Morne National Park. But it wasn’t until she began the tourism studies
program that she began to realize exactly how big a role Newfoundland and
Labrador’s attractions really play. “Grenfell’s tourism studies program has
given me a global perspective on the environment I grew up in and took
for granted,” she says. “I have become more aware of its importance to
our society both environmentally and economically.”

VISUAL ARTS
BACHELOR OF FINE ARTS
(BFA)
Do you see yourself contributing to your culture
by making images? Creating multidimensional
objects, spaces and soundscapes? Or writing and
thinking about the things you see around you? Your
artistic talents and our four-year visual arts program
could be a perfect match.
YOU HAVE THE DRIVE
TO EXPRESS YOURSELF
THROUGH IMAGES AND OBJECTS
AND THEIR HISTORY.
44
Our Fine Arts Building is where hundreds of students have
honed the skills required to become artists and art historians
in their own right; some work in national art galleries or as
architects, designers and art conservationists. Our faculty
members are active professional artists and art historians
making significant contributions to visual culture across
Canada and throughout the world. They are worthy
mentors for eager minds. They will challenge you and give
you the skills you need to meet these challenges confidently.
Gabrielle Hughes, BFA

In your first year of the visual arts program you will be
introduced to basic concepts of studio art practices, art
history and visual culture. Both in the studio and in the
classroom you will be encouraged to develop a rigorous
approach to producing work and developing your ideas.
In the second and third years, we offer a comprehensive
range of studio courses as well as art history and
academic electives. Regular critiques and discussions will
help you develop the skills you will need to explore and
present the world as you envision it. In your fourth year
you will have the opportunity to work on your own with
the goal of developing an independent body of work.
One-on-one discussions of your work with your faculty
adviser, auxiliary advisers and visiting artists will be
integral parts of this process.
You will even have the chance to study at Memorial
University’s campus in Harlow, England. Our vibrant
Visiting Artists Program will allow you to shape your
work with professionals from all over as well as to make
important contacts that will help you build your career.
Although formal training is not a requirement, you
will be required to submit a portfolio of your work.
Enrolment is limited and the selection is very
competitive. You should submit your visual arts
application by March 1, in addition to your
general university admissions application.
A 2011 Rhodes Scholar, Gabrielle Hughes of Corner Brook has lots to look
forward to. And she attributes much of her academic success to the time she
spent at Grenfell. ”The VA program is incredibly friendly, motivating and
challenging,” she said, adding that her current research interests lie in the field
of art history. ”The instructors are extremely knowledgeable and genuinely
concerned about the work of the students and the progress they are making.
My education at Grenfell has equipped me with a skill set that will be invaluable
at Oxford.”

from Sydney, NS, to Port aux
Basques, NL, crosses the
Gulf of St. Lawrence regularly.
If you live outside Canada, you
will clear customs in cities such
as Toronto, Montreal, Halifax or
St. John’s, then catch a connecting
domestic flight to Deer Lake airport.
You should be aware of customs
regulations.
COME SEE
FOR YOURSELF!
Visit our campus! Our staff will
arrange tours, meetings with
faculty and even a chance to sit
in on an actual university class.
