Vertical flows (recharge or discharge) to the IAS <strong>and</strong> UFA are dependent upon the<br />

thickness <strong>and</strong> integrity of the overlying confining units, the permeability of the<br />

confining unit sediments, <strong>and</strong> the water level or head difference between aquifers.<br />

When water levels in the surficial aquifer are higher than levels in the underlying<br />

aquifer, water moves downward to recharge the UFA/IAS. Conversely, when water<br />

levels in the surficial aquifer are lower, water moves upward, or is discharged from<br />

the UFA or IAS to the surficial aquifer.<br />

Hydraulic head differences between the UFA <strong>and</strong> surficial aquifer are highly variable,<br />

especially in the BKT, ranging from 2 feet to 90 feet in areas north of the river<br />

(Figure 2-6). This variability illustrates the highly karst nature of the BKT with low<br />
