2.4.3 Summary Significant improvements in water quality have occurred during the past 20 to 25 years in the Alafia River. Most improvement is attributable to the reduction or elimination of phosphate mining/processing related discharges. Increasing trends in potassium (potentially related to fertilization) and nitrate have been observed. Although recent nitrite+nitrate nitrogen concentrations are substantially less than they have been in the past, concentrations are still elevated above what is believed to be natural. 2-77
